Driving Around Chicago Ghetto - Washington Park Neighborhood in 4k Video

Filmed on Sunday, July 23, 2023, I drive around the Washington Park Neighborhood on the south side of Chicago to see what's going on.
The park in this community area was named for President George Washington in 1880.
In the mid-to-late 19th century, a large number of Irish and German railroad workers and meatpackers made Washington Park home.
A turn-of-the-20th-century housing construction boom along with increases in the African American population of the midwest during the Great Migration resulted in the movement of lower-income and predominantly African American Chicagoans southward. Soon, the European-American inhabitants mostly left the area.
The area rapidly changed from European American to African-American in the 1920s. By 1930, the population was only 7.8% white. By 1960, the population was 0.5% white.
From 1950 to 2000 the total population of the neighborhood declined from 57,000 to 14,146.
Today, this neighborhood has one of the highest crime rates in Chicago, with more than 120 violent crimes reported per 1,000 residents.
43% of residents stated that they feel safe in their neighborhood "most or all of the time".
23% of housing units are vacant, 54% of households are receiving food stamps, and 44% of the population is living below the poverty line. 27% of the population is unemployed.

What sucks the most about Washington Park is that there's genuinely a lot of good people who live there. The gang violence needs to stop....poverty will keep you in a hole ...and its always hella hard to get out.

Yea I was surprised, was expecting way more abandoned buildings. Everywhere you see an empty lot was probably a broken down house that got bulldozed

I really enjoyed that...people are somewhat proud of where they live because it wasn't full of garbage...my husband used to live in that area years ago...
