  • The 1992 movie Batman Returns had a lot of different video games released for it -- around 10, ranging from a great SNES beat 'em up by Konami to a PC adventure game, a middling Mega Drive platformer, a great Mega CD driving game and many more. Let's have a big look at them all! Enjoy.

The Atari Lynx version! My god I could only get as far as the first boss and the beginning of level 2. If I remember correctly it's the police with guns on that level. You were right, the only way to get anywhere was to run past mostly everything.

I owned a couple of these. The Master System one and the Mega Drive one.
I picked them up cheap from Cash Convertors.
I was just happy to be Batman in a game and smash stuff.
Back in the day, you just played a game and were grateful to have it.
It was hard, ridiculously hard. Ultimately, it makes you a better gamer.
I remember when games first started to have save points. Felt like cheating.
The Arkham games challenge you though.
Especially the Requiem for a Killer achievement.
As an adult, I understand the critique of the games. They are hard or limited.
It's just the way it was back then. Even the Konami one has its flaws.
I even got Batman Forever later. That's regarded as a complete dumpster fire.
Looking back, I see it. At the time? Didn't care. Was Batman and Robin.
It's different now, because these companies are loaded and have ten times the employees.
They also charge a tonne. You basically pay for a game x2, including season passes.
I got Batman Returns for £2.99.

Batman: The Movie on the Amiga was my favourite Batman game. Only had 5 levels but they were varied, from memory 2 platforming levels, 2 driving levels (one in Batmobile, one in the Bataero) and one strange chemistry level.
The swinging mechanic was extremely satisfying, vaguely Bionic Commando-ish, and I loved the games final act in Gotham Cathedral where you fling your bat rope (or whatever it was called) at the Joker as he’s climbing a ladder to escape on the roof. He proceeds to fall off it and plummet to his doom, Hans Gruber style. I must have replayed it start to finish dozens of times.
I think it was used as a pack in game to sell Amiga 500s at one point. I had an Amiga 1000 with 2mb of RAM, it was a beast, ha!

Batman Returns driving sequences on Sega/Mega-CD were by John/Jon O'Brien (aka Jobbee), who also did (most famously) Chase HQ on ZX Spectrum + Amstrad CPC, as well as WEC Le Mans 24 on Amstrad CPC, Burnin' Rubber on Amstrad GX4000 and even contributed to Grand Prix Legends! Something of a racing game expert of the time.
He also worked on The Adventures of Batman & Robin on Sega/Mega-CD, which featured 3D driving (though much less known than Batman Returns), and Batman on the Amiga + Atari ST (which also featured a driving sequence).
He also worked on Cliffhanger on the Sega/Mega-CD, which featured a snowboarding "racing" sequence.

I really like how the SNES game did as much as it could to stay as true to the movie as possible; many of the bosses, and even most of the MOOKS are taken directly from characters in the movie, some of which even use attacks they had in the movie (I'm pretty certain that the bomb-throwing Thin Clown is indeed the one that Batman takes the bomb from in the film). Hell, you can even replicate the "use your grappling hook to pull a piece of concrete into the Stungun Clown's head" trick at the end of the first stage, though unlike the movie it won't take him down instantly (though it still does a TON of damage). Fun little details all around on top of just being a DAMN fine brawler. :3

This was a wonderful video. I was always a huge fan of the SNES and Game Gear games in my youth - and an anti-fan of the Mega Drive/Genesis mess. Always pleasant when your opinions are mirrored by someone who can argue the case so well.
Honestly, I love the entire concept of exploring every single game based on a single title - and man, ‘91-‘93 were really the heyday for this phenomenon. The Addams Family movie and Terminator 2 each got at least 6 distinct base games if we’re counting handheld LCD titles. Darkman, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Alien 3 and freakin’ Hook each received 5 base titles to their names. And by now most people know that Jurassic Park got SO MANY - I count nine direct tie-ins to the movie, with four separate games published by Sega alone! And frankly, EVERY Sega version has merit to it.

I have excellent memories of Batman Returns on the Master Sys. As a kid I had it day 1 and enjoyed every bit of it it was better than Spiderman on the Master Sys (another good game). Master Sys is the most underrated retro console ever, even in it's day in UK it was still uncommon. NewZealand Story, Chase HQ, Jungle Book, R-Type, Summer Games, Aerial Assault, Terminator, Asterix , James Pond 2, Mickey Mouse games(better than the MD) and Alex Kidd were awesome.

The ultimate 16-bit Batman Returns game: Mix the beat-em-up levels from the SNES, with the driving levels from the Sega CD. That would be amazing. Not quite as amazing as the Arkham series, but that wasn't possible for several more hardware generations, and this would be the best you could do on 16-bit hardware.

The most annoying 'low on energy' alert has to be in NMK's GunNail arcade game. If you're playing casually it's innocuous enough, even if it makes you want to just kill off your ship at that point. If you're playing for score however, it's obnoxious, as you score more points when you have no shields left, but that also coincides with the alert sound.

Mega Drive Batman Returns I've always found to be pretty average, but I feel doesn't deserve the hate it gets. The music is actually pretty good on some levels and the gameplay is fun once you get the hang of it. The hit detection is poor though, and the gameplay can be frustrating especially in the latter stages. But it's not a bad licensed game.

Master System Batman Returns was the very first console game I ever played. Speccy 89 Batman was the first game ever. Amiga Returns is possibly the worst Amiga game I played at the time

Great video Kim, I would just say - The Game Gear version did come out in the UK. I owned it as a kid.

I think it’s much preferable to the Master System version because the Game Gear game gives Batman A LIFE BAR. He can take MULTIPLE HITS. Feels so wrong for friggin’ Batman of all people to go down in a single hit like a chump.

26:30 that is strange, since I own a Batman Returns cartridge for the GameGear for years, and certainly haven't imported it from the US.
Also, Segaretro lists an european packaging.

I had the SNES & the Tiger electronics games. The Tiger one...was better than most of the other Tiger games I had? And I had about 10.
