    If a couple has stupid preventable fights in everyday life, they should absolutely not ride a tandem together. Whatever's going on in a relationship, good or bad, riding a tandem together will magnify it. Bad communication and hurt feelings? Yeah, magnified. Love and joy and non-blaming communication and trust in each other? Also magnified.

  • @thinksimon

    Tandem requires a lot of trust, and not just from stoker. If you are a captain and you feel that stoker moves excessively, you have to trust that there is a reason behind it (no pun intended). The right approach is to ask if anything is going on. BTW, this applies not only to riding tandem...

  • @davidcummings5826

    Tandems take lots of communication, trust and listening - mostly the captain listening to the stoker, especially if they aren't as confident as the captain. But it has given us a way to bike together more as we travel at different speeds when on separate bikes. We don't bike everywhere on the tandem, but we bike more with the tandem, and that's always a good thing!

    We have toured worldwide on a Santana Beyond tandem for 12 years. Seriously the tandem is the only place we literally never argue. We started out as club riders on singles. First tandem ride was a Co-Motion Primera a bike shop lent us for a week. Loved it! Once in the early days I adjusted the timing chain and neglected to synchronize the captain and stoker cranks. That was very weird. We recently had an issue with gearing that wouldn’t change properly. We replaced a lot of stuff that was getting worn out. Still had gear change issues bike mechanics couldn’t figure out. After three weeks of frustration my wife said to check the lugs and make sure the frame is tight. Bingo. She is a genius sounds better then I’m an idiot. Tandem mechanics are very hard to find. The point is we ride a tandem. We solve problems. We make it work. They call them tandem teams for a reason. Out of scores of tandem friends we know one couple that always fight on their tandem. These guys are super fun doing everything else. So, they don’t ride tandem much. So many tandem tours with hundreds of couples all getting along happily has been our experience. Of course we enjoy being exceptional. Sounds like you started out planning that the tandem was not going to work. Not a good plan. Our sons were raised as cyclists. Both of them loved cycling. Neither of them can get their partner to ride a bike. So, we send them pics and videos from around the world and they do their own thing. Sadly we ride with our sons rarely now. So many great family rides are just memories. We make vacation exceptions to be with family but always feel like this would be so much more fun on a bike. Bicycling is definitely not for everyone. We gave up a very long time ago trying to get friends started into cycling. Never happens. We don’t know how couples end up on tandems together. I’ll start asking. There are so many tandem couples yet they are so few and far between. Exceptional really. Ride on.

    My wife and I started tandem riding when we were first dating. We have a collection that varies but has included a tandem from the 1890s, a tandem from WWII England that has a side car, folding tandems, mountain bike tandems, tandems with small wheels, super cheap tandems and expensive tandems. They are not for everyone, but we have loved and enjoyed each for what they are.
    When someone whines about why they do not work for them and/or their partner it a reflection on them and not the machines. It is a bit comical because what they are revealing are issues about themselves that they are often not consciously aware of but that others notice even without the tandem.

    My son (11 yo) and I just rented one in Hilton Head. Haven’t had so much fun riding with him in a long time. I think probably different for a parent and kid tho. When riding 2 bikes as a parent and kid it is never relaxing for the parent as you are always worried and watching for them and usually have to slow down continuously to allow them to keep up. Tandem gets rid of all that. And as a bike for cruising and getting out together as opposed to serious fitness riding it allows you to talk and enjoy the sights and the ride together. Definitely more of a combined experience riding a tandem than riding solo which is more like two solo experiences who once in a while get together during the ride to talk and share experiences.

    Captain has at least 98% responsibility for a tandem ride being enjoyable and safe. I understand need for stoker to be steady on track tandem in a sprint, but I've never had issue with back seater, child or adult, moving around on a road tandem. Back seater has to move around for comfort, to get the snacks or camera out of the rear carrier, stow their and my jacket as it warms up, etc. In a pace line, I usually ask stoker to check if we're clear of traffic before pulling off the front. Yes, the back seater can steer the bike, but the captain needs to just roll with it, it's more a feeling than actual velocity vector change. Road tandems tend to be rediculously stable, I can ride mine from the back seat with nobody up front goofing around in the parking lot.

    heard all the horror stories - and frankly how we fell into and bought our tandem, last couple just couldn't do it. Being new to it for both of us we sat down and discussed what our expectations should be for the first ride, both admitting that we know very little and agreed to put our left foot down together before starting or stopping, start pedaling together with the right foot and no matter what happens - its OK. Kept our expectations low and remembered 1 Corinthians 13 :) Needless to say we had a blast and look forward to every chance we get to ride together. Best wishes to anyone giving it a shot - it can be really enjoyable if you are patient with each other.

      NO. This is BAD advice because a tandem handles COMPLETELY differently with 1 rider than it does with 2. So that approach is NOT going to help.
      #tandemadventurers

    • @7thkansascav468
      @7thkansascav468 Před 3 lety +5

      It also handles very differently than a regular bike even with just one rider and the difference between it and a regular bike with just the captain is greater than the difference between riding it solo and adding the stoker. At least it is on our old tandem but maybe years of riding motorcycles made the transition easier for me but he would have at least had a feel for the difference and been ready for it when the stoker got on. Plus, if the tandem has mechanical issues it's better to find them out before the stoker gets on. I always take ours out for a solo before we take it anywhere to make sure nothing has been knocked out of adjustment or alignment. Since the bike was an unknown and he was supposedly a bike mechanic he should have taken it for a solo first to check it out . He would have noticed the problem beforehand and they could have at least given tandem riding a fair test. I suspect however the outcome wouldn't have been much different in this instance.

    • @theadventurebiker
      @theadventurebiker Před 3 lety +2

      @@7thkansascav468 Yes, a tandem with only 1 rider (captain) on board *does* handle completely differently from a regular, single bike (less responsive steering, wider turning radius, etc.) but I completely disagree that the difference in handling between a tandem w/1 rider on board and a single bike is greater than a tandem with 1 vs. 2 riders on board. A tandem w/ 1 rider can still be flicked around to some extent and quite easily responds to steering input for directional changes etc. It's different yet somewhat similar to the characteristics of a single bike. If that makes any sense. But the added weight of a 2nd rider on the back (the stoker) *COMPLETELY* changes that in every sense. You can no longer "flick" the bike or aggressively "dive" into turns (which *can* be done on a tandem with only 1 rider). Corners and turns on a tandem w/ 2 riders have to be executed with smooth movements & smooth lines or else this may disrupt the stoker or in a worse case could cause a loss of control and thus a crash.

      @@theadventurebiker I see your point but our tandem handles very differently than my singles even with just me on it. I'm building a new bike for this year and it may be different but I still say a solo ride would have "helped".
      For ME personally there was enough difference between my other bikes and the tandem riding it solo and from years of riding motorcycles I had some notion of how the added weight and dynamics of a stoker were going to effect it and I was much better prepared. But I also took the time to discuss braking, shifting, how weight shifts would cause the bike to veer one way or the other, etc. with my stoker before we ever rolled the bike out of the garage for our first ride together. We also worked on signals. There were some miscues but all in all our first ride together went quite smoothly and each ride after got better and better. I'm in the process of moving the components to a different frame with a lower top bar for the stoker, it may handle very differently.
      I still say a solo ride would have helped but from the sounds of it not nearly enough. He should have familiarized himself with the bike first regardless, sounds like there were other factors at work. At the end of the day it all comes down to how well you and the stoker can work together, my stoker and I have been married almost 23 years and have never had a fight. Disagreements, irritations and annoyances sure but never a fight. Tandems aren't for everybody but if you can make one work they are awesome.
