    The Joyo is one of my favorite overdrive. I had the Maxon OD808 and had the Joyo, but I ended up selling my Maxon and keeping the Joyo. My speakers are slightly darker than V30s, so the Joyo works great with my setup.

    I personally loved that noisy sound coming from the Triple XXX with the vintage out front hahaha. Sounded insane. Would fit for a chaotic metallic hc sound for sure!

  • @needsLITHIUM
    @needsLITHIUM Před 2 lety +8

    In my experience, the Joyo, DemonFx, and Behringer OD pedals have the same exact chip as the Ibanez and Maxon units they're copying, but the QC variance in these cheap pedals is pretty high in comparison. You can buy 5 of the exact same pedal and they will all sound noticeably different, as well as have vastly different values in the same positions on the potentiometer controls. If you get a good one, it's a damn good one, so hang onto it; if you get a shitty one, return it and try again from the same or another retailer. Technically the same issue exists in the original pedals, too, but the variance isn't anywhere as pronounced or extreme as the cheaper ones, so as is probably obvious, YMMV.

    • @sisajtegabre
      @sisajtegabre Před 2 lety +1

      DemonFx is sick good and there are few others which are better then boutique blah blah brands, some so called copies of demon are way better then originals in terms of qulity manufacturing and i saw some extra add ons like dust proof pots, switches etc. No need to spent more 50$ max 70$ on 1st class pedal no matter what sort of pats they use, but brands are greedy they wish to earn millions fast and then they lie a lot, use hypes, pay even people to write in superlative on forums.

    • @needsLITHIUM
      @needsLITHIUM Před 2 lety +1

      @@sisajtegabre I have their Precision Drive clone. It's great. I might wanna get a Freedman BE-ODX for a possible layering sound. My gf plays bass, and I showed her their dark glass clones and she's interested, to say the least. Brands like Donner Deal and Valeton have some cool stuff, too, especially when it comes to Fly-Rig type pedals and some... Non-standard takes on older pedal trends.

    The Joyo has more gain at the lowest setting than the ts-9. A simple change of 1 resistor or soldering a resistor in parallel on the back of the board makes it sound more clear. I made that small mod and it is now more clear at the lowest gain setting.

    • @rockandrollmd541
      @rockandrollmd541 Před 2 lety

      @@JeffB-hf9rbThere is a 51K resistor that controls the minimum gain. It is just below the gain pot at the edge of the circuit board. I just soldered 56K resistor (green blue orange gold) in parallel to the back, which reduced the value to about 27K. If you don't want to take the pedal apart, you'll need a multimeter to find and measure the resistor. It cleans up nicely and is suitable as a boost pedal.

    I have to admit that I'm pretty late to the overdrive game. I grew up in a small town in TX and I didn't know anyone who used OD pedals. I remember one guy showing up with an old plastic Ibanez "Soundtank" TS5 and talking about how awesome they were. I thought it was a distortion pedal... I plugged it in, thought it sounded like crap (because I had NO IDEA how to use it) and never tried an OD again until a couple of years ago. Everyone I played with always just got the best tones they could from their amps and we all just thought that was how it was done. It wasn't until CZcams came around that I understood how to use them. And yes, I'm old...
    Anyway, awesome video! Thanks for helping people understand what all this gear does!

    I had started my overdrive pedal search a few months back , I had bought the joyo initially and was satisfied but had some nagging voice in my head saying well maybe a more expensive one might make it sound even better , I bought the walrus ages everyone raves about for 200$ and tbh the difference was subtle to me at best , if anything just seemed to add a bit more noise , but the positives aspects of it , I was getting with my 50$ joyo pedal , so yes I returned my walrus and saved 200$

    • @JohnWiku
      @JohnWiku Před 2 lety +1

      Same here, and for a different flavor of boost I added a TC Spark Booster in line with the Joyo. The Spark in the mid switch position does a very convincing TS boost and I switch between them pending on the guitar.

  • @1thess523
    @1thess523 Před 2 lety

    I bought the Joyo when I first started getting into overdrive pedals and it did nothing for my amp that I remember, I was a playing a JCM 2000 TSL 60 and didn't hear any improvement so I returned it, I borrowed my son's Walrus Audio Voyager and that pedal tightened up that amp nicely. I now have a JCM 2000 DSL 100 and JCM 900 and I run both with a Berhinger 0800 Vintage Overdrive (808 clone) and a Friedman Buxom Boost, each pedal makes the amps sound nicer one their own but together they jump it up a level. I also know what you mean about finding pedal demos for the style of music you play because I play skate and pop punk and everyone only does leads which I can't do 🤣. That is why you have become my new favorite amp and pedal demo guy 👍

Or maybe not put together the rig but make a list of gear and give advice how to find deals and what to avoid etc. I know you've showcased a lot of good cheap gear but condensing it down into one short video I'm sure would help a lot of players trying to find a place to start out with their first real rig and not just a little combo

    i like the joyo with the JCM 2000. And it really pulls the dual rec through the quicksand marsh bog of sadness, and i feel it correct and complete it's tone. And finally the joyo on the peavey triple XXX is soo gnarly it wins hands down. i think it could be used on real thrash with pickups like dimarzio distortion or SD full shred SH10 pickups, like songs from Forbidden the forbidden evil album and twisted into form , step by step, etc. the reason is its 'vintagy' and maybe an amp like a diezel hagen, a fryette sig X, marshall jcm, peavey triple XXX , solid state amps, and be better in a mix and on loud stage, like van halen. maybe joyo has a modern voiced version of a boost, they have a clean boost pedal is that one the joyo 'ultimate drive'?

My only complaint is that it does not have the monkey graphic that the Harley Benton version has and I NEED the monkey graphic.
    edit: I get the feeling that when this pedal was being designed that they were using a 6505/5150 to test with as I thought it played really well with that Peavey low mid thing that Peavey has. Maybe I am just tone deaf or not hip to the cool sound.
