    I have a quick Trick for situations like this. I never get stuck anymore. I bought 6 links of Chain at Home Depot Cut to fit threw the Rims and around the Tire and use a heavy duty Quick connect from Home Depot also. You can buy them right next to the Chain section. All I usually need is 2 of these chains put on the drive axle and I’m rollin. It’s very quick to run them threw the rim and use the quick connect and your done. I would not go down the road with them though because they are not DOT certified. But when your stuck at a customer or a truck stop or rest area they will save your ass. Once you get rolling stop in a good spot and take them off. I have 6 pieces but never need that many.

      The dolly brakes is simply a little lever on either the dash or the steering column (depends on truck) that you pull down to only apply brakes to the trailer brakes. The only times I use them is when I’m locking in my tandems (trailer axles) after sliding them forward or backwards.

    As a non-truck driver, I'm pretty surprised that a major truck stop like that didn't put forth more of an effort at snow removal. My family used to be a fast food franchisee, and if we had multiple people stuck in our lots for hours due to heavy snow, I'd have been on the phone to our plow contractor non-stop.

    I was originally going to stay at that rest stop Sunday night then head to my pickup Monday morning. Im glad i didn't. I stopped at the pa welcome center instead. Im also glad the first big purchase i made as a driver was to buy my own set of tire chains. You'd be amazed how many carriers operate in the northeast and dont have snow chains because they think that its not Colorado so why do we need them. In dec i put on brand new snow tires on my drives and steers because I already know, winter hits the northeast hard in jan and feb so i have to be ready to drive in some shitty weather. And Monday morning i crawled out of my parking spot with 2 ft of snow, got to my pickup 8 mins away , got loaded, and headed to mass. Its amazing what good tires will do for you.

    To the new drivers out there...NEVER set your trailer brakes in these types of conditions. They will likely freeze on you and getting them freed up is a major pain in the ass. That's possibly what happened to the guy across from the videographer. It's also possible the brakes on your drive wheels will freeze, but it is much easier to get them free.

      You’re absolutely right. Something to add too, and keep in mind, if you shut the truck off, many trucks have a VERY minor bleeding of the air, just not so much so it’s noticeable when running or even off for a short period, but in the cold that air will bleed off faster and even if you don’t physically set the trailer brakes, once that air gets low enough, they’ll set em anyway. One of the benefits to idling if you can. Otherwise you might wake up after using only your bunk heater for warmth, to find frozen trailer brakes that you didn’t even intentionally set.

    in BC Canada Most highways require you to carry chains from October 1st to April 30th. CVSE will check for them if they pull you over and if you spin out and don't have them they get a little testy. I drove a plow truck for about five years and I have lost count of the number of times I have given truck drivers lessons on how to put on chains. My favourite was the guy trying to jack up his rear axle to get them on.
    The time I did on the highway with super B's and logging I learned how nice full lockers are.
    You have the right idea though sit back relax and wait till it's cleared up.

But, we were snowed in at a truck stop in Buffalo for 5 or 6 days. We stopped at the truck stop for the night. Had some snow. Woke up in the morning snow was up to bottom of the doors🙄safe travel to ya.

    I think sometimes trucks have to be upgraded to carry certain items like tire chains, air compressor, winch’s, and anything to deal with the weather.

    • @StanleySchmengie
      @StanleySchmengie Před 2 lety

      The only time you are going to see a winch on the front bumper of a tractor trailer is if it does a lot of offroad operations, like oil field work for instance. Many companies and operators carry tire chains in the winter, and most of the western mountain states require them to be carried in the winter months or the driver/company can be fined, even if it is sunny and the roads are clean and dry.

    • @survivetothrive21
      @survivetothrive21  Před 2 lety

      Typically you just run through a truck wash if it’s bad enough. But some places have actual scrapers exactly as tall as the trailer you drive under, and they’ll clean it off.
