    I know it has a reputation for being extremely difficult to work with, but do you have any experience with Desert Ironwood? It looks absolutely gorgeous. I have not seen any applications of it as a tonewood but I have seen it in use as a top on an electric guitar by Barlow guitars.

      I’d actually be really interested in tinting it trans black. However, If a customer wanted to spend that kind of money just to spray it totally black I think I’d find their act of rebellion endearing.

      @@TomSandsGuitars Maybe just a personal opinion. Taylor guitars are too bright for me and Gibson are best for Cat Stevens and Everly Brothers. Martin are mostly favoured maybe because they sound somewhat dry.
      Guitars that ring out like yours are favoured by classical players, I suppose.

    At the time of the shooting of this video, guitar manufacturers are changing their approach to guitar sales from the last few decades whereby they marketed all laminate guitars as if they were equal to solid wood guitars. The prices were low at the laminate end of the spectrum and went upwards from there with the advertising failing to mention that the budget models were not equal to their highest quality guitars. Today we are seeing a switch to solid top guitars and laminate back n sides. The tone improvements are nought to sneeze at and the prices remained stable. In any case I wonder how much of a difference you would expect in the tone quality of the guitars you build if you made the back n sides with laminates of the same mahogany you’re highlighting here? Takamine has long been building using laminates even on their higher end models. Recently I saw one on their website using a solid back and laminate sides and, of course, solid top. They claim that they are much more stable in their lives. How much can be said about the difference in tone between laminated high grade woods and the same wood from the same tree, only solid?

    • @TomSandsGuitars
      @TomSandsGuitars  Před 9 měsíci +1

      It might surprise you to know that I’ve always built with laminated sides for structural reasons. I’ve experimented with laminated backs but in my experience it limits what you can do from a voicing point of view, ie you can’t really remove material from the face of the back or selectively thickness it (due to it being so thin) to encourage particular vibrational modes. I’ve also found that a laminated back ends up being really quite heavy which is fine as long as you don’t expect the back to be an active vibrating membrane. That being said, many of my colleagues use laminated backs to great effect, check out Dion Guitars in Canada. 🙏
