Hi, you should also mention the Mana series.
You forgot about Suikoden
You missed TWEWY there boy.
Senran kagura
â@cobaltrequiem8980 the video said in the beginning games with only 3 or more entries
Aigis being the picture for etrian odyssey is just funny
đđ that mistake is on me.
â@@TagTheLegendngl man you could've just had a single entry for just atlus lol. They only publish jrpgs to my knowledge. Not many are series but still lol
@@blazingsword2578 >They only publish jrpgs to my knowledge they published so many non rpg games en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Atlus_games
â@TagTheLegend Well Persona Q is basically an Etrian Odyssey game with Persona characters.
@StarDragonJP yeah but it would've been better to use an original character from the series not a character from a different one that has a spinoff
I think it should've also been mentioned that Dragon Quest (1986) came before Final Fantasy (1987). It should also be noted that DQ kickstarted the Turn-based JRPG genre we know today, paving the way for the creation of all the other turn-based console JRPGs that spawned due to it's success (Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star, Mother/EarthBound, and so on).
I think it's fair to say DQ kickstarted not just Turn-based JRPG but JRPG as a whole
For context, and this is something I need to be reminded frequently because I forget, Dragon Quest 3 and Final Fantasy 1 came out around the same time.
I laughed hard at the "Pikachu, Charizard" part lol
No introduction just straight into it. I love it. Very well done video
RIP Akira Toriyama. Too soon :(
Bruh, you all keep hating on the man. He made a very good video as an introduction for new Jrpg players. No vets like you. Some flaws but nicely done man. Hope you achieve the 20k, greetings from Argentina!
"Hating" has come a long way from throwing insults and slurs to pointing out flaws in the most respectful manner lol

Shin megami tensei really deserves more respect guys
Persona coming before SMT in this video was painful, honestly.
Man SMT deserves so much more respect
@@boredgoddesstori6635tbf, Persona is pretty much Atlus flagship series atp.
Good news is with Vengeance on all platforms, it has the opportunity to become much more popular. Plus, it already sold 500,000 copies in first three days which is good. Even Persona used to be niche until Persona 5 came along with 5 million sales. Unfortunately, a lot of people will never like SMT. It's dark, depressing, and often difficult. Those are selling points for me, but not most. Very few people under 30 years old had access to SMT games before Nocturne Remaster (2020) and SMT V (2021) on Switch. Exceptions are 3DS owners, and a few older titles on PS3 and PS Vita
Just let atlus remake the SMT I and make it accesible like SMT V.
its gonna be wild especially with the first minute of the game...
@@boredgoddesstori6635 Persona is a tier above in quality. Persona is ATLUS flagship title.
Yeah Suikoden series feels like a huge omission from this list, otherwise you got most of the popular jrpgs out there.
I think this list is largely comprised of currently ongoing series and to my knowledge Suikoden has been shelved since the mid 2000s.
@@tbnwontpop8857True, but between current development for Konami of the upcoming Suikoden I and II remasters and the recent release of the spiritual successor Eiyuden Chronicle, it remains active and relevant despite the long gap since the last entry. I would have included it - but they definitely got most of the other popular JRPG series with at least three entries.
I should have said it as opposed to putting it in a text bubble but I tried to limit it to active series. I plan to make a follow up targeting retro series.
Department heaven and growlanser next please
Went to watch, scanned the faces, didn't see Suikoden and saw the "advertised title". Immediately dismissed the video and no point watching. Just jumped in to see if anyone else commented on the lack of Suikoden and lo and behold it's at the very top.
You forgot the Mana series? ...
Yup.
@@perlichtman1562 Could be a part 2 of a continuing series of videos? That said, nice simplified breakdown for beginners looking for a quick overview of the individual series. Good job in doing so.
Weird way to spell "Phantasy Star"
They're not JRPGs. No turn-based combat.
â@@azuarc Kingdon Hearts was far from turn based
My fave is the Yakuza series. All game are so funny with the best side quests and a high quality main story
If you made part 2 one day. Donât forget to add Wild arms series đ€
Part 2 is in the works and Iâll 1000% have it there!
For what it's worth, Wild Arms is #58 on Wikipedia's list of Best-selling Eastern RPG franchises. Sales don't mean everything, but there's simply a lot of good JRPG series
Iâd say most Fire Emblem games are not standalone, but most can be played this way. Just do not play (New) Mystery or Radiant Dawn first (and Thracia spoils some of Genealogy).
That Legend of Heroes explanation felt very safe which is fair lmao Iâm surprised the gameplay wasnât mentioned? Not only does the world expand each game, but technology is constantly progressing and this is shown best through the gameplay changes every new game.
