The Roland 808 became a staple in the genre for almost a decade. I find it ironic because that thing is a pile of junk compared to recent machines.
Mike D remembered how the group played around with an 808 drum machine during the Ill sessions and Adam Yauch asked what the tracks would sound like if the beats were played backwards. "Run from Run-D.M.C. was there, and he was like, ’Man, this is crazy.’ But Yauch recorded this beat, bounced it to another tape, flipped it around - this is pre-digital sampling - and bounced it back to the multi-track tape,” he said. “The reversed beat basically became ’Paul Revere.’ Yauch saw this thing we couldn't see - and he killed it.”

Fun fact. LL Cool J’s career was started with the help of Ad-Rock from Beastie Boys. He not only played a song to Rick Rubin, but he also helped produce “I Need a Beat.” That’s how far back Beastie Boys goes. Nearly 40 years.
I had a 78 cutlass in high school. My friend and I hooked up big ass house speakers (the tall ones that came with a rack stereo system). Amp in the trunk and speakers wedged across the backseat. No lie, we wore out two cassette tapes playing this that summer. Almost broke a window or two. Damn, life was good back then.
Did anyone else say Hold it now, Hold it now in their head at the end of Paul revere? Hold it now transitioned so quick after Paul revere on the album that your mind always goes right into it. This album was my youth, blasting the tape loud, walking down the street with the boom box on my shoulder

IMO, Check Your Head is the album that cemented their legacy in Hip Hop.

@@danielbalboni6804 ...from that period there were three albums that changed and elevated hip hop, in my opinion of course. Three Feet High And Rising, Low End Theory and Paul's Boutique. But Paul's Boutique was of an order different, not only in the diversity of the samples chosen, but in the way they were integrated together that not only changed hip hop, but also music in general. The impact that album had on producers was profound.

Beastie Boys are the OG’s of the reverse bass beats! I’ve lost count the amount of speakers that I’ve blown up with their work over the years.

I was 8 when this came out and had the cassette tape. It's still just as good today as it was then. Rhymin&Stealin, slow and low, the new style are a few of my favorites. Classic B-Boy from 1986

I can't believe this song is thirty five years old! Hip hop has come a long way since the eighties and the Beasties have produced some great stuff throughout their career.
You guys have to do more Beastie songs, so influential in the early days,well respected by everyone.
The beat was recorded and then played back in reverse to get the effect. They hung with Run DMC. They started out as a punk band and made the change. In their live sets they would sometimes play instruments
The beat is Its Yours the first single released on Def Jam by T la rock and produced by Jazzy Jay played backwards and if I'm not mistaken Run Dmc wrote this for The Beasties....... not to mention it was Run Dmc who took the Beasties on that tour that was talked about "The RAISING HELL" tour
1986 opened for Madonna and got booed off stage. This whole album "License to Ill" every song is a hit. The kings of sampling!

Beasties had the best beats in the business. Their sample game was next level. Anything off Paul’s Boutique is a prime example of this.
But, Intergalactic is, in my opinion, one of their best.

I've loved the Beastie Boys not long after this album first came out in 1986. They've evolved through so many genres, from their Punk roots, to rock and rap, hip hop, jazz, funk and dance. They've certainly stood the test of time. RIP MCA.

Saw these guys on there last tour and the played all the instruments themselves and other band members. They sounded exactly the same as they do on their recording it was best show I've ever seen in my life

we all had this cassette in high school....golden age of rap/hip hop along with grandmaster flash, run dmc, so many great artists that you will hear today with songs being sampled by current artists as the basis for their songs
yep,didn't matter if you were a rocker, a country fan, or if you grew up in the city or as rural as it gets,we ALL knew album by heart.
Beastie Boys definitely worth digging into.
Paul's Boutique is one of the greatest hip hop album of all time (this isn't off Paul's Boutique). But these guys were just a punk rock band that played instruments and picked up rap in New York because hip hop and punk rock music weren't all that different at the time. They were both with the counter culture.
I don't get the Paul's Boutique love. That album was awful. I got when it first came out, listened to it once and that was it. Check Your Head was their defining album.

Daryl Macdaniels, AKA DMC from RUN DMC wrote the lyrics for this song. It was originally a Run DMC song, but when RUN heard that beat, he put 2 and 2 together.. The rest is legendary gold.
That whole album is killer...however, my absolutely favorite Beastie Boy song is So What'cha Want. You need to give that one a listen.

