I first played Umineko 12 years ago. I replayed it now, in lockdown, this time together with my boyfriend. Since I knew the answers, I kept asking him questions that would eventually make him piece the info and find a solution for himself. He figured out most of the howdunnits of the first 4 episodes before we began the answer arcs. He was super confused after episode 6. Half an hour later, he finally had the revelation. It was one of the funniest things ever. He went from dangling mouth to "Holy shit! No way!" to facepalm to shaking his head and clutching his temples. It was worth all those hours of playing for those moments alone.

Technically, the manga is specifically the 'director's cut' of Umineko - it makes things a LOT clearer, especially in the answer arcs, as well as adds a whole new thing outlining stuff directly about what went down. It was specifically meant to be that by Ryu07, so I'd echo in reading the KN first before hitting the manga.

This is exactly what I thought too! Usually manga adaptations of visual novels/games/original anime arent adding much stuff, but I would highly recommend anyone to read it for Umineko. It actually helped me a bit to really briefly recap some plot points from the visual novel

Yeah you can rush through it, but it doesn't change that this 1 story takes 120 hours, you could watch 60 2 hour movies and get 60 full stories in that time. I love Umineko, but it's the kind of thing that takes a LOT of time to get through, I've avoided reading it a 2nd time because the amount of time required is massive.

I first got into Umineko by watching the anime when it was airing. I had loved Higurashi's anime and hadn't even known that the visual novels existed or even really what a visual novel was. After the first season of the Umineko anime finished, I was just so intrigued by it. It wasn't a good anime per say, but it had ideas that were just so interesting. I eventually found out about the visual novels and actually jumped straight to the first answer arc assuming that the anime would have covered the question arcs sufficiently. Boy was I wrong. The whiplash of going from the end of the anime version of the question arcs to the start of the visual novel answer arcs was astounding. But I was immediately blown away by the sheer depth of the story that this version was offering. And I absolutely had to know how the character dynamics could have gotten to this point when the anime gave no indication that this is where things were going. I then marathon-ed the entire series up to the end of episode 6, as it was the latest release, and just about lost my mind with how good it was. The ending of episode 6 in particular was the greatest piece of story telling I had ever seen, and even to this day, after reading a lot more fantastic visual novels and other stories, it still ranks in the top few. Umineko is a series that redefined what good storytelling could be for me. It hit the perfect crossroad of ideas about mystery, logic, fantasy, and romance that I never would have dreamed that I needed that badly. I've definitely strained a few friendships for a time trying to get more people to read it and I'm so glad that this video might do so. Umineko is one of the all time greats. A genuine masterpiece that, while it may have some serious flaws, its high points ring out across the genre and medium to create something truly special.

