Logitech MX Master 3 scrolling and wheel issues - Watch this BEFORE you buy!

  • *** PLEASE READ:
    It’s been over a year since I uploaded but since I got so many questions I wanted to update:
    Of course flicking the mouse in the air is NOT the intended use, what I tried to demonstrate is how “loose” the scroll wheel is which causes it to be very inaccurate and skip around when used normally.
    Also, this mouse behaves very badly with Apple devices and I wanted to make people see that, because if you are like me, you will watch a ton of videos promoting this mouse as a great accessory to iPads for example, and that’s simply NOT the case!
    Also to clarify that I of course played with the Logitech Options software settings quite a bit over time.
    *If your experience is better than mine, then that just highlights Logitech has a Quality control issue as the internet is flooded with complaints for this mouse.
    1. WINDOWS - on Ratchet mode it’s ok. On free spin it is not very accurate, it doesn’t register some scrolls and skips ahead.
    2. MAC - On Ratchet mode it is ok. Acceptable but nothing compared to apple’s experience with the Magic Mouse or trackpad. On Free spin it is super inconsistent, skips scrolls, jumps around and simply not usable.
    3. IPAD - don’t bother!

    Mine (MX Master 3 for Mac) was delivered today and scrolling issues made me return it. I could scroll up and down only when doing it very slow, any quicker movement and it will be almost completely ignored. I have tweaked all the possible settings but it definitely doesn't work well on M1 Max machine. I also didn't like how loose the scroll wheel seemed to be. It would bounce side the side when moved a bit quicker. My old wired G203 mouse works flawlessly, it scrolls, clicks and just does what mouse should do... Hopefully support for new macs will get better over time, but Logitech lost in my eyes.

    Got my mouse today and I had issues with inconsistent scrolling (specially when scrolling up in Ratchet Mode), I've searched on several videos and sites... This is what worked for me (Ratchet Mode) and now feels good enough: Smooth Scrolling=OFF, Smart Shift = OFF, and Wheel Sensivity = almost or all the way up.
    The issues for me were just on ratchet mode, when i used the free spin mode with the top button it always worked fine for me

    I bought the Mx master 3 today and immediately realized the "scroll" problem you mentioned and returned it.
    I think the problem is with the MX master and anwhere 3 series:
    Problem is scroll whell (magspeed (magnetic) scroll feature)
    This feature is for fast page scrolling but does not work properly at all. (especially when scrolling up the page)
    Probably, I will not buy MX 3 series again and will buy 2 series.

  • @LouisChiaki
    @LouisChiaki Před 2 lety +7

    LOL, Sure it is not gesture control? ;)
    I got the similar scrolling problem though I think the part where you lift and turn the entire mouse up and down to trigger the scrolling is technically not a bug. It is just angular momentum conservation. Since the wheel is heavy but almost frictionless, when you turn the mouse body forward or backward, the mouse wheel will try to stay at the same angle compared to the desk. However, since the mouse body is turning, this is equivalent to turning the wheel backward or forward.

      @@engimo5253 There are more bugs than what's shown in this video. Many gesture-button options are downright unfunctional on both Mac and PC. Given the actual functionality of this mouse, it's probably worth $40 at most even though its price tag is $100. There's external software you can download to create gesture buttons on any mouse that's literally more reliable than the MX Master 3.

  • @SenithDR
    @SenithDR Před 2 lety +12

    That’s called moment of inertia.. What that means is resistance an standstill object gives when you try to move it and vice versa..
    So here the scroll wheel is soo smooth that when you rotate/move your mouse moment of inertia is able to keep scroll wheel standstill to the point it can get registered as a scroll input..
    I suggest enabling ratcheting mode when doing fast movements.

      i think it's a feature, actually. this happens because the mouse is set to freespin. if you switch it to ratchet, it will work normally. there is also an option called smartshift which lets you transition from ratchet to freespin by rolling the scroll with more power (the amount of power needed is configurable)

    Fucking Logitech, I'm looking at this model after my G700s's scroll is acting up - again. This time it's the left scroll button, last time it was the scroll itself. I just can't get over how good the original G9 was, I gifted it to a friend and now I'm actually thinking of asking him to return it. It's over a decade old and only had a cable replacement a few months ago, it's just insane how much it outlived itself, it's like a person living to be a 120 years old and still healthy. It's a living testament to how better Logitech used to be. I'm completely hooked on hyperscroll and the ergonomics and the Logitech profiles so I feel stuck with them, but they just can't seem to put out a model that's as trustworthy as the old G9. I really wish I bought two back then..