FE3 has a retelling of FE1 and is thus an entirely valid starting point(At least if one can swallow the beyond clunky UI experience that it shares with 1 and 2)
Kind of wish you didnât just include Xenoblade. The Franchise started way back with Xenogears in 1998. Then after that we had Xenosaga on the PS2 between 2002-2006.
Also Xenoblade wasnât meant as a Xeno titles originally but later Games leaned more into it.
While all 3 Xeno series are owned by different companies, theyâre still sort of connected and most players consider them as one large Franchise
Also SMT wasnât the first Monster collector and the beginning of the series, it was Atlusâ Megami Tensei on the Famicom (NES) which was based on a trilogy of Novels. SMT released a few years later and then became the cornerstone of the larger Megami Tensei Franchise (the Shin in Shin Megami Tensei literally meaning âTrueâ)
Yeah for this kind of informational video, I agree on the Xeno terminology. At the same time, Xenoblade Chronicles is responsible for about 74% of Xeno series sales and there's been no good Xenosaga games for 20 years. There are simply too many newer 100+ hour JRPGs to play and especially for people under 30 years old, anything older than Xenoblade Chronicles is a hard sell so I can understand not even mentioning it
@@EhurtAfy I mean, Iâm under 30 and played both Xenogears and the Xenosaga Trilogy.
But most casual players probably wonât go the extra mile of emulating or even buying the pre-Blade Xeno Games.
Which is a big reason why I want HD Remasters or Remakes of Xenogears and the Xenosaga Trilogy
@@boredgoddesstori6635 Agreed, yeah that'd be cool đ
Xenogears/saga and blade are not the same franchise, Xenogears was made by Squaresoft, Xenosaga was primairly made by Namco, which is why they own the series to this day, Namco sold monolith to Nintendo where they made a new series using the Xeno-name, they are not connected in any way, other than some money they paid to Namco to use KOS-MOS name and likeness. Basically, they are not a franchise.

The fact that Tales Of, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, and Ys are all on here makes me so happy
I know it's easy to find people online who like these things, but sometimes irl it feels like I'm the only one
The Tales Of series has so much meaning to me, and I feel like it's so underated! This is coming from a person who has beaten five Tales games.

I love this video, as someone who played most of what youÂŽve shown, it is amazing how gave an overview of the games in a detailed yet quick manner and showing the viewers new games they might enjoy!
4:54 The Velvet Room is based on the Cathedral of Shadows from the mainline SMT games, which itself is based on the Heretic Mansion from the first two Megami Tensei games (though the SNES remake of them replaced the demon who ran the mansion with Mido, the minister who runs the cathedral in the numbered SMT games and the first Majin Tensei game). Although SMTV instead has the World of Shadows and Majin Tensei II instead has the REMIX Station.

Do you want bro to spend his entire life editing
His description provides an explanation for his intent and goals in this video (if you wouldve read it). He made a good video summarizing a large chunk of the most popular jrpgs ever made for beginners. If you want a video giving information that anyone could get from a quick google search about games from your list (quite a few of which are more than fairly niche, haven't received a new installment for many newcomers entire lifespans, or never received much critical acclaim in the first place) then make your own video where you won't make abhorrent mistakes like putting a character who appears in a game series in said series' portrait.
You forgot to add "Threads of fate" by square-soft.
Does MMORPG's count as well? If so then get listing you noob
wonderfully explained and consice. great video :)
Ohhhh, tell me how you really feel about Pokemon. đ 10:27
Great video! You did an awesome job detailing the core elements of these great JRPG franchises. đ
Another aspect of the Tales series is how its plots tend to be built around a specific concept, theme, or trope...which the plots then suddenly (and sometimes rather brutally) deconstruct.
The Bravely Series:
Bravely Default
Bravely Second
Bravely Default II
Default 1 and Second are 3Ds games that have 1 story while Default II is on the Switch and is its own self contained story. Their combat system is genuinely incredible with you being able to save and spend multiple turns.
It was also pretty clearly at least part of the inspiration for the battle system in Octopath Traveler.
@@abraveastronaut Definitely and Itâs what made me love the Octopath Traveler games as much as I did.
Nice video! My two favorites are Tales of and Ys!
Greay video! Alot of the info was surface level but these rpgs have so much detail that its hard to fit it all into 15 min lol. For a general idea of them? I thought it was great!
Why is Aigis used as the portait for Etrian Odyssey?
