No one is ever ready for death. Least of all Babymetal Death. As crazy as that was would you believe they came up with a harder version of that song for their 10-year anniversary. Called the Shin Death version. during this performance did you notice they still had their kawaii moments. Yui and Moa giggle while putting the neck brace on Su. How Su didn't break character only goes to show what a professional she is. Also, Moa had to fix Su's hair because you have to look good while on the cross. Sometime after this performance Su mentioned that the fire felt a little too close. And ever since then their use of pyro has moved further and further away. Smart move. This whole concert was a rock opera telling a story from start to finish. Starting with them in Jpop hell and then rising to metal heaven. Babymetal sees things differently. They are the juxtaposition in the metal universe. Made a few metal elitist mad over the years. Babymetal is the happiest place in metal. And yes, you can be happy go lucky while listening to metal. Babymetal proved it. One other thing you should listen to is the words of Su-metal as she paraphrased it. "Don't Think, Feel". Enjoy the music and enjoy the performance be in the moment. Let them take you on a journey with a mint flavored time machine as only Babymetal can. Try Awadama Fever by them Next. The Foxhole is deep and full of surprises.

That is a pretty metal elitist interpretation. Babymetal never said any of those things. There is some good Jpop. Yoasobi performed with Babymetal at the Bring Me Horizon fest in Japan. They're Jpop. Babymetal's best songwriter is a Vocaloid producer.
What the intro to the song just talks about the Chosen One being Reborn as a Goddess.

This is another song they brought back to live concerts in this World Tour 2023 as an opener after 2017 (when YuiMetal was still in the group) and fans are really glad with this come back, although here they're using as an ender as part of this special event.
Song is heavy but wait until you hear Babymetal Death Shin Ver. from Budokan 2021 or "Sis Anger" to decide which one is heavier. You can find the kamishibai (narrated intro) translated in the description box if you're watching GuilhermeCait clip.
If you're a Metallica fan you can spot the beggining riffs of _"One"_ song, as well of the -"virgen mary"- image behind (it's not, it's SuMetal resembles and Lady Justice Metallica tribute, even statue crumbling down is an homage) they're truly BM sensei and they support the group too. Our girls said this is one of the most physical demanding song, and you can see the reason why, they normally used this song as an opener and a way to warm up for next performances, in this rare exception this was at the end of the show, an epic finale.
This was during SuMetal 16th birthday, the same place you probably saw at Gimme Chocolate!! MV and she was sacrificed as a j-pop idol and reborn as a metal goddess queen, the Fox God has bless all of us. -NotACult- 👀
The neckbrace is part of BM lore and you can see it first during Headbanger!! official MV, Yoshiki (pianist and drummer on X-Japan) suffer serious injuries during a live concert while headbanging so hard (this was way back before BabyMetal was even created), after that he needs to use neckbrace to avoid doing that movement, he still playing and being active, he's a living legend.
They are singing their names as a way to introduce themselves in japanese way but with the pun intended play of words: "SuMetal desu" means "I'm SuMetal" but she is trying to say "SuMetal death", same for the rest of girls with their respective names, and the rest of the song is:
      "B - A - B -Y - M - E - T - A - L DEATH! DEATH! DEATH! DEATH!"
Back then when doing promotional, TV interviews and introducing they did it the same way, you can look for a long vid with all these clips of them saying this kawaii introduction. They were taught to say "th" of "death" word by bitting their tonges at the end to pronounce this the right way, but they added a wink looking like this 😜
You'll see many Japanese fans ended their sentences and comments with "death" to remember this, unlike western fans like me. Btw it's been long since they didn't that introduction and during recent interview at "Fox 5" we saw the intro once again and with MomoMetal this time
During an interview KobaMetal (the producer behind BM) said that when he was travelling for concerts abroads around 2015 he came to know a band like Ghosts and he was interested in discover that band doing the almost same thing they're were doing theatrically and artistically, so anyone thinking those bands are satanic and such they're just saying nonsenses, they're just doing a show in which they're playing a role, and in order to be convincent (like an actor in a movie film) they need to perform their part like they're mean it, and the audience must be part of it and they're an important ingredient because other way it wouldn't work. That's why we said all the time "notacult", unless you actually are or want to feel part of it. ;)
Oh and just a note aside for anyone thinking this is disrespectful to western religion and whatnot, is not! KobaMetal explained he needed to make a bridge between fans and them so they can familiarizing with the BM concept with images the fans already knew, in this case he used the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series as a drive vehicule which is heavily influenced by christianity, kabbalah, gnosticism and even islam symbolism, imagery and iconography, the plot on this was never took as a blasphemy for any religion and it was mostly used for aesthetic reasons, same for BabyMetal, it was used to represent the "Death and Rebirth" concept of SuMetal own role persona while having a bridge between fantasy and reality, the reality is she decided to end up her idol career (death) with Sakura Gakuin and commit herself to this new rol (rebirth) as a metal queen for BabyMetal.
Sorry if this sound as a rant but i just keep seeing BM fans and general people who still don't get it.
Like i said they brought back this song at PIA Arena MM and now with MomoMetal being officially part of the group and also was the intro for every setlist at the Babyklok Tour in the US and now with the EU and UK Tour. You can enjoy tons of fancams around or the live proshot at PIA Arena MM, i think NLMetal got that clip.
Anyway thanks for sharing this and see you next time 🦊🤘💀

