They were two Australians based in the U.K. during the 1970s at least. I heard their cover of Cathy’s Clown in the latter half of 1979 but didn’t know who they were. It’s only in 2011, I got to know who they were. Better late than never I suppose but missed a great deal.
I was 21 when this came out, had a 58 Volkswagen safari van, traveling up and down pacific coast highway surfing until we could barely stand up when we got out of the water....living like we had no time to lose. Where did the good times go?
Damn the memories this great song brings back to me , 1979 and its summer time again and awesome high school days and fun nights hanging with the gang. This song brings it all back. Thanks TARNEY SPENCER BAND.
It is a big deal. Our cool tune in the band was The Good Life by Tim Weisberg, also on A&M Records. Another cool under-recognized band on A&M was Hudson Ford.
I always felt it was a culmination of the 70s, and was more defining of the seventies time than it was ahead of its time like it was trying to define the 80s. This has a classic 70s feel, and the changes in rhythm make you continue to pay attention. Sadly, the more music changes, the more it seemed to have to hold the same beat to attract that kind of audience, but this track defies all that to perfection.
This song just came to me out of the blue. I’m very grateful for this. I remember it very well and wish I could download it on my phone/iCloud. It’s truly an amazing song that brings back so many wonderful memories
Loved this song as a kid then would go years and years without hearing it. Downloaded it off Napster around 2001. My kids got to grow up with it, fond memories. They're all grown now.

Yeah, me too. I remember hearing this on the radio in mid to late 70's, when I was in grade school. And for some reason it popped up in my head recently, and I remembered how awesome it was. And I realized I didn't even know the name of the band that did it. Same story with Driver Seat. And, I gotta see if the rest of the songs are as good as this one. Even though it was the only one they played on the radio, back then. I found out that Tarney Spencer Band had at least 3 albums. I wanna hear the rest..... almost 40 years later, I wanna finally hear the rest.
1979 what a fantastic year for music-this song and Escape by Rupert Holmes are #1 and #2 on my 1979 list of best songs. One of the best LP covers of all time as well
In my book, 1979’s best songs were “Hold on” by Ian Gomm, “Driver’s Seat” by Sniffn’ the Tears and “My Sharona” by the Knack. Killer rock songs that were still fending off disco.
this was the song, that I never could figure out who sang it, and I had the lyrics all wrong. Apparently, a logarithm I hit with You Tube threw this up as a suggestion, and I had found THAT song, that I had thought I had lost to time.

Underrated Classic.

I remember this on The Loop 98 and WLS both AM and FM in the early '80s.
