- Dave Vanderstrike guides you through the 3 pitfalls of branding that all to many brands in the Evil Mega Corporation market are falling prey to.
This video is satire. Any similarity to actual corporations, living or dead, or actual events, is purely coincidental.
#branding #evil #megacorporation
0:00 Evil is a cutthroat business for Mega Corporations
0:48 Evil is not a brand personality. You need one.
2:39 Naming: How not to be tediously predictable
4:08 Visual Identity: As Important as Uniforms
4:40 Your logo - time for a brand refresh
5:07 Tired Typography - there are alternatives
5:56 Don't forget about color
6:41 Case Study: Glomnicorp / Oomii
7:31 Epilogue
This was fun. I hope you like it.

When Vanderstrike said: "Your corporate villainy should no extent so far as to ignore the existence of serif fonts", I really felt that.

Great line, nicely done.

Came here to say that. Glad I wasn't the only one who saw it's brilliance. 🙌
This video is 40% snark, 40% design education, 40% social commentary, 40% humor… I don’t know how Linus makes the math work out that way, but I guess he’s just an evil mastermind too?
...I don't think that's how percentages work...
@@magnushmann that's the joke

Fucking magnets;
how do they work?
Oomii 100% stole the logo of Sopra Steria, a french software development company :D One of their slogans are "The world is how we shape it". Too good to be true.
I guess they made their logo by taking circle in Illustrator and moving one anchor point to create a Pringle shape too. Evil minds think alike. ;)
And, apparently someone watched this and though: "Hey, I'm gonna call my AR company Oomii"
This is unironically a good advice for writing an evil megacorporation in a story
Oh yes, love me some late stage capitalism branding guides!
Late stage? We're just getting started!
The brand platform of the companies too needs reworking! More critical race theory and marxist undertones to really subvert everyday ordinary people and incite the minority communities.
should give brutalist communist designs a taste too
@@tylerpixel Disney on its way to say they support LGBTQ whilst simultaneously donating to politicans against abortion and now sodomy.
Binus Loman really freaked me out for a second there, I felt a lot more comfortable once Linus came back
As the CEO of a small EMC startup dabbling in bioengineering and bottled water, those branding tips are worth more than my stocks in the Chinese cotton industry.
We feel called out.
Hey, at least your logo isn't angular!
and you don't have Corp in your name 👌
To be fair your audience isn't the masses, it's other EMCs and general businesses. I'd say kakos is shootin straight.

