Scottish fishing industry faces crisis over EU shipping delays

  • The Scottish food exporting industry was promised friction-free access to European markets after Brexit.
    Its most valuable export, shellfish, goes almost entirely to France, Spain and the Netherlands.
    But mistakes, poor direction and last-minute regulations have all contributed to problems, leaving shellfish rotting in their containers.
    Al Jazeera’s Jonah Hull reports from Glasgow, Scotland.

    If there were major border delays then why were the fish sellers not quicker on their feet and contact distributors in the UK and sell it a lot cheaper to stores and that reduction could have been passed on to consumers. Are the langoustines not transported in refrigerated trucks?
    Why bin it or left to rot?
    If they are not delivered,why don't the supplier boil it and packaged it and sell it to super markets locally.
    If prices are plummeting the locals can afford to savour the langoustines.
    It's no science fiction.
    It's common sense.🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐

    • @mimovil8730
      @mimovil8730 Před 3 lety +4

      Langoustines/crayfish have very delicate meat and they lose quality really fast if they are not eaten within a few hours after being caught. If you know your seafood, you can really tell whether what you are getting is fresh or not. That, of course, affects the taste/quality (and therefore, the price). If the delays mentioned here are substantial enough, the product can no longer be consumed safely. The crayfish start decomposing and the meat goes off. If they start to smell like ammonia, there's nothing else that you can do other than throw them away. Seafood which has gone off can be particularly toxic (I'd rather eat a rotten tomato than a rotten crayfish) and so, retailers must be very careful about this question too.
      As far as the question of demand and supply goes, the UK market alone cannot make up for these huge economic losses. If the price drops dramatically, then the sustainability of these businesses will certainly be compromised. Layoffs and bankruptcy for many will be inevitable.
      An alternative would be to freeze them. The quality would still be pretty good, although not as good. That would affect the price that these crayfish can be sold for... but then, you would not have to worry so much about delays.

    • @skylib2452
      @skylib2452 Před 3 lety +7

      Errr, why dont you learn about food safety (especially the seafood chapter) before your "common sense " poisons hundreds of people ? On top of that, brits do not eat shellfish, not because of price, but because they dont like it... why do you think these langoustines were all exported in the first place ?

    • @brightsparking
      @brightsparking Před 3 lety +4

      They are transported to market live, if they don't reach the destination within 2 days they are not considered fresh and the value drops by at least 50%. Customers want the freshest produce and that earns the premium price and supports the industry.