My 1st 2 tapes as a kid were Greatful Dead Skeletons from the Closet & Bestie Boys License to ill when I was 7. ✌&❤
This was 1986. The Beastie Boys never stopped rapping until MCA died. But they did start playing their own music as well. They were originally a punk band long before they were signed. There is an entire CD called The In Sound from Way Out which is all the instrumental songs and interludes from their 3rd-6th albums. They brought the punk bank fir the immortal Sabotage. (The video is a must see.) This was produced by the legendary Rick Rubin who co-created Def Jam and produced Run-DMC and LL Cool J and thrash Metal band Slayer. Decades later he produced Johnny Cash's final set of fantastic albums. He produced Jay-Z's 99 Problems.
This first album is a bit different from all that followed. It was the first rap album to chart at #1. They then briefly were Madonna's opening act.

Beastie Boys started as a punk band in the late 70's. Eventually they met Rick Rubin, and Russell Simmons who started a label called Def Jam records. Russell Simmons brother is Joseph Simmons, who is Reverend Run from RUN-DMC, who have a co-writer credit for this song.

I went to city schools in pittsburgh. This was 2nd grade for me. We used to see who could go back and forth with some run dmc and then this song came out in 1985. We had a blast! MCA is gone, but not forgotten. He used to run actual audio tape around mic stands and move them to slow down and speed up the beats from led zeppelin, ac/dc, etc., because they didnt have what we do now. He was a genius music lover and I miss the boys terribly because they were so different. They started as a punk band and "License to Ill" was kind of a joke because they were imitating run dmc, but "Paul Revere" and "Fight for Your Right" caught fire. They changed things up every album and I loved it! You wanna party? Beastie boys... period. Thanks for this 😅
Last few years we took a step back I think in all genres of music. 80's and 90's folk know what I'm talking about. We was lucky in the 90's! We had everything from pantera to Tupac! Even country music was good then... the world just seemed better

They get mad respect from hip hop legends, so they’re legit. I love when they got past the frat boy early boast raps and used live instruments and much better songs. Still kept it funny tho. RIP Adam Yauch, a truly good guy.

That sound you like is not shakers. It's a drum high-hat played backwards.
Remember how on cassettes you could play songs from one side or from the other side? A four-track recorder would use the same type of cassette tape but would lay four different soundtracks across the whole tape (2 for each side of the cassette) but all played in the same direction. If you recorded a drum beat on that tape and then flipped it over and played it, it would play all those tracks backwards. This backward beat was originally a mistake they made when they put the drum tape in backwards. It sounded so cool, they decided to keep it.

Listen, I’m 53 years old. I grew up listening to the Beastie Boys I fucking love the Beastie Boys. When they started out, it was sort of a joke if you will, but they did their thing and became so famous and I don’t know if you know this, but they actually founded LL Cool J. They are no joke they’re serious, hip-hop artists. While back in the day growing up when they came out, they were considered rap artists.
You two should dive into the Beastie Boys. The most unique band in American history. And yes, they do play instruments too.

This beat was a standard early 80,s hip hop beat put in reverse with scratches added. This was 1986......The maracas Asia was hearing were the reversed hi hats mixed from left to right.
They were popping in the late 90’s.. I was in HS and everyone had a copy of their tapes in their car.. yes real tapes and mixed tapes… lol

Because the Beastie Boys career spans so long, I find that you have people like myself who like early Beastie Boys and then you have people who like later Beastie Boys.
This record was released in 1986, a month after I turned 16 (what a great time) and it was a game changer. I recommend the song "The New Style" off of this record. And "Shake Your Rump" off of their next one, Paul's Boutique. You only need to listen to a handful of their songs just see how they revolutionize sampling in hip hop. They brought sampling to a whole new level.
The Beastie Boys actually started out as a hardcore band. They played instruments and had a girl singer. But they wrote a rap/hip hop song and the rest is history.

That drum machine was a Roland TR-808. The beat was actually used on T La Rock's It's Yours in 1984. Then in 1986, they played it in reverse on Paul Revere. Both records were produced by Rick Rubin under the Def Jam label. If you haven't heard T La Rock, check him out.