      > The Fox God has sacrificed a Jpop idol and reborn into a metal goddess queen.
So wrong. You are implying that she was killed by the Fox God.
Instead, she collapsed and died on the stage as a J-pop idol. THEN she was put on the cross as an offer to the Fox God. He looked down, saw the person that could save metal, and resurrected her as the metal goddess that we all know. This was the day when Suzuka Nakamoto ceased to exist, she became Su-Metal forever.

This performance represents the moment of apotheosis as she is transformed by the power of Kitsune-sama from J-pop idol Suzuka into metal goddess Su-metal. This concert occurred after Su-metal had graduated from Sakura Gakuin, so the show represented her leaving the life of a J-pop idol behind to become a metal singer, and also Babymetal separating from Sakura Gakuin to become an independent act.
Babymetal Death normally opens their shows, but on this occasion it was the closer. It all makes more sense when you see the full concert in sequence, because the narrative is much more clear then. It's a pretty legendary performance for all the theatrics that it features, and it's one that Babymetal fans like to show to people who say Babymetal is not metal. It doesn't get much more metal than crucifying your lead singer.
Babymetal Death is the opener on the first album, and is also usually the opener for their live shows. The purpose of the song is to act as an introduction. That's why they spell out Babymetal, and the girls say their names; they are literally introducing themselves. There is also a play on words going on, because when the girls introduce themselves and say "Su-metal desu" (I am Su-metal), "Yuimetal desu" (I am Yuimetal), "Moametal desu" (I am Moametal), they are also saying "death" because the way Japanese people pronounce "death" sounds like "desu", which means "I am/you are/we are/it is", so they are introducing themselves in a very heavy metal way by saying "Su-metal death", etc.
They stopped performing Babymetal Death for a number of years when Yui stopped performing with them, and only started to play it again in 2023 when Momometal officially joined. It seems that they were waiting to be a trio again before performing it.

    Great reaction, thanks!
No context reactions to this particular performance of "BMD" are so much fun. Otherwise it's considered a spoiler. So I provided you this version. 😁
Well... nothing to see here. Just Su-metal celebrating her 16th birthday with her friends and some of their fans (like 9.000 of them) all chanting DEATH! DEATH! DEATH! DEATH!... Pretty normal in my opinion, haha...
Now seriously, this is from the concert Legend 1997 - SU-METAL seitan sai (Su-metal's 16th birthday party) and took place on December 21st, 2013 at Makuhari Messe event hall in Chiba (Greater Tokyo Area).
The theme of the whole concert was their transition from a J-Pop idol group sub-unit to a legit metal band and this whas the necessary final number with the sacrifice of SU-METAL, giving up her mortal life as a human and idol to reborn as a metal Goddess.
The beat on the intro and the final statue crumbling are tributes to Metallica. The neckbrace thing is one of their recurring tributes to X-Japan's Yoshiki Hayashi.
    Until next time!

In very basic terms, Su-metal was a popular idol. This performance signifies the end of her being seen as a pop idol, which leads to her emergence as a metal goddess.
This song is the first track off their first album, and is seen as an introduction to the band. As such, for a long time, it was always the opening song at their performances. This performance also signaled the beginning of an end to that. While they still used it to open shows, they switched it up and began opening shows with other tracks. Eventually, after Yui left, they stopped playing this track altogether for about 5 years . . . only bringing back when Momo joined the group.
As for the neck brace and crosses, these were both significant in very early BABYMETAL performances and lore.

    @cuttysark8017 Před 8 měsíci +6

Who doesn't love a bit of theatrical "auto da fe"?
The school girl Su is sacrificed to rise again as Su-metal to save Metal. The lyrics are "Death, Death, Death , Su-metal desu, Yuimetal desu, Moametal desu, Babymetal desu" meaning "Death, Death, Death, I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, we are Babymetal". The song is often used to open a concert, but here it is a big messianic closing. The helix at the beginning is also on Su's stick mic in Headbanger and reminds us of life and birth and the crucifixion and song lyrics juxtapose both life and death and it's all done in front of a massive statue of what could be the Virgin Mary with Su's face. Did I mention Babymetal - are #NotaCult.
In real life this concert, Legend 1997 in late 2013, was actually a big transition for Babymetal as it's when they became a true headlining metal band and fully incorporated the live backing band, The Kami Band. In 2014 they would go onto play Budokan and tour internationally breaking out with a set at Sonisphere UK 2014.

this particular performance makes much more sense within the context of the full concert -- this was just one scene of a full-blown metal opera.

