Mitutoyo M plan 20x review + Disassemble + Amazing sample photo

- I am disassembling here very expensive (£1,596) professional microscope objective from Mitutoyo and that is M plan 20x NA 0.42
Because this one has a delamination problem I had to disassemble the objective to confirm this. I still haven't tested it out so I am looking forward to seeing the results.

How did you identify the delamination problem before disassembling lens?
How do you attach the Mutitoyo to the 105mm lens?
Delamination was visible even from outside just by looking into objective. I've attached the mitutoyo on the camera lens by many different reductions step ups, step down rings (I don't remember properly) and also mitutoyo adapter. I think they sell mitutoyo fit to M42 if I remember it right, than you can use it as a normal 42mm reduction to get iinto a required mm fit of your lens.

I'm trying to understand use of microscope objectives like this one...can you tell me, does the Mitutoyo M Plan need another "tube lens" between it and the camera sensor? I think it must since it's an infinity objective? What would the image on the sensor look like if you didn't have the intermediate tube lens?
Every microscope objective that shows an infinity symbol needs a 200mm tube lens. But for some lenses you can use a 150mm tube lens or even a 300mm tube lens, The sharpness probably won't be so great but you will have bigger or smaller magnification. I think Mitutoyo 10x also worked quite well with a 100mm tube lens but magnification was less. I don't remember these things very correctly as I haven't been doing this photography already for many years. If you didn't use a tube lens the sharpness would be completely off.

I wonder how big an image quality difference there is between using a random 200mm focal length camera lens and a made-for-Mitutoyo tube lens like www.edmundoptics.com/f/accessory-tube-lenses/12619 or www.novoflex.de/en/focusing-rack-castel-micro/tube-for-direct-camera-use-of-mitutoyo-m-plan-lenses.html.
I tried to disassemble mine, but the cap is super tight. Did you use heat gun or something else to softening the glue?
Sorry to hear, I would definitelly not use any heat gun with these objectives. It can maybe damage some optics inside as there are elements that are "glued" to each other and I would not risk that. If something is very tight and I can't dissasemble it I am trying to use rubber pieces to put on outer body to grab on and apply force again and again until it eventually works. Otherwise I would give up on dissasembling if this method doesn't work for me.
When you record video, don't look at the screen. Look at the lens.

Did you ever tested this lens? Is it still sharp? I believe i'v just bought one with the same problem for 500
Sorry to hear that. This particular lens wasn't sharp because of this problem, but I also had another one 20x in mint condition and that was very sharp. Mitutoyos are generally very sharp objectives if they have higher NA.
@@TomeRodrigo I do not know exactly if it is delamination or some very tiny specs of dust on the back of the front element. It is only visible when i shine an led torch in through the front lens or using direct sunlight . There I can see some very tiny specs that kind of reflect. could be normal but I don`t know exactly and I have no other mitu to compare it to. Have a look at it I posted some pictures here:

From looking at those photos, I see no problem there, maybe some little dust particles only. Does your lens show any sharpness defects while photographing micro? I've been also on that page many years ago and posted some photos there, but haven't been there like 10 years now.
@@TomeRodrigo Thanks for your reply, maybe that is not something that will effect the iq after all. I was thinking that these things are immaculate when produced in factory and would come out perfect without even a spec of dust trapped inside them, maybe I`m wrong. I am still buying equipment and have nothing to take pictures with yet, even more I have nothing to compare it with.. I could not resist not to buy that 10x as is was 570eruo inc tax and listed new(doubt that). I am currently building a 4 axis machine just for macro footage, hopefully will be also using this lens.
I also don't know how some dust gets into these lenses. Good luck with your equipment and photography. I once bought Mitutoyo 20x 0.42 BD plan for 220 pounds including tax from the US in a mint condition. The seller was selling it as a risk item, not knowing anything about it, so I had to take a risk as there was no return. Turned out to be an absolutely MINT condition objective, like new from the factory. I mean, when I sold it I've earned extra 450 pounds on the top of buying price.
That "delaminated element" isn't delaminated. That's fungus. You can clearly see the mycelia on the outer ring and the pattern and form of the patches is a typical fungus formation.
what to do when this happens? get some penicillin? :D
@@ipadize Depends how far advanced the fungus is. If it's only superficial you can remove it with solvents (carefully), clean and wipe every surface with alcohol to kill the spores etc. But if it's very advanced it will have started to destroy the surface of the glass. Also: if one lens has fungus you should keep it away from your other lenses/equipment. Fungus likes to spread.
