That IS the best they can do these days, unfortunately- following all the latest standards and diktats. When I lived in Essex, my local line the Southminster branch was electrified quickly, cheaper, and with much slimmer masts that were almost invisible when compared with today's structures. But that was done by British Rail, who apparently (according to the London government) were so bad that they had to be privatised- and the rest is history, including the increased costs and poor service. This is my comment from a Welsh ex-pat who despairs of what has happened to the land of my birth. Good job you didn't mention 20mph speed limits. Rant ends.