  • @Grington300

Great reaction. There can't be many bands who would crucify their lead singer on stage to celebrate her 16th birthday (as you know Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating her 16th birthday in December 2013).
I will try to explain what was actually happening.
You at least had the subtitles with the English translation of the intro video in this one which I think was hoped would have helped a bit (perhaps) with understanding what was happening:
    "Legend 1997.
It is told that receiving the legendary corset (neck brace) from the god of Metal,
she shall abandon her human life and be reborn as a goddess.
The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times
is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time.
    The apocalypse is prophesied
    DOOMSDAY comes
There remains ... little time ..."
This was the finale for this particular concert, but 'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:-
"B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death."
It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to a Japanese speaker the English word death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc.
All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name - and 'death' is just the sort of thing you'd expect to be chanted by any self respecting metal band and their audience while the lead singer is crucified.
On special occasions 'BABYMETAL Death' was used later in the show - as I said before, it was the finale here at Legend 1997, the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday, but this concert was all about transition. It was the last step of their separation from their parent group Sakura Gakuin to becoming an independent band - and more specifically it was about Suzuka Nakamoto giving up her life as a JPop Idol and her human existence to be reborn as the metal goddess Su-metal, chosen to lead the metal resistance.
The concert started with a theatrical piece to Schubert's 'Ave Maria' with Yui and Moa making offerings to the statue of neck braces and then a very obviously lip-synced dance remix version of 'Headbanger' to indicate their origins as a sub-unit of an Idol group. It continued with the girls singing while the instrumentals were mimed by the Babybones (guys in skeleton suits) and to complete the transformation the Kami Band came on to play the last 5 songs (including this one) live.
They only crucify Su on special occasions. The last time that happened with these sort of theatrics was at Legend S, Baptism XX in December 2017 to help her celebrate her 20th birthday - and that one had extra flames.
There were a couple of homages in this performance too. The opening drum riff is an homage to Metallica's 'One' and the statue crumbling at the end pays homage to Metallica's Justice For All tour of 1989 where they also had a statue (Lady Justice) crumble at the end of their shows. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japan drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he had to wear a neck brace a lot of the time, especially when performing.

An interesting take posted on BABYMETAL REDDIT by VulpineDeity:
Take it a step farther. Not only does 'SU-METAL DESU' mean she's introducing herself, it's also her super-hero transformation phrase.
Like on Sailor Moon, Usagi says 'Moon Prism Power!' and turns into Sailor Moon, Suzuka Nakamoto shouts 'I AM SU-METAL' and becomes possessed by the spirit of the Fox God and transforms into the Metal Goddess SU-METAL.
The magical girl who transforms into a hero is a huge trope in Japan, comparable to Disney princesses in the west. BABYMETAL DEATH! follows the trope and it's the moment that they all transform into their magical alter egos at the start of the show.

Lol, this is great, every one gets a shock with the crucification.
“We’re still in the intro!” - Well, you’re not wrong, this IS the intro song to their 1st Album, and live shows. Here, used as a closer.
    *Lyrics:*
Desu (silent “u”) = I am / We are. A play on words with “death”
We are! We are! We are!
    I am Su-metal!
We are! We are! We are!
    I am Yuimetal!
We are! We are! We are!
    I am Moametal!
We are! We are! We are!
    We are BABYMETAL!
We are! We are! We are!
We are! We are! We are!
    *Concert Lore:*
For years, the big bad evil Idol Companies oppressed heavy metal in Japan. Metal-heads prayed to the Fox God and the Fox God summoned Babymetal to lead the Metal Resistance, to infiltrate the Idol Industry to revitalize heavy metal.
In her fight, Su-metal sacrifices her life as a mortal and an idol to be reborn as a metal Goddess.
    *Conclusion:*
If you’re gonna be a Metal Goddess, then the show must match. And there’s nothing more metal than being crucified by your friends and 10k fans for your sweet 16th! 😂🤘🦊

I typically explain this video as follows: first, it's all theatrics; second: NOT A CULT!!!
BABYMETAL clearly isn't afraid to explore different genres with a kawaii metal spin - this is their spin on "shock rock" (i.e.: Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein).

Good reaction. This concert is an important point in the history of BabyMetal.
On the one hand, SuMetal turned 16 the day before. This was the last year that Su could remain in Sakura Gakuin (BabyMetal was at that time a subunit of this larger idol group) since it maintained the structure of the Japanese high school and that year he had to leave Sakura. The success of the group was such that KobaMetal, the producer, requested permission from the parent company Amuse to launch it as an independent group and this concert was the end of the stage as a subunit of Sakura Gakuin and the birth of BabyMetal as we know it today. .
On the other hand, the mythology that surrounds the group is quite detailed (they are the chosen ones of the fox god to save metal) and on this occasion they represented the sacrifice of SuMetal's humanity to be reborn as the Goddess of Metal.
It has no real religious implication (the Japanese are fascinated by Christian "mythology").
