That's interesting about the explanation for the nature of Gizmo in the novelization, I've know of that for a couple of years now. However, as a kid my reasoning was always that the water that got spilled on Gizmo was "dirty", it was used to clean paintbrushes, then in the second film, again the water landed on the painting and traveled down before it hit Gizmo. I assumed Gizmo himself must have originated from a drop of pure clean water and that accounted for his innocent personality.
Drawkcabi that’s a very good point. But what about the water used on the mogwai in the science lab? That one was cheeky and naughty as well
I always assumed that Gizmo got somehow created by a never-revealed direct breed method. But it also could be as simple as: humans only keeping alive the ones with the best and "more desirable" traits, which is essentially what we have done with dogs, vegetables, etc.
I love how when the Gremlins go after Mrs. Deagle, she's like "They've come for me!" and "I'm not ready yet." It's the whole 'The devil has sent his minions to come for me for my wicked ways' scenario. Well of course, little does she know, she's going to meet Satan in a few seconds.

A little trivia:
Early in the film,following Billy to work,there is a cinema billboard showing the films A BOYS LIFE and WATCH THE SKIES. These were the working-titles for the Spielberg-films ET and CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF THE THIRD KIND.
We have the smokeless ashtrays. They belongs to my house. My father.
Don‘t miss Jerry Goldsmith in the phone booth and the smiley sticker on the fridge door (The Howling) and the the glowing finger (E.T.) and…. So many refereces to other movies. It‘s so much fun every time I watch this movie.
Will you review Gremlins 2? I find that movie to be extremely under-rated.
Gremlins 2 is an amazing sequel
I agree I prefer it to the first one in my opinion
"Explorers" and "Small Soldiers" don't get enough love. Plus, for one shot, you can see the puppeteer wires on the gremlin throwing dishes at Mrs. Peltzer.
For those asking why Gizmo is "good " while his offspring are "bad", my theory is that Gizmo is the pure progenitor and the offspring are the corrupted copies.
Also, mogwai is the Chinese word for "demon". Make of that what you will...😜
I use to have a life size Gizmo in the 80s as a kid.

My favorite Christmas movie had been Gremlins since 1984. Since 2015 it has moved to number 2 after viewing Krumpus.
Krampus is kind of a spiritual sequel to Gremlins.

The neighbors story of Gremlins during ww2 is actually true. Fighter pilots reported such incidents of little mischievous being ripping up wings.

Actually the 'Gremlins'were mechanical malfunctions but Roald dahl did a story called Gremlins based on monsters in the machines of the plane.

if you cut out the part where the gremlinis inside the snow then that fact for this movie is more acceptable for me.
When it says "Don't feed it after midnight," I'm assuming it just means after midnight until sunrise.

I always assumed that it was linked to their own biological day-night cycle. But it probably was just a mystical reasoning: past midnight is where supernatural/bad things come up.

Wasn't it Rick Baker who created Gizmo and the gremlins? Interesting, considering him and Rob Bottin(from The Howling) both designed iconic werewolves.
Baker did the Gremlins for the sequel, it was Chris Walas for the first.

@@GamerGuysReviews Thanks for the correction! I remember seeing a photo of Baker and one of the creatures and I was shocked for a sec. All three guys(Baker, Bottin, and Walas) were excellent at their craft.
I need to watch this again. Don't think I've seen it since '85 or so..

I think there needs to be a gremlins 3(at least before the inevitable remake). I was just thinking that a new plot device could be to "tremors" it, meaning add a new part to their life cycle. either get into to gizmo/gremlin origins or something that could happen after the gremlin stage. dosnt matter just would love to see another gremlins film with practical effect.
Have you ever noticed that Mrs. Deagle's Real Estate business is only open for 45 minutes a day?! From 10.30am to 11.15am. She's even a tyrant with time! 😄

My dad was a bit of a lad back in the day and managed to get his hands on many vids before they were legally available.
He handed me a non marked VHS tape with a wink, saying it was a pirate video.
I popped the movie in and was totally swept away by the nasty little green bastards.
Dad asked me what I thought of the movie, I thought it was great, but it had no pirates in it.

Only a few men of culture know that Gremlins inspired Resident Evil 2.
Pretty sure the news (at the end) report only 1 death: Ms Deagle. Which really does not reflect the viscious portray of the Gremlin's attack at the town, but sort of explains why the event didn't gain global notoriety. Either way, that means that the professor just got drugged. And even if it's not your favorite, please do review the 2nd part.

I have to say part of me wants a new Gremlins movie because I loved the originals. I dont want a re-make, it will never top the original. If they could make a movie thats good and just a new movie that stands on its own I'd be happy.