Marketing maybe? The newest origin collection comes with persona characters portraits. Also, there is no single most iconic character in the series anyway, so using Aegis' portrait is a sensible idea to attract more people.
well, they are both owned by Atlus ao why not? Persona also had a sequal game in Etrian odyssey style with PersonaQ.
@@Eclin Because it's not the same game. I wouldn't use a picture of Sora for Final Fantasy.
Thatâs a mistake on my part honestly. Iâll try and be better in the future.
â@@s-wo8781It's not that big of a deal buddy
8:40 well actually.. the travel log you tlak about is also a more modern feature of the Ys series. Infact, it wasn't a thing pre Ys 7 iirc, where the storyline was always revolving around the Eldeen and how they disappeared from the surface, which led Adol ever since the first game around to look to help the people he mets along the way, from simple retrieving of some jewelry, to some flowers up to silver bells or rings and wands that let you transform for example into a Roo for puzzle solving for example (and or worldbuilding) or casting magic that helps Adol on his journey.
As much as I am happy you mention the somewhat known bump combat: I kinda wish you had mentioned the pre team fight oriented hack & slash titles in the series, aka the ark engine or three swords combat titles which are Ys 3's remake, Ys 6 - Ark of Napisthim and Ys Origin, which also appear different to people due to the difficulty being quite higher in compare to what modern Ys games do to the player as modern combat, even on the highest difficulty setting, is either getting oneshotted or wannabe-Dark Souls, sadly (which happened due to the target demographic group being changed as the originally PC focused company Falcom has gone into console game development due to japan's economy not really doing them any favors, see ZWEI2's poor sales for such an astonishing well crafted charming RPG where you also play as two characters basically at once).
Great video. Still, I imagine it's quite difficult to come up with these lists. Many games may be overlooked like DrakeNieR (if you count those games a JRPG), the Mana series, Bravely Default and even forgotten ones like Golden Sun, Wild Arms, Phantasy Star, Summon Night... and the list goes on đ
I know you covered it very shortly in the video but not having a picture for Pokémon in the thumbnail for a JRPG video is crazy
Mother Series is so fucking good, but no one talks about it.
People bring it up all the time. It just has no new entries so it mostly gets brought up in spiritual successor games like Omori.
Im glad atelier was mentioned, but didappointed on how short it was. Good vid.
Nice video but you got your chart wrong at Tales. Tales of Symphonia 2 is not a mainline title but Tales of Innocence is.
Great video, bro! As a passerby in the genre, this get me excited to get to these.
If you do a part 2, i would recommend the Like a Dragon Series being included.
Great summary. Theres so many awesome JRPG franchises going strong nowadays.
wow - ya done it, you created the video my subconscious has been longing for this whole time
REAN BEAN HAS BEEN SEEN.

Another reoccuring thing in Dragon Quest is the Slime, the most important creature in Dragon Quest history.
I'm just happy that SaGa was included!

Aigis is my favorite Yggdroid.
Okay what are your thoughts on monster hunter and God Eater?
Also my favs are Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Tales of, Persona, SMT, Kingdom Hearts, Ys, Atelier, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade Chronicles, Eterian Odyssey, Valkyria Chronicles and pokemon.
Here's a series of vaguely connected games called the Department haven series
With four games in total it would really benefit from a video like this since it's very niche even by JRPGs standard
Those titles are quite unique and very hard compared to genre contemporary my favourite game is
Knights in the nightmare
I'm certain you won't find something like it
That's the series Rivera the Promised Land is part of, right? That final boss theme rocks!
All the games have banger music
Knights in the nightmare is my favourite
Sorry for the late response hope you read it it's not every day I come across a fan of department heaven fan
Thanks for making me discover those titles!
Ys, Legend of Heroes and tales of series are beyond amazing
Love these series keep it up
Not a single image of the Famicom version of all those games ?
Awwwwwwww, it's so satisfying to see them be more and more beautiful as the script is told.
dude i wish i had found your channel earlier, this shit hits
Don't forget Koudelka/Shadow hearts if theres a part 2
I'm always pleasantly surprised when Etrian Odyssey gets a mention.
Underrated channel!
While talking about Star Ocean, you could have also mentioned at the end of that segment that that series is actually connected, or was connected rather, to the Tales of Franchise due to Wolf team first working on ToP, getting disrupted by Namco and then leaving nearly completly with the whole team to create Tri-Ace with Enix (I might be wrong thereif Tri-Ace was created after but it's been a bit messy there) as a publisher so the reason why there are some similiar beats and themes and say cooking and other specifics that are usually very unusual in the RPG genre come up, then it is because of their relationship to the Tales of Franchise in the 90s.
