      yes, I noticed too that violin teachers treat positions as an unobtainable skill that can only be reached by advanced players.
      It's a huge mistake, position shifting should be within your very first few lessons, they are much easier than portrayed.
      Any chance of picking up your violin again?

      yes, that's the problem with guitar, depending on the type of music you play sometimes you don't need music theory at all and still be insanely good at it, but for piano and violin it's definitely highly recommended. Not necessarily a must, but it will make your playing much easier in the long run.

    • @measurebymeasure3605
      @measurebymeasure3605  Před 5 lety +2

      Any scale can be your first one. Which is the easiest? It depends on the instrument. In Violin a G Major scale is popular because that is the lowest note you can play and start with. A C Major is popular on piano because it's all white keys.
      But the basic principle of ANY scale is the same, it's all about steps and half steps. If you understand 1 you understand them all, no matter what scale you start with.

      what do you mean by skipping? If it is changing positions then your finger pattern changes depending on the scale you're playing.
      The most important thing is to know the notes on your fingerboard, do not try to memorize finger patterns for each position, you will make yourself crazy!
      Just know where the natural C is on the low G string for example and think about that C being a C no matter what finger you use to play it

      The position changes are how high up you go on the neck of the violin.
      Each position is marked by moving a finger one note up.
      (1st position starts with your index on the A note on the G-string, second position you move your index finger to the next note the B-Note on the G-String, and so on)
      You use position changes for
      1) reaching higher notes
      and
      2) certain musical passages are easier to play on a higher position because there is a lot of string crossing going on in first.
      All my videos are played in first position and I'd advise you to learn the first position, once you do position changes will make more sense.

    • @measurebymeasure3605
      @measurebymeasure3605  Před 4 lety

      Best thing to do is to have a violin shop do it. If that's not possible you can do it yourself. You can buy violin stickers online or just use tape. Make sure you place it in the right spot!
      And with time and practice they may move, so peel them off and put new ones on

    Please I have a question how we can know on sheet music if we use 1 or 2 position because they have sometimes the same notes?

    • @measurebymeasure3605
      @measurebymeasure3605  Před 3 lety

      that's a very good question. Some music sheet tell you by putting a roman numeral on top of the note, but when you get more advanced, you choose your own positions and play whatever makes the passage more comfortable.
      There is no absolute set rule on which note has to be played in which position.
      If you're playing beginner pieces, they are all in 1st position.

    How do I know which position a note is in? For example when I see a C, how do I know if it is second position so I use my second finger on the G string or if it is third position and I use my first finger on the G string?

    • @measurebymeasure3605
      @measurebymeasure3605  Před 5 lety +1

      good question. Usually in sheet music for violin it will tell you which finger to use when there is a position change. If there is nothing, it usually is in 1st.
      But you can play it anyway you want it in whatever position makes it more comfortable or playable for you, unless otherwise indicated on the sheet

    • @AnjaWhateley
      @AnjaWhateley Před 5 lety

      Measure By Measure thank you for the reply :) So very basically, it doesn't really matter how I play the note as long as it is the note on the sheet (unless otherwise indicated)? Sorry, I'm very new to violins and playing it 🙈

    • @measurebymeasure3605
      @measurebymeasure3605  Před 5 lety +1

      @@AnjaWhateley yes that is exactly right. you will see this when you play canon in D for example there is a passage that is much more easily played in 2nd position because in first you'd be constantly jumping strings.
      The more you play the more sense this will make to you.
      For now don't worry about it too much and just concentrate on learning the notes on your fingerboard. THAT is key.

      I bought the suzuki books and learned from those, they concentrate more on ear playing though, I took the note reading approach. It's a wonderful series with great songs in it, i definitely do recommend it!

    how many positions are on the violin

    • @measurebymeasure3605
      @measurebymeasure3605  Před 3 lety

      14 in total. You don't need to go further than 3rd for most music though, learning 4 5 and 6 will get you to more of a solo violin level and if you're very advanced you play the rest, very few violin players know these positions though.

      don't at first. concentrate more on playing the notes in tune. Vibrato will do more harm than good at the beginning.

    Sir how many position are there

    • @measurebymeasure3605
      @measurebymeasure3605  Před 3 lety

      there are 14 positions in total. As a beginner you should learn first position, when you're more advanced add 2nd and 3rd to it. As an intermediate player learn 4rth and maybe 5th and if you're advanced you play up to 8th.
      The rest is pretty much only for virtuoso violin players but most violin music can be played within the first 3 or 4 positions.