Brilliant stuff. I'd love to see an Evil Corporate Logos Ranked follow up video!
Oooooooh yes yes this is a great idea
Yes please!
I loved this. I honestly forgot that wasn’t your native accent until you broke character at the very end!
Ikr? I only noticed how good his accent is bc I consciously remembered it isn't his accent
Yeah it was pretty spot on!
Honorable mention in the logo department to Aperture: they somehow made a circle pointy!
This video gets a coveted spot in my Liked videos. Reminds me of a list many years ago, it was called something like the Supervillain's Manifesto? Anyway, it had stuff like "The control and survelience room in my evil lair will have desks that can directly view the door and other points of entry." Etc.
The Evil Overlord List!
This video was alot of fun, it was like equal parts entertainment and education, just the right amount of each
This has a strong "Dr Horrible" vibe. And I'm here for it.
this video is like it’s straight out of the “sorry to bother you” universe. great movie and great video!
I've been playing a lot of Wipeout recently and all the car brands have this aesthetic locked down. I don't know if evil megacorp was the intention but with names like Auricom and Mirage it's hard to shake the feeling that some of these companies are selling bottled water.
There's some real world truth to that. One of the largest most influencial brands in motorsport is Red Bull, an energy drink.
car brands?
...bruh, they're racing teams.
Regardless, I agree with you wholeheartedly. In-universe it's confirmed that Auricom does more than just racing stuff. The other teams not so much.
@@TornaitSuperBird They manufacture the cars, the flavor text in 2048 confirms this.
I was thinking of Quirex and Piranha all the way through this .
Yeah mitsubishi are everywhere, if you do any form of art you have used their stuff at least once , fineliners, posca, mechanical pencils ect it's weird to think about, not to mention valtswagen make sausages as well as cars the scifi dystopia writes itself.
For the past few months I've been working on a comic which has several evil competing corporations, so let's just say seeing this video has CERTAINLY given me much to think about. Props and thanks.
One huge asterisk to add, these rules on branding and typography don't apply if your target demographic is PC gamers. Asus, MSI, Razer, Gigabyte, Acer with their Predator line, etc. All of these companies feature aggressive logos with black and gunmetal galore and the buyers eat it all up.
Likewise if your target demographic is DoD procurement officers.
I was thinking; Why can't I think of a single fictional evil corp that uses actual modern design like this?
My bet is that they are scared of accidentally getting so close to some actual company logo, they'll get sued.
Is Buy N Large from Wall-E considered evil?
The Oomii bit at the end was the cherry on top of a deliciously crafted black forest cake of design and humour with a side of social commentary.
Linus, you absolute genius!
I'm a sucker for hard-tech industrial typography, I mean Eurostile/Microgramma is such a classic to me, but I'd love to learn how to properly work with serif fonts someday.
Because I can't design anything other than hyper industrial futuristic shit that communicates "WE ARE SOULLESS ROBOTS; HOSTILE PRESENCE DETECTED; SENTRY SYSTEMS ONLINE"
Eurostile/Microgramma just looks so good on a spaceship, it's hard to say no. Plus it's very readable so looks great on signage!
If it's any consolation, the only fonts I ever see on the factory floor at work is Arial, Courier New, TNR on the really old documents, and in rare cases TNR that has been photocopied so many times that it looks like Courier New. It's why I got into typography, the industrial world has brilliantly smart people who don't give a rip about typography. "This page is important, so I'll make the entire thing Bold. There, job done."
Buy-N-Large from the movie Wall-E may not have the most inspired branding, but at least it's very far from any evil megacorporation clichés so I give it props for that
Hi,
Fantastic satire and social commentary at the same time. Do more like this in addition to your Logos and Letters works pointing out stuffs that we may have missed or overlooked. BTW: Love the "Chapple" reference.
Regards,
Aaron.
I concur. Please, Linus. More typography/branding/graphic design satire Please!
Fantastic writing by the way.
Nestlé out here with the slogan Good Food, Good Life.
fantastic video. like truly fucking great.
I loved this, but as an American, the final ad felt like a pharmaceutical commercial to me lol. Especially the very abstract logo, emphasis on the brand name at the end, and the sped-up disclaimer.
But perhaps that says something about how weird it gets when you’re allowed to advertise prescription drugs directly to the public.
this was brilliant! would love to see you comment on propagandistic ingame advertising in video games like bioshock, dishonored, cyberpunk, etc - or the visual sarcasm & wit of portal ii
This is great! Teaching us about design and typography while simultaneously giving some solid social commentary, nice work!
Blackwater, who you may remember from their profiteering and atrocities during the Iraq War, nailed this with their rebrand to “Academi”.
This is gold, here, take my engagement point.
Oomii are great. I have no bad words to say about them. I have been a customer for so long; I tried order new workboots after the pair that I had for the past 20 years were no-longer safe. Oomii sent two determined representatives who removed my legs at the knee cap, no long facilitating the new for new boots. Such efficiency! Thanks Oomii!
This video could have been titled "Comparing the Branding of Evil Mega Corporations in Movies with the Branding of Evil Mega Corporations in Real Life."
You do a VERY good American accent.
Just what I was thinking
Did not even notice until he mentioned it at the end
"let me know if you enjoyed it"
linus i literally just cried from laughter into my fucking hamburger
Everything about this video was fantastic- the satire, the design principles, the case study, the filmography, everything!
As someone who's currently putting together a fashion style poster for a fictional evil corporate I'm beyond greatful for this video. Very well done, Linus.
Love the change of pace! My fave vids are the logo ratings from London councils/Aussie brands but totally respect that you’re innovating, great content!
Branding in 2021 explained in 6 minutes.
This makes me think you should do a review of the logos & branding for the “Big Ten” AAA Prime Megacorporations from the cyberpunk TTRPG Shadowrun. IMO they are better than a lot of fictional brands, but not *great* and with a lot of *aggressively* 80s and 90s cliches that work towards the settings’ cyberpunk aesthetics, but some running counter to their stated-in-lore brand image. So lots of good and bad to analyze.
Whoa, this is probably your best video so far. Had lots of fun watching it!
That was one of the most brilliant videos I’ve ever seen, perfectly executed! (And “accent work”?-I thought you hired some voice professional specializing in North American accents.)
This video is CRIMINALLY underappreciated.
This was hysterical, I loved it so much. Had a perfect combo of poking fun at simplistic villains while also educating on brand awareness!
I want more of Dave Vanderstrike's consultations lol.
No joke, I think this was your best work yet. Right on brand, some depth and really fun. Thanks :)
I think you enjoyed making this slightly too much. We should keep an eye on you.
Best video of yours yet. I've been watching your videos every now and again, but this is what made me subscribe.
First off, excellent video, I loved it.
Second off, don't give them any ideas, the algorithm doesn't know what sarcasm is.
I love what you did with this. 10/10 CZcams Content. Informative, Funny and not bloated (you could probably have pushed the 10:00 mark, but didnt. cool.) I love that you fit all those tedious Movie Tropes in the video + the very obvious RealLife Brands.
This is pretty great. The parent company of the company i work for has Omni in its name and I have always wondered how that got chosen, of course the subsidiaries have much friendlier names.
finally got around to watching this and i'm glad i did - it's an interesting concept, executed pretty well
Yes Linus! I didn’t know how badly I wanted to see this video until you made it, and you knocked it out the park! 🙌🏻
This is superb work on som many levels, Linus.
This was a terrific addition to your already fantastic channel 👍😄
Man, I'd love to see your take on Omega Mart and Dramcorp branding, I think there's some great stuff there!
This was actually really useful for my short story. Helped my brand stand out!
Awesome video! This was a lot of fun,and gave me a smile the whole time. I think I might take on the project of mocking up what my company would look like as an EMC.
The video title was so inviting, I simply had to click it when I saw it in the recommended section.
Randomly came across your channel when the London logo videos were recommended to me! Instant sub! Also, unsure if this is intentional but the whole story about people queueing up for a factory tour only to be slaughtered upon arrival is very similar to a short story by Roald Dahl called 'Pig', traumatised me as a child but stuck around enough to be reminded when watching this XD
Probably wasn't intentional but a fun little detail.
This was expertly executed!!!! I loved the humor and the information was actually neat to learn about! Thank you!!!!!
This is fantastic!!! I'd love to see more detailed analysis of fictional brand design - evil or otherwise.
This was absolutely ridiculous and I loved it! It really makes you understand how bad these kinds of things can get without you even knowing it
No need to apologize for that accent work! As an American, you nailed 99% of the accent you were going for - the only word that gave it away was "asbestos"! :D