I really wish Disgaea spin-off games had their own category. They take on completely differently art styles yet love to reference the Disgaea series or even straight up have Crossover characters from the Disgaea series enter their games. Youâll definitely find some underrated gems like Phantom Brave, Soul Nomad, Phantom kingdom, The witch and the hundred knight, etc
Good video but it would have been nice if you recommended a game from each series for beginners
Damn that would have been a good idea. I May double back and do that in a separate video
Final Fantasy IV (GBA or PSP versions) is a great RPG to start with for beginners. I recommend that over basically anything else. You can easily emulate it on a smartphone or PC.
for Ys i recommend Ys 8
considered the best by many fans
fire emblem i recommend three houses
xenoblade i recommend 1 or 3
i petsonally started with 2 but its controversial
nier i recommend automata
smt nocturne or 5 vengeance
kingdom hearts kh 1, 2 is considered the best but they all are connected so u need to know previous games
persona i recommend 5 royale
I think we could've done with persona being under the SMT umbrella and replacing it with, say, the shadowhearts series (+koudelka).
Absolutely beautiful crafted JRPG list. Good video
This was a great video- nice to get a brief explanation on some series I havenât tried yet. PokĂ©mon cracked me up đ
I wasn't expecting it to be brought up since it's pretty obscure in the US, but Super Robot Wars is a long running SRPG franchise like Fire Emblem. SRW features various mecha series in each game and has them cross over with each other with some original characters to create a new story. The most recent mainline release, 30, was released on Steam, and it alongside V, X, and T were also released on PS4 and Switch in Asia, but they all have official English translations.
Octopath traveler and Nier feels like it should've been mentioned.
Barely a franchise rn
@@SpiredRapidity I know, but it's super influential for the current JRPG landscape. I mean just look at the new Dragon Quest Erdrick trilogy remakes. Live A Live, Eiyuden Chronicles 100 Heroes and some others also use this artstyle. Also, another omission could be Nier. Considering Valkyria Chronicles was on this list, Octopath and Nier should get a pass, since Valkyria is good, but is super niche compared to some of the others in the list.
@@zomorion9183 bad influential. I don't want all RPG to have samey octopath sty;e
@@si-level That's not the popular opinion for one thing.
And I didn't say it was good or bad, for a second thing.
And third, having a consistent artstyle across multiple games for a series of games that come out of certain devs/publishers help them distinguish themselves from similar titles. Look at Fromsoft for example, the graphical fidelity and quality has changed drastically over the years, but from Dark Souls 1 all the way to Elden Ring, the art style is relatively similar. Even in Bloodborne or Sekiro. Vastly different atmosphere for sure, but the style of art is similar. You can verify this comparing Bloodborne armor sets to those in Elden Ring and comparing enemies from Sekiro to Elden Ring for example. And you know what? It works. Until Lies of P, it helped distinguish Fromsoft games from every other soulslike game. This Octopath artstyle could essentially just be Square Enix's new thing, where it helps it distinguish it from every other JRPG and, as someone with a lot of nostalgia for 2D games and gorgeous artstyles, I personally love this direction. But I definitely see where you're coming from, and there definitely does need to be huge differences in the overall atmosphere for these games, like how Fromsoft does it, so it doesn't get AS repetitive. Octopath has a very distinct darkness/desaturation in it overall artstyle, conveying a distinctly dark atmosphere, but in the case of games like Live A Live and Dragon Quest, which have more colorful atmospheres, yeah, it feels like it hurts the uniqueness more than it helps. Eiyuden's artstyle is way more different in retrospect and it's also not Square Enix, so it's fine, but it's artstyle definitely has signs of being inspired by Octopath.
Also FF7 remake exists and proves that experimentation and evolution in artstyle isn't going out of the window either, so there's that.
@@zomorion9183 Valkyria chronicles has 4 mainline games and 1 spinoff. Octopath has 2 mainline and 1 mobile spinoff. I think the minimum number of mainline game to be called a series is 3 to form a trilogy.
Awesome video man I love it
It's a great work. Thank you for editing this for a wider audience to learn about these great series.
My favorite one is Shin Megami Tensei, III and V don't show this element that much but technology meeting the occult is one its core elements making it a very unique cyberpunk mythological esoterical monster-collecting series.
I still have to play some of these franchises tho.
Great video, just one correction on Valkyria: You don't play as the Gallian Militia in every game. In Valkyria 2 you take control of students a Military Academy, Valkyria 3 you play as an offshoot unit consisting of convicts and undesirables to take on seemingly impossible missions and in Valkyria 4 you play as the Federation during Operation Northern Cross
Loved the video!
