This 1995 GMC Suburban GMT400 truck is my dedicated adventure vehicle. While it started out, when I bought it, as a family hauler, I've now owned it for about 8 years and a few years ago it was promoted to my dedicated adventure rig. This Suburban K1500, which means it's 4 wheel drive, also has GM's 5.7L throttle body injected V8. This is the last year before the Vortec 5.7 which itself lasted from 1996 to about 2000. GM then moved to the fantastic 5.3L fuel injected V8 which, although has some changes, is still made and used here and now in 2022.
I thought I'd make a quick documentary style video on my normal daily usage of this truck. It obviously is capable of much more but I wanted to show a typical day of ownership.
With the unfortunate drastic rise in new car prices the used car market has started to balloon as well. If you've ever wanted to get into a GMT400 it seems as though the prices are going to continue to climb. I'm constantly searching the local markets for more good used options and there are still some out there fortunately. But, they do seem to be harder and harder to find.
Of course anything can certainly change that perspective...

I’m still driving a 1997 Chevy Suburban K2500 that belonged to my father in law. I’ve had it 14 years since he passed and I know he’s smiling up there knowing it’s still on the road, still making family memories.
I use your videos to keep my 1995 Chevy Tahoe in top shape. My family bought it new in 1995 and I love driving it even though it's original. Feels great compared to new stuff and I can afford to fix anything on it and happily found plentiful part supplies out there. Thanks for your work in making these videos and have a Merry Christmas!
I found 1road while looking up videos for my 95 tahoe. They are the best!
Oh, make sure to put Lucas in every tank, and once or twice a year, some techron. (O'Reilly periodically and did have last week, maybe still, buy one get one free techron.)
17mpg on the highway, high 12s in town.
I love my 1992 GMC K1500 4 x 4 Suburban. I found it in 2014 still owned by the original owner and was able to finally buy it in 2017 when it had only 156, 000kms ( 96,000 miles ) and I primarily use it during our very harsh cold Western Canadian Winters. Suburbans are the most versatile vehicles ever made..
Great video! I truly believe the GMT400 is truly one of the greatest vehicles ever made.
In 96 they upgraded the engine significantly with the vortec. I absolutely love 90’s and 2000’s GMC products. I have owned many and still do they are the easiest vehicles to work on the parts are everywhere and cheap to replace. They will easily go 250k-300k with normal maintenance on the same engine. This is a very nice looking suburban
Bought my 1999 gmc yukon summer of ‘98… it has 350k+ miles on ‘er now and has been nearly flawless. Still running original engine and transmission and she purs like a kitten. Add in the fact that I trailer a 25’ boat and I have to agree that it’s the best vehicle ever made!
I love my 1995 Tahoe. It's held up remarkably well for being in Southeast Alaska in a salt air environment. I see newer model Chevy trucks and SUVs with peeling paint. The only peeling paint I have is on the rocker panels and only right behind the wheel wells. I enjoy your videos, especially the 1995 videos. God bless you, brother! Merry Christmas to you and your family ❤️❤️❤️
Wow, '95 Tahoe out in Alaska that's awesome!
MY uncle passed away last year and I inherited his 95 suburban k1500. Thanks to you and your channel I've kept the last bit of him I have running. Thank you.
Sorry to hear about your uncle. Keep that truck on the road! 🤙
I miss my 2002 Suburban 2500 8.1 L, may it rest in peace. I am sure i would still have it now if it wasn't totaled. I used it for family duty and adventure. I have 2013 Power Wagon now. It serves a lot of the same purpose and can do some amazing things off-road, but I do miss the enclosed protected cabin of the Burb. The Burb was so versatile and convenient. The newer Burbs just aren't the same. No comparison to my 02 2500.
Great Video Jimmy. One can never go wrong with a suburban. My father had a square body 3/4 ton and endless memories were made on that rig. Now as a father I have a 2004 3/4 (took me 2 years of digging and looking for it until I found the one). Being able to carry 7 people max and tow a trailer never looked so good. Memories in the making as we speak.
