  • In this video I experiment with using capacitors with the piezoelectric pickups in a cigar box guitar. I mention common cap values for tone controls and explain I am making a permanent tone control. I install the capacitor and play the guitar. What did I think, I'm not shy about it. Thanks for watching WoodPortGuitars. Don't forget to like, comment, subscribe and ring the notification bell so you know when a new video comes out. Until next time, Have fun.

    I really learned something today, from watching this video.

    12:29 .... another way to describe a piezo is it's microphonic, it turns your cbg into a microphone hence the easy feedback squealing especially when played near the amp.... I've used bar piezos under the lid under the bridge position and it seems to cut the feedback a bit. Using an onboard 3 channel preamp helps even more...
    14:20 ... Del Puckett yells into the soundholes on his and you can hear him from the amp! 😄 It's a microphone!!

      A microphone using a piezo is coming, seen Adam from The Cigar Box Guitar Builder channel and he mentioned a mic that was in Shane Speal's book, so yea, I'll have to try that also. The guitar in this video was The second of two identical builds, on purpose for comparison, the first of the twins has a rod piezo and 5 band eq/preamp and a flat wound humbucker. If you are an entertainer, get payed to play, then I would say the eq/preamp is a must. Just for having fun, I reckon a piezo is just right. But I'm done experimenting yet! Thanks for watching, and thanks for the comments, I love it. Cheers.

    5:05 ❤😂😅 hope you figure a way to do that under pressure foot white side up.
    Eq though is so important. I didnt know you could make a permanent tone control connecting each leg to input jack. Thanks for a great video.By the way yoyr playing and INTONATION are great also...

    Cool video! Not a cbg player but have played around with piezos over the years. You can get piezos with different resonant peaks so there's added scope for experimentation there

      Thanks and Thanks for Watching! I have been doing a lot reading up on piezos and just started to come across resonant peaks, interesting. I should dig deeper into the actual piezos before getting to far into the buffer and preamp circuits. Those are a rabbit hole of their own. Thanks for the 'directional nudge'.

      @@WoodPortGuitars You're very welcome dude! It is indeed a rabbit hole all of it's own, playing around with various cap values and piezo peaks before it even hits the amp....
      You should make a video(s) about it!

    Cool! Use a Noisegate on your pedalboard, or most modeling amps have them.... that will solve your feedback issues.

    Not like I really need another item on my, "1001 things I want to build and/or create" but I really really wanna make somethingblike these, probably an acoustic version to start out though.

      Do it! Gather your materials, make your plan, take your time and build it. It could last you a lifetime and they can be so much fun! My first build was and is an acoustic cigar box guitar, always will be, I love it. Besides, you can always add a piezo pickup or magnetic pickup later down the road.

    Thanks for the video Bill. Definitely going to use a capacitor going forward. Im building my first resonator and I’m not sure whether I should glue the piezo to the bottom of the paint can lid or the neck. What’s your method? Have you tried any of the flat pickups under the hood instead of a piezo yet? Im curious about those.

    • @WoodPortGuitars
      @WoodPortGuitars  Před 8 měsíci

      Thank you for watching! Please keep us posted on your experiences using the capacitor. My thinking is to glue the piezo on the bottom of the paint can lid since that is where the resonator sound comes from. Yes I have used a MGB Lucky 13 flat pickup under the hood or ghosted on Twin 1 in the video Cigar Box Guitar gets Electrified. I do like them and will be using more in future builds. Cheers

    Hey, the first vod of yours i saw was the one where youre planning on mak8ng an electric from a shiny black-topped cigar box I have a question, in the vod you mention that the walls of that boxvwould not make a very good acoustic and thats why you decided to do a plugged version I was just wondering, what is an ideal size range for good acoustic sounds from these kickass little projects?

    • @WoodPortGuitars
      @WoodPortGuitars  Před 8 měsíci

      My reference is my acoustic guitar, they are made of some thin wood, you want it to move, vibrate and resonate to project the sound. The top on my acoustic is 3.3 mm thick or 0.13 inch thick. That is pretty thin. Most boxes I find are a 1/4 inch or thinner, about 6 mm or thinner. To me, if the box walls and especially the top is thicker than 1/4 inch, I am not going to get the vibration and resonance I want in an acoustic cbg. The box in the video has walls and a top that are 3/8 inch or 10 mm. You could do an acoustic with it, I would be interested in what that would sound like, I just keep thinking about acoustic guitars and how thin the wood is they are made from. That is my guide when I'm looking at boxes. Experimentation is a big part of Cigar Box Guitars and DIY, no rules!

    Have you tried using a epoxy type adhesive on the piezo center and glueing it to the box in the appropriate place ?

    • @WoodPortGuitars

      No, I haven't yet. I like the idea of no heat from a hot glue gun. I will have to give it a try. Thanks and Thanks for Watching!

    The source impedance of a piezo pickup is entirely different from that of a regular magnetic guitar pickup, so the capacitor does not function like it would do in a regular guitar tone control.

    • @WoodPortGuitars
      @WoodPortGuitars  Před 8 měsíci

      Thanks for the info. I haven't seen impedance numbers, but they are two totally different beasts. I was recreating something I had seen in a different video, and although it helped, I wanted more, which has led me down a different path. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Cheers.

    The issue with doing things this way is that it will sound different plugged into different amps.

    • @WoodPortGuitars
      @WoodPortGuitars  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thanks for Watching! I haven't found it to have an adverse affect with any of the different amps I have played this cbg through. In the video you can hear it through the Marshall practice amp, and later in the video, 8:00 to 9:30 you can hear it through an Avid Eleven Rack, where I played through a few presets, and in Cigar Box Guitar Shaping The Neck with Hand Tools and Amp Preview Video, at 8:30 you can hear it through a home built 9 volt powered amp. I like it in all three different amps, I am really impressed with some of the sounds I can get from the 11 Rack. I would never do this capacitor mod to a wire wound magnetic pickup that you find in a 6 string electric guitar. No need. It is only done to tame the highs of the piezo pickup. Cheers