my partner & I watch all your videos & we thought this one was hilarious :)
You are 100% my favorite creator on CZcams. You make me wish I had gone into design!! 😩
splendid! please keep these coming
This video was shockingly enjoyable, I'd love to see more like this. The accent was great too!
This is such a great video. And there's some titanfall in there! Unexpected bonus.
getting major Evil Overlord list vibes. Great job.
Great North American accent, man! I love these kind of gimmicky videos; wouldn't mind them occasionally on the channel. Good work!
Just for fun, I prefer your longer videos - exceptionally well produced and interesting :)
So glad I found this channel
Incredible stuff Linus!! Keep up the awesome work
Lovely script & audio fx - nicely done.
This is actually a good world building idea for me, building an evil mega corpo enemy for my post modern game project. In game, it would be a satirical kind of evil mega corp, with sinister in-universe soft toned marketing through the TV commercials, billboards, news tablets and in-game internet (or rather DeepNet)
Several people defected and established a movement to fight against the evil mega corp, but the rebellion has resulted in a few bloodbath incident. Under their mission to "enlighten mankind in information highway", using their networking platform, the evil megacorp successfully censored out any "misinformations" about past rebel incidents and failed attempts at rescuing child workers.
Wait, this is somehow similar to Metal Gear Solid 2's plot....
**furiously takes notes**
Absolutely loved this so much!!!
How hard was it not to laugh while reading the script and filming? This was hilarious! 😂
keep up this new format!
This is great, man. It works on so many levels.
Honestly I'd love too see some more in depth look on fictional brands and branding. I remember when I was a kid being so fascinated by Wip3out's intro and all its animated logos.
This was great and I would love to see more of this
Fascinating. In my humble opinion, your accent was quite well done!
I CANNOT STOP LAUGHING!!! That was so great, thank you so much.
Woah, new to this channel and was totally convinced that was your voice, with maybe a compressor, but certainly not a pitched down American accent! Well done!
As a hobbyist graphic doodler, font nerd, and film and game culture enthusiast.. This was awesome! I had to smile aloud couple of times. Now I gotta get some snack an watch it again. :D
This was fantastic holy moly I love your content
That was great! Gave it a like...(now listening for the faint echo of jackboots down the hall :-0 )
We loved it, Linus!!!!
“Remember the brand names are fake, but the principles are real”
Navient: *stares in navient*
Almost whole video I kept in mind "Okja" intro, gosh, this film is awesome.
Dude this was amazing!
Wow this was brilliant mate, we're used to quality content but this was just fantastic!
Superb - your best yet! You need to put this as an auto-run on the front page of your corporate web-site - you’ll be inundated with EMCs seeking your services! … Dingo
LOVED this video this was so funny and well executed
Man, I could do with a whole series of this.
This was glorious, thank you!
Your videos are my new hyper focus
Great video as always, Linus :D