I've got a 95 Chevy Suburban K1500 and I love it. I can take it anywhere, even though it's not very efficient on fuel. I get 15MPG out of mine. I bought it 3yrs ago, and not letting go of it. Jimmy, I love the videos about yours, and everything you've done to yours. Good Job.
Amen brother! I’ve got three GMT400s. 97 Tahoe 2dr, 99 Tahoe 4dr, and a 93 Suburban K2500. I’m sure the neighbors think I’m crazy but IDGAF, I love them all.
I like the way your Suburban sits… 👍
Merry Christmas! My 2003 Z71 suburban was the best I'd ever owned. Had it 8 years. Most reliable and lowest maintenance costs. I've had a 99 as well. Love the 350. My 2011 was nice but higher maintenance issues. The 2015 was a nightmare. Horrible engineering flaws and extremely high cost of repairs for items that shouldn't fail less than 80,000 miles. It's gone. I'm now driving a 2010 and so far it's been great. A little more maintenance than my 2003 but a very smooth ride and remote start has spoiled me on days like yesterday.-6 degrees
Oh man, remote start would be a dream. My '03 is so smooth. Thanks for your comment!
As a person who has a 1996 tahoe and a 1998 Yukon it’s funny u said that because I also have a 2016 Yukon and that newer Yukon was a nightmare. I cant believe my other two rigs are 20 years older and drive better with a lot more mileage than the newer Yukon. Unbelievable idk what they’re doing anymore
I have a low mileage 1999 K2500 Sub with the 454 and 4.10 gears. best vehicle I own for long road trips with the fam and dog, hunting, diy projects, etc. Thanks for your videos!
Nice! How's that 454? I've never driven one but have heard they last forever. That would be the Vortec right? Is that like the 350 with the injector spider that's tucked into the intake manifold or are they exposed?
Same here. except i own a 1995 suburban 4X4 454 with the 4.10 gears. I rarely drive it and forget h ow high the rmp s( at 65 mph) run with the 4speed auto.
Low miles also 50,500
@@missingremote4388 My '94 454 and 4L80E is 3000rpm at 80mph.
I've got a 99 k2500 4x4 with 294K miles. Bought it a year ago. Have rebuilt front end, new shocks, steering gear, new exhaust and a few other things. Kept the 16" wheels and put 32" grabber tires on her. I LOVE THIS TRUCK!! She runs smooth, sounds great and I put 475 miles a week on her. I get 11.8 mpg currently. Might do an LS swap one day but no need at this time. I plan to continue to replace things at will it need and never drive anything else again. Grew up in the boat business so everyone had one. A lot of the suspension originally comes from the 1998 k3500 pickup I found. 75mph at 2400rpm; 11.8 mpg, not bad.
@@scottbaker2164 sounds like a fine 99 suburban... wow
You got me Jimmy! I missed this when you first posted (due to visiting my grandkids in DC) and yelled Nooo out loud when I saw the title... I agree, the Suburban is the best all-around vehicle. My first was a '97 K1500 and I loved that truck. It was perfect for hauling kids, dogs, hunting and camping. I upgraded a couple years ago to a '99 K2500 7.4L (454) to pull my trailer a little easier. I can't imagine not having one. Thanks for sharing, maybe next time you'll catch a fish for us.
We are the 3rd owners of a 2005 Suburban 1500 4x4 and we love it. It does have some surface rust but we just passed 350,000 miles and it’s still going. It’s my wife’s daily driver. She wants to get something more economical but it still gets 18 to 20 mpg when it travels to Ohio and back from New Hampshire.
I love it when you make a videos about the GMT 400 my favorite SUV .
Picked up my dad 1994 2500 4x4 silverado xcab pickup just needed a trans runs like a champ only 220k miles paid 2000 for truck and payed 4k for trans mission did a stage 1 with 40k trans cooler
i had 1991 chevy suburban v1500 with barn doors,
it was my finest vehicle,
350 TBI engines are immortal
I daily my a '98 Chevy K1500 Suburban with 321,000 original miles.
After some transmission issues, I ended up swapping it over to an NV3500 5 speed manual transmission.
Now this truck is unstoppable.