Reading through Umineko was a journey for me. I was very interested in it because I watched anime for Higurashi back in 2008-2009 and loved its unique story so much I wanted to explore the WTC universe more. Not only that, but both Umineko and Higurashi also allowed me to discover my love for reading.
I was introduced to Umineko by starting with the anime while it was still airing back in 2009. I was not familiar with visual novels at all, so I didn't bother trying to read them for various reasons like those very old character sprites, the amount of reading, and the lack of voice acting. All of the episodes (of the anime, not the VN) used to be on CZcams at that time, so it was easy to access them. After I finished the anime, I was patiently expecting Studio Deen to make an anime adaptation of Umineko Chiru for years, kind of like how they were able to adapt both the Question Arcs and Answer Arcs for Higurashi by making them 2 seasons, the second season being called Higurashi Kai. I was still confused about the story in the anime, but that was supposed to be normal for a WTC story in the first half, and I was extremely eager to know what happens next. The visual novel had only released EP6, which means we needed to wait for EP7 and EP8 to be released so that it's possible to produce the second season. What I didn't expect to happen later on was that the story in the anime was so badly-adapted and unsuccessful that making a second season was no longer possible. Despite that fact, I was still hoping that Umineko would eventually release its second season in at least the next five or six years. However, I began to become increasingly doubtful when Studio Deen released Higurashi Kira in 2011 and Higurashi Kaku Outbreak in 2013. So by around 2014, I finally came to terms that season 2 of Umineko was not gonna be coming, and I could not wait anymore.
And so, starting around 2014, I had made many unsuccessful attempts to go through Umineko by reading the visual novel, that is, I keep putting the series on hold too many times. I'm not much of a fan of visual novels. The only visual novels that I read at that time were Phoenix Wright and Higurashi Hou (that is, just these three arcs: Outbreak, Hinamizawa Bus Stop, and Kamikanshi-hen). But I'm a huge fan of the When They Cry series. It was really hard to press onward with the Umineko visual novel not because of the massive length of the story, but because of how accustomed I was with its anime adaptation of EP1-4 that I felt less motivated to plow through it. However, one thing that still made me keep my interest of the VN for so long was that the more I waited, the more improvements and updates the VN developed. For example, one by one, the VN managed to update its graphics, add voice acting (I was extremely curious about what all the newly-introduced characters voices sound like in Chiru), and add lip movement when the characters are speaking. So throughout this whole time, the VN quality of Umineko greatly improved, the VN had become legally available in Steam, and the Kickstarter for Umineko: Gold Edition is still underway. Also, Umineko has recently been getting more attention now than in the past. That was when I was becoming more and more interested in the series again.
What really made decide to make the time commitment of 100+ hours of reading Umineko was when Ryukishi07 released the first trailer of Ciconia around the end of 2018 and announced that Ciconia will be released in late 2019. After I discovered this, I wanted to finish Umineko before Ciconia is released. And so, I managed to read through all of Umineko from January to August in 2019 twice. The first time, I was reading the visual novel alone for my first exposure and reaction. I used the PS3 sprites with voice acting and mouth movement because it was the closest thing to watching Umineko as an anime. The second time, I was watching Jokrono's LP of the series on CZcams in order to check the small details that I might have overlooked through my first read. Jokrono's Umineko LP is also really funny and thought-provoking at the same time. I was going through the Higurashi visual novel in his Higurashi LP as well, but at a slower pace. Concurrently, I kept a reading log because I learned how long Umineko as a whole was. So I kept track of the time I spent on reading each chapter, then totaling the amount of time read for each episode to find out how much time I spent reading the whole series altogether.
Overall, it took me about 200 hours to read through EP1-8 of Umineko, plus another 200 hours to read through it again. That's 400 hours! And it also took me 10 years since 2009 to finally begin reading Umineko from start to finish. It was strangely a lot easier to read EP1-4 in 2019 because it had been so long since I watched the the anime when it first aired that the story almost felt fresh to me again. However, after reading the first half, I went all ham on the second half because of my extreme enthusiasm after waiting so long to get to that point. I really enjoyed the entire story, and I'm so glad that I finally had the chance to read it. It was as good as Higurashi, or even arguably better because Umineko seem to be the type of story that can never be replicated by anyone in the world without the tremendous amount of time needed to spend. And I didn't think there was any piece of media for me that can surmount Higurashi as my all-time favorite. I find the structure of the WTC to be unique, in which there are the question arcs and the answer arcs. I can also say that Umineko had an impact on my life like Higurashi did, as in changing my viewpoint of the world in a different perspective. Because of these two series, I had become more enthusiastic about reading more books like detective novels and analyzing these books in more depth and insight. I'm still not a fan of visual novels, but I loved Higurashi and Umineko so much that I had become more open-minded about them. Right now, I am still reading the Higurashi console arcs, Higurashi's 8th arc Matsuribayashi-hen, Umineko Tsubasa, and Umineko Hane. And I had just finished reading Phase 1 in Ciconia. If there's one thing I can say with certainty about the WTC series, it's that these stories are like they're wearing a mask. In other words, things are not always what they look like at first. And emphasis on the AT FIRST.

"It's got witches, it's got 5 star writing, it's got a ridiculously good soundtrack."
It also has Erika, who is such a fucking excellent trash gremlin who just steals every scene she's in that she justifies Umineko solely by itself. I love the rest of the VN for sure, but I can't understate how *perfect* she is at just being the worst, especially thanks to Natsuko Kuwatani's performance. What a delightful little meme she is. I mean she's also an excellently written foil for the themes of the story that also manages to be surprisingly humanized to a considerable degree despite being such a disagreeable character. Which I like, that the series is willing to show that even someone who will quite literally spit on the core themes of the story has a valid reason for their perspective, even if that perspective is a cold and loveless one that Ryukishi doesn't agree with.
But *also* she's my garbage wife.
And while reading Higurashi before Umineko isn't strictly necessary, I would say it will more likely than not enhance the experience of playing Umineko, due to certain expectations you may have regarding Ryukishi's writing. I know a few people who were thrown for a loop during the first Tea Party after they had gotten used to the All Cast Review Sessions in Higurashi.

I'm so thankful about seeing this, because Umineko slowly became one of my favourite stories I've ever read. Trying to solve the mysteries was fun, but the heart of Umineko moved me to my very core. I spent about 130 hours on it, including sitting there trying to find anything in the text to help me solve the mysteries haha.
    All in all thank you!

