Oh Karen Carpenter... you were just marvelous. I love you and your music, and I'm just 21 years old. Your talent tops all the crap we hear nowadays. Brilliant SINGER AND MUSICIAN!
I am a fossil of 60 years, and the Carpenters were of my childhood. Karen's voice was a warm, soothing blanket to me, when everyone else was supposed to be digging Led Zeppelin. I think that there are probably many talented & gifted singers/muscians today, but the one glaring omission is humility and self deprecation. To me, it seems that too many performers are either into themselves, or think they are God's gift to entertainment. Karen NEVER came across that way.
AMAZING! Her contralto was so deep, powerful, thick and rich. Such an unique tone. Her low notes are heaven. Same with her sustained ones. Specially when she mixed in some high parts of her songs. Her voice is a treasure.
Sang it from the depths of her soul. Gave it 100% of her energy, but being so thin, I'm sure her energy was limited. This would explain how quietly the band played the first half of the song so as not to drown her magnificent voice out. Fantastic performance. Can only think of two other female singers who could match Karen in terms of vocal perfection live, Dusty Springfield in the 60's and early 70's and Anne Murray.
I saw a LOT of the big acts from 1968 right up until now, and they do their stuff as good as anyone, and she really puts a lot of today's female artists to shame.
@Undefeated92 You are SO right. What tone. And as time goes by, I have concluded that this woman has one of the most beautiful and immediately recognizable voices ever recorded.
She is one of those who have that one-in-a-million voice. When Karen sings she always touches the listeners' hearts, her voice is so haunting in a good way.
I was 7 years old and probably about 3 miles away from their last concert of the 3 week tour at the old Brisbane Festival hall on May, 27, 1972.Wish I had been much older too.
Great live version of this song. Not as good as her 1971 BBC performance, but still great. I love the way she sways during the middle interlude. So sensual! The woman did have sex appeal.
In whatever field of music that interests you there are all sorts of goodies in the vaults of networks in Australia, many of whch havent been seen for decades even by Australians.
Yes,this is certainly the case with the HSV7 specials filmed at Festival Hall of Herp Alpert and the Tijuana Brass(April,1967) and the Jackson 5(June,1973).
I can also add a top-rated Liberace special from November 1971. Roy Oribison was also filmed at Festival Hall on October 2, 1972, parts of this special(obviously using the same director and crew for the Carpenters special as the camerawork is identical) can be seen on youtube.
@ravello99 Yes, her voice has an unique seal. In my own opinion, nobody can sound like Karen. Her perfect pitch and midtone were just characteristics that only she could have according to her vocal type. Voices are unique and I do believe you can find your greatness in your own pipes and make them shine. Karen is a perfect example. She was a phenomenal and unique singer. Her voice was simply unique.
I never understood why I loved her while linking her with liberace lawrence welk and vanilla ,,,, it was because I loved her and there was no one else better
If in UK or Australia they had to perform live by law - USA was much easier production wise to lip-sync, although Ella Fitzgerald sang live against Karen's pre-record for their duetted medly in 1981.
i did not know that, thanks for the info. i think it cool that it was by law they had to sing live, if that was the case these days most stars would have no career lol.
It is fortunate that Australias CH 7 network altered their original plans for a Carpenters TV special. It was apparently planned to produce an hour Carpenter special at Sydneys 7 studios, such a special would have almost certainly have been lip synched. However, things changed and the first Melbourne concert was recorded instead, a 100 % live performance.
anitabreakone It's really up to the sound person in the house to adjust the levels on each mic since the performer on stage has no idea how loud they're coming through to the audience.
When is somebody going to strip the Carpenters sound down and leave us with KC's extraordinary voice? Only the gods in their wisdom give a voice of this quality to a singer. Give us a chance to hear it in its pure form without all the window dressing.
They have done many! Search, "Karen Carpenter Acapella" on CZcams. You'll hear stripped down recordings of her vocals, drums & Joe Osborn's bass. Her voice like the finest crystal!
Interesting piano arpeggio at 1:53! Not quite right. Goes to show how Live the performance is. A lovely performance of course. 1:53 is a link. Click it!
She was pretty and sexy , i wish girls / women wouldn't focus on their differences and 'imperfections' of their face and bodies and then turn to anorexia. One of the sexiest most desirable things about a female is her comfort with her own body and ways.