What is persona Q aigis doing in etrian odyssey??
The Mana series is fairly obscure with a cult following. It started as an action based Final Fantasy like before it transitioned into its new identity. All games have a plot surrounding a limited supply of mana, a tree that supplies the mana, a sword that acts as the conduit, someone dying by the end, usually a girl as a sacrificial offering, monsters that look cuddlier than basic Kirby enemies, and later on up to eight elements including the obscure moon and wood ones. Some earlier games featured local multi-player, spinoffs were hit-or-miss experimental variations of the usual formula, and the music is usually good on the ears overall. When Secret of Mana was being made, limited cart space led to alot of stuff being cut and pit into either the sequel or Chrono Trigger.
I enjoyed this, and it helped me answer a question my wife has been bugging me about as to why I like these type of games. I did feel you left out a few titles that should have been mentioned and they are frequently mentioned in other comments, but one I was surprised I didn't see was .Hack, and it bugged me a bit that you mentioned Xenogears but not Xenosaga.
Wow finally someone who doesnât just boil down smt into âitâs really hardâ THANK YOU
You forgot to say that xenoblade has born from the team behind of the Xenogears and Xenosaga games. It is a good trivia for players that want to experience more of the series :D
This was a good video
Great vid
If you're making an update, please include Breath of Fire.
And Mana, with SaGa, after FF, after you place it after DQ. And SMT before Persona. There's good discourse with Bravely and Octopath.
Disgaea 5 is still one of my favorite games.
Need a part two of this to include Grandia.
If there is a part 2 I'm hoping Super Robot Wars/Taisen gets an honourable mention. At 30 years old and dozens of games it's a Mecha fan's dream franchise.
Makes me sad that the Shadow Hearts franchise died out. Still dream of a return.
Legend of Heroes Trails series is probably one of the only two (correct me if I'm wrong) series that is still running and continuing besides from Kingdom Hearts.
A very long series to get into if you want to understand the whole story of different characters/perspective/continents in the same world. Like a really long anime with 500+ episodes that is still going and going and going. Iirc, the current installment (12th installments) just hits the 50% of the overall story, according to the game designer.
And your breakdown of it was so... short and somehow precise đ It's my favorite series though.
I want to see .hack series!
thanks for the video
In your Persona section, you may have forgotten to mention that 3, 4, 5 play differently than Persona 1 and the duology of Persona 2, otherwise its a great video. I would love to see another one of these.

The ones i played a bit but didn't finish the game was Dragon Quest 6, old Shin Megami Tensei even thou i finish a tactics one in DS, Xenoblade, Ys, Atelier and Saga i never touched any games in these sagas.

Fuck this video made me realize how many video games ive played over the years.
That about atelier was funny lol
13:20 You aren't completly wrong there. Tho one has to say that it's inspiration is not D&D as it was for DQ & FF iirc but it was Wizardry, another older Pen & Paper Boardgame social activity game. Also also the SaGa series does have some storyfocus or more character focus, it jsut varies heavily on the SaGa game one is playing and on what story someone is playing in that game. It's like picking Lute's or Blue's story in SaGa Frontier and then picking Asellus or T260G their stories and noticing how much more emotional scenes appear in those stories then in whatever was done for Lute or Blue, with Blue's story making more sense due to the remastered content of Fuse's Investigation Case or whatever it was called again. Otherwise I'm thankful for talking bout that series, tho I don't get why you picked some 144p video material for the Romancing SaGa 2 remake announcement that came out some days ago.
there's still a few series missing but overall a decent effort.
Where are Suikoden, Shadow Hearts, Wild Arms and etc. đą
They were all on going franchises whereas those are dead franchises
@@myboy732I could see that argument for the others but Konami currently has Suikoden I and II remasters in development.
@@perlichtman1562 yeah but there's still no new games being developed for the series.
@@perlichtman1562 that's still not a new game.
@@myboy732 Then the title is misleading.
While it probably doesn't fit the same mold as a JRPG, I think the Yakuza series would be a really good addition for a part 2 or something
You've mentioned Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Etrian Odyssey, but you never knew that Wizardry was actually a grandfather to RPGs genre which came during early 80s.
Also, Etrian Odyssey was inspired by Wizardry, and Atlus before went made BUSIN / Tale of the Forsaken Land.
While Xenoblade entries are *technically* standalones, if anyone is considering checking them out, definitely hit the whole 1-3 trilogy for the full context and payoff
Skipping the Pokemon explanation entirely goes to show which one is the most popular JRPG of all time
