Can a baby's due date be a month off when determined by an ultrasound?

  • A lot of women have questions about their due date and how the doctor determined it. And it's usually done 1 of 2 ways. First of all, it's important to seek early prenatal care before 13 weeks gestation. And at that point, the doctor will ask you if you've had regular cycles in the past and when your last period happened. If you know what date that was and you've been regular in the past, then the doctor can pretty reliably calculate a due date off of that, because a woman is fertile for 6 days out of each cycle - 5 days leading up to ovulation and on the day of ovulation. And we know that because you had a period, you weren't pregnant at that point in time, so you got pregnant during that next cycle when you ovulated and egg and sperm met up. If you had irregular cycles in the past or you're not sure when your last period was, then the doctor may send you for an early ultrasound. And this is where they measure the size of the growing fetus, and look at growing structures, and determine your gestational age from that, because a fetus will grow at a very consistent rate during the 1st trimester. So if your baby is measuring 8 weeks, you're reliably 8 weeks along.
Now there's also some confusion surrounding the amount of time the baby has been growing versus your gestational age. The entire gestational period is 40 weeks. However, a baby only grows for 38 out of those weeks, because the first 2 weeks of the gestational period are from the time of your first period till the time of ovulation and conception. So the baby is not actually growing for those first 2 weeks, so that confuses some people. They get caught up in the fact that the doctor told them they were 8 weeks, but the baby has only been growing for 6 - you're just 8 weeks gestation. We standardize it across the board.
Now another commonly asked question is, "Will my due date change if my baby is measuring abnormally small or large later on in pregnancy?". Now I told you that in the 1st trimester, a fetus will grow at a very consistent rate, but thereafter, it can differ. And there are underlying causes that can make a baby be abnormally small or abnormally large, and those are the things that a doctor needs to consider - not changing the due date. So let's say, for example, that you have an ultrasound at 8 weeks, and the doctor knows reliably how far along you are, and what your due date is. Later on in the pregnancy, if you have an ultrasound at 28 weeks for whatever reason and the baby is measuring 32 weeks, they won't just change your due date. And there's a couple of reasons for that.
Number 1, a doctor needs to consider underlying causes and decide if further investigation or treatment is necessary for that. And the 2nd is that if the doctor actually changed your due date and put you a month ahead, that's not going to change how much time the baby has spent growing in the womb, and their organs won't be fully mature when the baby is full-term. If you have more specific questions about your situation, don't hesitate to talk with your OB provider, and they'll be able to give you the best advice and information based on their knowledge of your situation. And if you have more questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at / intermountainmoms , and recommend us to your friends and family too.

I'm currently 34 weeks pregnant the 1st due date was estimated by a urine test and a guess of June 21st. However after many ultrasounds they're saying I'm measuring a week ahead of that to be est. June 14th. I'm feeling Braxton Hicks contractions occasionally already
. So I'm guessing maybe early June?

So my last period was June 20th 2023... I found out I was pregnant on August 7th... here in lies the problem the ultrasound is showing I'm 11 weeks 3 days..but with my calculations in 10 weeks 3 days.. I've been tracking my ovulation on the 7th day of my period so from the 20th June to the 17th July I had no intercourse with my husband. How then can my conception date be the week of the 10. My cycle runs 37-50 days...

Hey! I ended up moving during my pregnancy and at first they said my date was October 1st and once I moved the new doctor said it was October 29th. I technically had a full blown period the week of Jan 4th, but I had a very light “period” in February. The old doctor made my date based off of the January 4th and the new doctor based it off of the February date. But I’m having contractions that are 10mins apart as of yesterday and I’m 2cm. 😳 Idk which date to go by at this point.

My OBGYN, told me that I was 15 Weeks- I found out on May 15th, I know for 100% I had my period in March 2nd-7th, I conceived around the 9th or 10th. I know I had my period & not just sporting because I had my fiancé go out & buy me tampons, & it was a regular 5 day long period... I know there is nooo way I’m that far along. When I found out in the hospital by a doctor that I was pregnant he said your about 2 weeks, which made sense. March 7th we conceived, I found out March 15th. Give a week or so.... she did a quick ultrasound & said firstly, the due date in February, then changed it too December im like nooo way?!! I even bought a heart beater too hear at home & my GF who’s a nurse said no way you’re 15 Weeks... your 2 1/2 Months not 4! Idk 😐 very confusing....

Once you hit your second trimester they can measure the size of the babys head and tell you pretty accurately how far along you are. However, it can be normal to be a week or two off. But if you know when you got pregnant then go with that.

My due date had gotten changed 3-4 times but now that I’m 23 weeks, the measurements of the baby he is saying definitely & 100% January 2nd- my conception was May 4th which does make accurate sense since I had my period end of April & we did conceive that early in May.

Hi Dani, thanks a lot for the helpful videos! By my dates, I was about 12 weeks along at the time of my scan. The sonographer said I was 13.5 weeks along. However that's not possible as I know the time me and my husband conceived the child and if their dates are right, then I got pregnant when I was on my period! Or I got pregnant and then had my period (which was definitely my period, it was as usual, painful and heavy), which isn't possible. Can I just have a big baby? Thanks in advance.

Doc. I have a problem with my girl friend. Her last manstruation was on first a week of Feb. Then she went to a holiday on a 16th of march and she slept with someone else and that was on the 18th of March. She went to a Private Doctor for a scan yesterday(3rd May). She came with the results of 7 weeks 1 day. Off which it took us back to the 15th of March the last day we had sex before she go to a holiday. We've been dating for 15 months and without a condom and after I found out about this incident she came to me and told me that she's preg.
