  • @paulhancock
    @paulhancock Před 20 dny +2

    I think the most 'dominant' EPL team ever is the correct word, no doubt, but this era of football is terrible... And context matters when comparing 'greatness'.
    The standards, players and managers in the game across Europe are awful compared to 15, 20, 30 years ago, and City's only competition is an inexperienced Arsenal manager and team full of kids who've never won anything, and the playing field is not level, so what does greatness in this era even mean?
    We'll never know how they'd do in peak Ferguson/Wenger/Mourinho eras but I know they wouldn't be getting 100 points or winning a league in third gear like they do now. The level of players throughout the PL in 90's and 2000's compared to now is scary... It's actually embarrassing.
    Liverpool and Arsenal are 'the' competition in this era... But compare Arteta's players vs Wenger? Klopp's players vs Benitez? Different levels.
    Unfortunately, due to the nature of the internet, most people contributing to the discussion didn't even watch football pre-Messi, so it's usually pure recency bias and statistics.
    Anyway, whatever.

    • @senti2175
      @senti2175 Před 20 dny +4

      Fergi had far less competition when he was winning than Pep. It was basically a farmers league with all the financial power in one club.
      The fact that Wenger even challenged him and won says all because Arsenal were never the best in Europe (Klop's Liverpool were).
      The first real challenge came with Mourinho and he exposed him.
      And the fact that a new team with no experience in winning titles like City beat him further exposed him.
      Further proof that you logic is BS is that two of PL teams won UCL before City beating everyone else in Europe. There have been two finals with all English teams. Since Pep came in, there has been an English team in UCL final almost every year.
      And more clubs have financial power than ever before.
      Wenger was kicked out of the club by own fans because he couldn't compete with new increased competition. He considered getting top 4 a success.
      Morinho failed in Man Utd then failed at Spurs in Pep's era.
      So all this nostalgia talk kinda falls apart.