Leaving my comment to go in the pile of people who are thankful that you introduced them to Umineko, I read it a couple months back and absolutely loved it and (almost) everything about it, as well as it being the thing that pushed me into being full-on mystery and detective novel fan from being just someone who read the occasional sherlock holmes story (I'm now a total fangirl) and chapter 8 of Umineko contained some of the most fun I had in 2019. And now, I will read the manga because I was unaware of it existing until this point and I need more Umineko in my life.
Though there is one point in this video I disagree with, the classification of Umineko under the "Horror" genre. My experience with it never really came close to "Horror". While it does get quite descriptively gory at times I wouldn't say it's enough to put it into the Horror genre instead of being the pure (and brillaint) mystery it is
Oh, and because of you informing me of Umineko and me loving it I'm now reading the Higurashi VN, and that's great so far too!

As someone who got in when Arc 7 had just been released and felt an agonizing wait for Arc 8, I'm so glad that this great work has gotten significantly more accessible and has great people like you recommending it and getting the word out there. Umineko still has my favorite soundtrack in a video game, VN or otherwise, and the way it elicits mood, atmosphere, and connection is absolutely second to none and feels less like it's trying to be a great visual novel, and more like it's trying to be a modernization and evolution of the entire mystery novel genre. And that just has me absolutely chomping at the bit, especially when it does the cool thing in Arc 8 with Bernkastel and twists everything it's set up in its coda that just... man, there really isn't an experience like it. I finished this novel some days ago and it was such a overwhelming experience. I was a fan of Higurashi since I am 19 and after watching the anime, I watched the Umineko Adaption and HATED it because I didn't get the message.
Now, 10 years after, I heard about the sequel for Higurashi and I fell in such a hype that I read Higurashi AND Umineko (normally I don't read novels). Hundreds of hours I read these novels with some bonus chapters too and now I am so grateful, that I gave Umineko a second chance. It is such a deep story with a really complex message from Ryukishi and that's why I have to admit, that Umineko is indeed better than Higurashi.

I stumbled upon the anime when it was first airing and didn't know there was a visual novel or a manga related to it at all. My impressions of it were not good. To me, it looked like a typical mystery murder story (in a good way as I was looking for a detective story) but then by episode 4 I knew there was something weird because it had like 20 more episode to burn through and almost everybody was already dead. Then we proceed to restart the story after that but not really because it doesn't look like the same story from another perspective but rather an alternative set of events that happened to have the same cast, making me stop caring about any details I could have hoped to retain to solve any of the mysteries of said first 4 episodes. Then the whole magic vs logic debate felt incredibly stupid to me as the witch already pulled him out to watch the show and discuss it, with now access to info he wouldn't normally have if he hadn't become a part of the audience for these debates. Then other witches start popping up? but I thought the main debate was on questioning if the one we had even was a real witch so don't go around throwing a B plot that seems to already assume she is. It came off as something that wanted to be deep and smart but instead turned out kinda cheap on the writing.
I have a couple friends that are fans of it though, and I've been genuinely confused by that, but that's when I learned there was a visual novel that had "the real deal"... I know them enough to believe the anime adaptation must be at fault here, but at the same time I can't help but think some of my issues with this franchise would still hold up in the seemingly better version.

It's the only novel that changed my life. I couldn't begin to explain the impact this novel had on my life.

Well, regarding the manga, the 8th and final arc is pretty different from the VN version, so I'd recommend checking it out at some point.
The only real problem is that in Umineko, it's crucial to know what _point of view_ we're viewing the scenes from, and the manga doesn't always convey that very well. I don't blame the artists, mind you; Umineko was really written as a VN through and through, so some of its aspects are bound to translate poorly in other formats.
Despite that, I still think the manga is fantastic − and in some parts, honestly better (large chunks of Episode 8, notably).
PS: By the way, Red Bard, did you check out Ciconia no Naku Koro ni?

It actually sucks that this was my first ever Visual Novel series. Not because I didn't like it, in fact I LOVE it to bits, but because its so hard to find something with the same feel as Umineko.
Closest one I could get to it was probably 999/VLR (havent read/played the 3rd one yet)

I really wish Umineko were available on mobile platforms. Reading for that long, it’d be nice to sit in my comfy reading chair with my iPad and experience it that way.

I heard that this is actually possible. I dont know the details but I think there is a way to get a certain VN reader app and then you have to convert your umineko using a program to a compatible version
(but no guarantee, the manga works also when not at home)

It’s at least now avabible on Switch…unfortunately not in English though. I imported the collectors edition and I’m most relying on memory and my limited knowledge of Japanese, although I am enjoying the experience otherwise

Yes, EP8 in the manga was better. In fact, the EP8 in the manga was made also with the intention of solving some problems that the original EP8 had.

How would you compare Umineko to Ryūkishi's other works, especially Higurashi? (In fact, what do you think about Higurashi, Ciconia, etc.? Do they compare well to Umineko in your opinion?)

If Umineko is like reading Homestuck in terms of length giving it a try might be good 'cause reading Homestuck when it was active felt like reading something that was never going to end so mayyyybeeeee I can endure the length of Umineko...🤔
