      ​@@snargemccoy8813 electric bass and upright bass have the same tuning. they are both transposition instruments because they both tune an octave below concert C. there is no tonal difference between the two.

      ​@@guymanmen7556that Snargemccoy deleted his comments. I would have said "bass" refers to the range of notes. Upright bass is also called "bass violin" because it's a violin that plays in the bass range of notes. Bass Guitar is a guitar that plays in the bass range, bass tuba, same range.

    As someone who’s first instrument was an upright bass, it takes it mad difficult learn guitar because the notes are different and you only look at the bass clef when learning bass. It does make it easier to learn electric bass guitar though.

      ​@@Pouhpe Iirc it used to be tuned in fifths, but it created too much of a gap between each string (i.e. you had to shift just to play G scale), so it changed over time. There are also 5-string basses with a low C, although some versions have a low B.

      Sure but cello is generally tuned to fifths like a violin or viola- instead of fourths like bass or the lower strings of a guitar.
      It’s super confusing to try to go from a familiarity with guitar to bass vs bass/guitar to cello. Just sayin’

    Upright bass is a octave lower than bass guitar (it's a octave down from what it's written at)

      Uh not really ,the tuning is the same E1 A1 D2 G2 for both upright bass and bass guitar, you are probably talking about the octobass Which A MONSTRUOUSLY BIG instrument ,it a double bass but even bigger and lower

    It's a real shame I can't find a cheap one (under 300 euros) because I'd LOVE to have one in my own studio to play on some jazzy songs I've written.
    Also, the fact that it has a fretless fingerboard makes it a perfect instrument to strengthen any musician's ear.
    The intonation of the notes is all down to the player's touch and I love this challenging aspect about it!

      Because it's gigantic and few people want to play them whereas everybody has got a guitar. That's the law of offer and demand, no economy of scale.

      It's probably way more expensive to build as an instrument compared to a guitar (much to my sadness lol), hence the corresponding price tag.

      youre not finding any upright bass for under 800euro ☠️ and 800euro are the worst basses. if you do find a 300euro bass, then either its a toy, or its super broken

      also fun fact, you can play a bass tuned in 5ths too, it's how i prefer it, since i can read bass clef on a cello (also 5ths), but not a bass guitar (4ths)

    Put some scotch tape along the side of the neck/ fretboard where you can see it. Use a tuner and sharpie to mark where the notes are on the low E string. Lets you know places to start for the fingerings to keep things mostly in tune. The rest is your ear and knowing your fretboard for notes on the other strings. You can at least imagine where the frets/notes would be. :)

      Playing regular electric bass is like bowling with the guard rails up with your dominant hand.
      Switching to upright is like bowling with the guard rails down and using your opposite hand.

      Doublebass strings are different gauge, are flatwound or gut. And electric strings cant be installed at all. And dbass strings never snap

      Yes, that is how it is usually played.

      Yes. They’re built to be used with bows, that’s why the two middle strings protrude more than the two edge strings.

      ​@@buffkangaroodog That's... what "usually" means. It's _generally_ played using the bow. Doesn't mean it's _always_ arco, but it _generally_ is. It's generally arco in all genres of classical _and_ concert band music. Of course, if you _only_ play jazz, "usually" will mean something else.

      @@doriangrayest Double bass came after the cello, violin, etc. It is the descendant of the viola da gamba but the child of the cello. It started out with non-standard tuning typically an octave under the cello but changed to fourths on the E after that. That's why there's a 5-string version to compensate for that.