Still one of the most hauntingly gorgeous songs ever written and THE BEST version as well.
She's the greatest female vocalist ever. I will always love her voice.
AMAZING!
Her contralto was so deep, powerful, thick and rich. Such an unique tone.

Her voice is a treasure.
She can rip your heart out. Rare wonderful LIVE performance. Band understands all about dynamics.
ripped mine ...

Lori, you really know your female singers... no comment :)
I know I do. Not everyone has a good ear, it's sad really....no comment : )
i know you do... life is a full hat of tricks! :p
She really showed off here!! Stylized and captivating. Phenom.
Sometimes one of God's Angels does visit Earth.
Karen Carpenter is one such Angel.
Thank you, Karen Carpenter.
i don't believe in God or angels but Karen was a gift from the heavens
And I bet she is one beautiful angel💕
And she returned to the arms of god but left her legacy here on earth, absolutely mesmerising…….
She was great and a legend,
I cherish every live version of Superstar by the Carpenters.
I saw a LOT of the big acts from 1968 right up until now, and they do their stuff as good as anyone, and she really puts a lot of today's female artists to shame.
ZavnorZ Yes, she does.
And male ones too...
All of them
Anniversary of Karen's passing. Truely missed. Beautiful song.
@Undefeated92 You are SO right. What tone. And as time goes by, I have concluded that this woman has one of the most beautiful and immediately recognizable voices ever recorded.
I first heard this song in the 1990s and couldn't believe how good it was. Truly an unforgettable song from a real superstar. Rip Karen
beautiful.....her voice...and his music....bring you to tears.....even live.
even live ???
Just stunning
She is one of those who have that one-in-a-million voice. When Karen sings she always touches the listeners' hearts, her voice is so haunting in a good way.
She's not be with us in mortal form, but her spirit lives on here on you tube ✌
The song is just about a obsessed groupie, but Karen Carpenter sings this song in a way that creates a whole different meaning to it.
THX FOR RIPPING MY HEART OUT
good god, still awesome
PERFECTION Karen
Music at its finest
FHACK!!! She rips my heart out of my chest. Her voice and singing is so soul wrenching & angelic. I remember, Karen, I remember I told you I love ya!
I was 7 years old and probably about 3 miles away from their last concert of the 3 week tour at the old Brisbane Festival hall on May, 27, 1972.Wish I had been much older too.
the vedio..is old..but u can clearly heard..the voice. as clear as todays music..damn. the most expensive ..fragile voice..karen..ur one of a kind.
the beautiful song
Great live version of this song. Not as good as her 1971 BBC performance, but still great. I love the way she sways during the middle interlude. So sensual! The woman did have sex appeal.

Wow, they really knew how to deliver live.
Thank you for posting this I love it I never got to see the carpenters live this is as close to it as I'll ever get I put it in my favorites

Agreed!
Karen Carpenter's singing voice had what should be described as a melancholy texture and timbre.
this woman has charm
Even in the crappiest of all recording circumstances, that voice transcends. It hits you where it counts - the heart.
One word, PERFECTION.
I was only 5 years old then and only 150 miles away from Karen, so wish I was older then and had went and seen her and gave her a big cuddle
De las canciones que siempre permanecen en el corazón.
I never understood why I loved her while linking her with liberace lawrence welk and vanilla ,,,, it was because I loved her and there was no one else better
Stunning
VERY BEATIFULL
Deus cuide dela. Queria muita viva entre nós. Saudades eternas!!
Richard Carpenter...please, SHOUT OUT!
hermosa mía chiquilla ahí tenia mi edad jejeje
How lucky we were to have Karen sing in our country
So nice.
cool thanks
Really missing Cubby O’Brien on drums here. 🥁
At last a true live version, all the others i've seen were lip-synched; beautiful!
If in UK or Australia they had to perform live by law - USA was much easier production wise to lip-sync, although Ella Fitzgerald sang live against Karen's pre-record for their duetted medly in 1981.

Special
Richard sounds too loud when singing with her like his mic is maybe too loud. He should have lain back a little.
anitabreakone It's really up to the sound person in the house to adjust the levels on each mic since the performer on stage has no idea how loud they're coming through to the audience.
No sound check? I don't know it just seems kind of strange.
anitabreakone He must be in silence.

He added the 6th.
Only Karen sounds great (as always) in this performance.
She was pretty and sexy , i wish girls / women wouldn't focus on their differences and 'imperfections' of their face and bodies and then turn to anorexia.
One of the sexiest most desirable things about a female is her comfort with her own body and ways.
