    Nice video, I use Malaysian Snails and Ramshorn Snails to keep my tanks clean. They are not only good for cleaning the algae up but also eat up any excess food so the shrimp don't over-feed. I leave snails to it, all my tanks have them. One of my tanks has hydra while the other has limpets as well. Their not harmful, and tend to only overpopulate when their getting a large amount of food. I do have no doubt my Platystacus cotylephorus and Bunocephalus spp. pick at the snails though. Their all part of a natural ecosystem :)

    Hey Will! Thanks for the vid! I'm new to the hobby and was wondering, are snails in general bad for a tank? I thought they ate algae...could there be negatives to them besides over populating a tank? I have two in my tank by accident and am now worried

    • @AquariumPlantLab
      @AquariumPlantLab  Před rokem +3

      The main negative with snails is cosmetic. If you don’t mind seeing them then they typically bring more benefit than harm. I typically actually have snails on my setups to help breakdown dead or dying leaves, uneaten fish food, etc.

      @michelek1844 Před 10 měsíci

      They DO eat algae and there is always a lot of algae in a fish tank so...they have lots of food! They do not eliminate algae which is what most people think will happen when they have snails. Surprise! They just landed in snail heaven and will propagate all over the place by laying eggs in places under the gravel where fish can not get them. Have fun!

    I don't do all that. Salt, common table salt. Take your fish out of the tank, and live plants as well. I leave my artificial plants and plastic decorations in the tank. Pour alot of salt in the tank water and leave it to soak a day or two. Dump the water and rinse well, I find that magic erasers work great on the tank glass. Use an old toothbrush to scrub decorations and that's that. Think about it, what do you have if you take a snails shell off of it? A slug, what dissolves slugs? Yup, salt. Salt liquifies a snail right inside its shell. Dead dead dead. No more snails.

      Glad you found it useful! I would take a look at your environment for plants though. Snails are detritivores, this means they only eat dead or decaying organic matter. They don’t eat healthy plants. So something else likely caused your plant to die and the snails just ate the dead/dying plant. Water parameters, lighting, and nutrient availability are the main things to cause plants to die back. 🌱

Whats weird is I found another one on a guava leaf I put in a separate container where I put my platy for quarantine. Do you have a video on getting rid of duckweed without harm to other aquarium plants ?

    • @AquariumPlantLab
      @AquariumPlantLab  Před 8 měsíci +1

      No video on that but I’ve done it many times. It’s really not that difficult in my opinion. Here’s what I do:
      Remove as much as possible with a large fish net. Then use a credit card or similar to scrape any duckweed stuck to the glass down into the water. Use your fish net again to get all of the duckweed you can visually see on the surface. The next day check for any more and remove. Check the glass. Check everyday for a week or two and remove anything that you find. You should be able to get it all without too much issue. If you miss a few and don’t keep after it then it will repopulate.
      That’s about it. I love duckweed and have it in most of my personal tanks but every now and then I switch things up and remove it. Never had an issue getting rid of it. Maybe I should make a video on this 🤔

      @@AquariumPlantLab please do make a video if you have time or people interested, I’d love to watch it!! I learn so much from you, I’m aspiring to build a farm like you have. You taught me how to seed and propagate in one video and I don’t think you meant to 😂
      As far as the duckweed goes, I do love the look of it but my stem plants have been getting their sunlight sucked up by the duckweed, and my red root floaters are also getting overtaken by them. They were honestly a great surprise I bought red root floaters and got duckweed with them, decided to keep them but just need to learn how to keep the population low and keep it from killing my other plants.
      I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my comment !
