Teachers should use chatGPT in their lessons by making the AI program write an essay and having the students analyze and critique the essay (in the classroom using old fashioned pen and paper).

Just get ai to write it and take notes and pieces from it then write your own.

I think that’s s the power of the chatbot. And make sure the student references ChatGPT as a source. It’s no different than using Wikipedia or any other website for the same purpose.

AI or no; in academics there will always be students who cheat. In the real world whether a cheat is loathed or admired depends on efficiency gains. For a solo game developer these new technologies are force multipliers. I am positive this extends to other realms - we've seen it already. From images, text and audio to medecine, engineering and beyond. This is an opportunity for growth in creativity on all sides. For the first time in known history you all now have the tools easily at your disposal - open source in many regards - that you can run on your own machines. This is the great equalizer in many regards and it rides in on a tsunami wave to level the playing field.

If they cheat, this will continue into their career when they are exposed as frauds and end their career.

And that professor did just that when he caught the student. There are websites to use already that detect AI-written work so teachers shouldn’t be apprehensive about using ChatGPT. It’s an incredible tool. I’m a teacher and I love it. And I’m completely amazed by what it has done for me and my teaching.

@@nsreynolds8561 i think you are missing the point… The ai chatbot is doing “all” the work for the student, when a teach/professor assigns an essay, to use a chatbot to write does not show “their” knowledge in the subject matter, “their” understanding of the topics, and “their” ability to provide discourse on what they have learned… Essay writing is closer to life than multiple choice answer style questions, it shows us (as teachers / professors) the the material is being taught/understood. Not just at a base level of remembering, but at a higher level of comprehension that will allow them to connect deeper concepts and for them to draw “their” conclusions. Surely as a Teacher (as you claim), you should understand how much these ai chatbots undermines a students’ ability to learn and to show what they have learned. To use an ai chatbot is to not display what they have learned, because the artificial system is doing everything for them. And besides, Wikipedia isn’t a real resource, they need to be able to “research” and find trusted sources to support their claims. Wikipedia is a spring board to other sources, but shouldn’t be your one stop shop for information.

@@Vgiannoutsos Thank you for your input. I am a “real” teacher and have been since 1994. I teach English as a second language students and as a language teacher as well as a language learner myself, I can see the advantages of the chatbot in my case. You points are well-taken and I certainly can see where you are coming from dealing with native speakers English literature and similar classes where essays are used as an assessment tool. I’m just pointing out that like the calculator (I taught high school math for several years), the technology is not going to go away. At one point, I wanted to sit for the CPA exam. This was in the 1980s and the exam was given without using calculators. I had been using calculators by that point (I’m an engineer by training) for 10 years. It was a ridiculous rule as all of those new CPAs would be using calculators once they arrived at their new positions. I did not continue with the program.
I disagree that these AI bots will hurt student learning.
