I had the original C64 Version as a teenager and always liked it. I just found the Amiga WHD-Load version and must say it's really nice and stable - I like it even more than the good ms-dos version. As the game takes quite some time and isn't easy, I'm currently in the process of writing a character/savegame editor (Amiga). If you use it with care (only small changes) it can reduce your parties training time in/for the dungeons and still prevail and enhance the fun. I just finished The Tombs and Fanskars Castle and move on to Dargoths Tower to snatch segment 3 of 7... Thanks for the nice video.

There's an interesting video with the developer of the series on youtube now. Search for "GDC 2018: Classic Game Postmortem: 'The Bard's Tale I and II'".

The "color scheme" is called EGA, which was common at the time. It supported 16 colors, but had a much worse palette than the Atari ST or the Amiga (no caucasian skin tone, for instance). Unfortunately, none of the PC Bard's Tales support more than EGA, so, if you want better colors, you have to go for the Amiga or Apple IIGS (not Apple II!) versions.

our copy had a bug where the level up guy would sometimes ask "what is in the middle of the map" we had the maps but no answer ever satisfied him

Me and my bro would play this game for hours sometimes in frustration..also on our pc we would hit the Z key and a free golem character would join your team

We had a copy but somehow e never knew we were supposed to "beat" dungeons we just wandered and left. My dad hacked the software so our characters were uber powerful and had unlimited funds but we never made any real progress. We never figured out "tell me two things to split the rock"-- I probably put hundreds of hours into this game before I turned ten

If you want to play BT 1 or 2, it's best to emulate the Apple 2gs or Amiga versions. The DOS version looks bad in comparison

I understand, its just a thought I had because many people use the word "replayability" meaning how much they like to replay a game. But thats not what it was originally intended for, that word was invented for gaming magazines to say how different the game is each time you play it.Strategy games usually have the highest replayability. Almost everything about them is different each time. How much do you get for your money not how much I personally like it.

Those timed special rooms were a neat idea. There was no pausing once you entered one of them and were trying to get a segment of The Destiny Wand. I died many times in those snares. I would always save right before entering though.

The level limitation for certain races are from the rules for AD&D 2nd Edition. It wasn't a limitation because of the game designers. I guess a lot of people that played the computer games never actually played Dungeons and Dragons so they wouldn't be aware of this.

Yes, this review should be watched after the review of Bard's Tale 1. I mentioned that in the beginning of the review commentary, but would probably be useful to point it out in the description as well. I'll update it.

Never played Bards Tale, played all Gold Box and Might and Magic games, right up my alley.Personally I wouldn’t say changing your party members would make me play it more.I could never willingly part with my original party.I was so pissed finding out in Pools Of Darkness non human characters couldn’t train above a certain level. All SSI games had that, being the 4th game in the line it’s the only time you came across it.I had to get rid off half my party that had been there since Pools of Radiance!

Excellent review. I enjoyed the entire series of The Bard's Tale on the Commodore Amiga which had wonderful graphics and sound. I think Part Three was my favorite of the series but they were all great as were most of the quest or RPG games that came out from 1983 through 1993.

GOG has the Apple//GS version in emulation mode. You have to buy the parody game. Once you buy the parody game (which is quite sarcastic and includes singing drunks and an Oompa Loompa parody.) The Apple//GS of 1 and 2 and the //e version of 3 are bundled in complete with an emulator for them.
It does not come with the DOS version, though.

Even though the quests do not change in the game, it is so difficult and "mind intensive" with riddles, it is replayable. But I was talking about me personally. When I rate a game, it's based on my personal view of the game, not anyone else's. That's why I gave Commander Keen a D even though many people like it.

Nice review, but a thought on “replayability”.While I would say this offers some with party members etc. I wouldn’t call it good replayability.A simple term, how different is a game each time you play it.Not how much do you personally like to replay it.Civilization- Always different.Doesent make that my favorite game.WingCommander which has little replayabilty is my favorite. But despite combat being different, goals are the same as is story,so little replayability despite me playing once a year.

Always enjoy your reviews, including games like this which I gave up on. I had the C64 buggy version

  • @dfortaeGameReviews

Yes, it was extremely difficult! And we had to do it without help from the Internet. Kids today are spoiled with having information at their fingertips. We had to do it the hard way back then... I still try to play games like that today, but it's just so tempting to do a quick look on the Internet.

Interesting that the NES/Famicom version never came out in the west for some reason... which is too bad, since the soundtrack is obviously way, way superior in that version. Perhaps it will get an unofficial patch one of these days.

Sometimes I'm amazed at how much that word gets thrown around out of its original meaning. Some people will say a game like Mario has A+ replayablility and I just laugh. It has no replayability.I love that game but its always the same. Its never different. A game you play over and over may only give someone else 1 go through.Replayability is meant to say theres great potential for everyone to replay this game.
I know what you meant but thats just a pet peeve word of mine.I do love your channel!

Of course, computer nerds don't have friends to play real D&D with! haha. Still, that was a huge blow to someone that had been playing since the 1st game only to find out half there characters are useless in the 4th. Now when I play those games I just use humans unless muli class, and that screws with the role playing element. They should have stretched the rules for that game.