    I disabled the SmartShift setting, and set it to ratchet only, but it still spins way too much if I flick it fast - with almost no friction. I'm not sure if that's intentional, or if mine is defective, but it's completely different behaviour than my MX Master 1. I'm losing my mind over this, and I'm worried that if I return it for a replacement, it will have the same issue.

  • @jesselam5867
    @jesselam5867 Před 3 lety +8

    I didn't find too much issues with mine (Or at least I wasn't bothered by it). The wheel spinning itself, in my opinion is a byproduct of free spinning feature. so you can't really complain. If you just got a bearing (or fidget spinner) and waved it back and forth expecting it not the spin at all, that's not going to happen.
    As for the scrolling experience, I didn't necessarily experience any inconsistencies throughout day to day use. Although if scroll back and forth on ratchet mode on one notch. I guess you can notice a bit of an inconsistency like the timing is like a millisecond off at times, but even then you really have to look for it, otherwise I wouldn't have noticed at all. No one actually uses a mouse like that either, so I personally wouldn't see it as an issue.
    But what I did find when using on mac was that even though I didn't notice inconsistencies, the experience was really choppy. This had nothing to do with the mouse itself however, from my understanding apple only allows smooth scrolling on it's own apple mouse's, so it explains why. I've had an poor experience with another mouse cheap wireless mouse, so I know it's not just my mouse. Logitech inbuilt smooth scrolling is pretty bad, so I just install another extension called MOS, which allows you to fine tune your scrolling speed, solving my issues.
    Overall I really enjoyed the mouse, the haptic feedback from the metal scroll wheel is so satisfying, and the free spin is also fun to play with. Programmable buttons are pretty useful when you are working on a large display as I've programmed it to go back and forth though pages so I don't have to reach up every time I want to go back a webpage. High DPI mouse also provides a much better experience if you have a 4k display.

    Had this issue with my first gen MX Master, the wheel would scroll by itself when moving the mouse, and it was way worst when using the Unifying receiver versus Bluetooth, probably because the higher polling rate of the former made it more sensitive, at first I thought it was a Windows versus macOS issue
    I didn't bother getting it replaced because most of the time my finger was resting on the wheel, but Logitech has good warranty support on things like this, I had a G700 that wouldn't track on all surfaces and they sent a replacement without me having to return or destroy the broken one

Also Logitech would've simply replaced your mouse of the scrolling issues proved to be a product malfunction and not just you being a brickhead mac user that can't deal with literally any piece of hardware that isn't already fine-tuned out of the box. These mices only reach their full potential once you configure them. It's literally one of the main reasons to even buy an over $10 mouse, honestly.

    That's the laser hitting the wall acting like a mouse pad. Mine does it too when I pick it up. Totally normal

    Wondering if the MX master 2s has the same issues with the scrolling? I’m thinking about getting the 2s if its more reliable

      Problem with the MX Master 2s was for me that the gesture controll went defective over the years and was always pressed which made the whole mouse not work. Had to pry it open so that the gesture Button is unstuck. Cant turn off the gesture Button, that does not help.

      @@aces8481 it's fucking annoying.. only issue i have with this mouse is the scroll wheel.. Sometimes you shouldnt fix what isn't broken.

    For everyone who has "scroling problem". Solution (for me) is really simple. Just push the minibutton which is next to scrooling wheel.

    Mine was bought a week ago. I had the same scrolling issues as shown here: czcams.com/video/gfIDI1qiurc/video.html
    I'm waiting for a replacement, just to check if it was a failing unit or a crappy product.

      I got a replacement unit and although it is definitely more precise, if you try and scroll up and down like the video you linked it will still skip commands. Especially in free spin mode, but not so much in ratchet mode as you have to move through the notches to register the commands. I think it's just the design of this mouse using the new magnetic wheel, some people won't have a problem with that - I'm kind of getting used to it but maybe that is something that will bother you