Had I discovered you’re site sooner….. I would have made you an offer…. But I’m very happy with the ‘95 C1500 I got….1 owner… garage kept, well maintained and rust free…with the barn doors…. But I’ll sure keep watching your stuff!…. It’s always good, and very helpful!…..
These really are amazing vehicles, when I was growing up my dad had a 1998 Chevrolet suburban C1500 and now that I’m grown with 2 kids of my own I have a 1997 GMC suburban K2500. They can carry your family, haul your stuff, tow your toys, and go off road, what more could you want
I got an 88 GMC suburban with NO back seats, I camp alone, and it’s like a football field back there. I love camping in it, and can carry EVERYTHING I may need.
I love my 93 Yukon 2 door. As a single guy I don't need four doors, nevermind 3 rows. Absolutely amazing vehicles though, reliable, fun, capable, soulful, cheap and easy to fix.
Mines a "99 OBS (Same body style)
1500 Z71 Ex Cab
Pick Up With a Cap and Rack for my Kayak. Had 93,000 original miles when I got it 7 years ago. Paid $4,000 for it. Best Truck I ever owned.
Still My Daily Driver.
I love my 99 C1500 Chevy suburban. I’m an electrician and I’ve made it my work truck. I’ve had the 5.7 liter vortec 4 bolt main bored 60 over cammed and tuned with a free flowing exhaust. Upgraded the torque converter and rear end from 3:42 to 3:73 gears. It’s a beast and I love it. Before this truck I had a 97 K1500 gmc suburban and I worked out of it too and it was a great truck too. I ended up selling it after it hit 205k miles. Before that I had a 98 K1500 gmc Yukon. Before that I had a 94 Chevy Silverado that I lowered … I just love Chevrolet vehicles ! Your trucks look and perform great. Im I’m a subscriber and a lover of your channel. Keep up the great content and good work.
I bought new 2004 3/4 ton suburban it has 61500 miles on it. It has been the best vehicle I have ever own I got it to pull my trailers it broke the bank to buy that one so take care of the one you have they cost more than I am willing to give . thanks for listening to me rambling
I’m going to take your advice by Suzuki died about a week ago and my Volvo is a convertible but I need an extra car so I think I’m gonna do the deep dive like you said I’m gonna look for a one owner and all a car has been kept in the garage with low mileage and a good price that I can pay Thanks so much Jimmy great advice. May you be happy take care of your family remember
I love these old school suburbans! They are very reliable.
I’m rolling in a 1998 Chevy k1500 original motor and trans both went out after 389k I bought the truck originally from my buddies mom for $750 @around 230k
It now has a brand new rear end brand new front end brand new 355 with a built tranny next I’ll be doing body work… yes my 98 is my daily driver. It’s never let me down! Even when the transmission went out on the highway I was still able to grab 1st gear and safely exit the highway. Instead of being stuck on the inside left lane close to death. I wish my truck was as clean as your Tahoe! Happy holidays jimmy! 💯💪
Mileage now sits at 406,5xx
I had a '90s model Tahoe which wasn't well taken care of before I bought it and had tons of electrical Gremlins oil leaks and other annoying repair issues but I will say that the 350 ran strong four-wheel drive worked and like you said it's as big as a minivan.
My 1993 2 dr blazer just turned 30yrs old. I put whipple sc on it 27 yrs ago plus lots more engine and trans upgrades. Bc of these videos iv been able to upgrade the brake system- this truck is like new! I drive it everyday and wouldn’t trade it for anything!!!
I used to own a 1996 Suburban K1500, and miss it terribly. At that point in my life, I had no choice but to sell it when the transmission failed. Now, though, I'm about to start searching for a second work vehicle for my company, and a Suburban is at the top of that list. I absolutely love what you've done with yours, and it's inspiration for me to buy another and build it into the rig I've always wanted, because I'm passionate about overlanding, myself, and having another Suburban would give me the ability to occasionally use it for weekend trips in addition to utilizing its capabilities as a tow vehicle for a company trailer going in to some rough roads and work spaces. As always, your content is amazing and I enjoy keeping up with your channel. Take care!
Where have you been Jimmy its ages since you made a video, glad you're back boss enjoy your stuff !
Nice. I just bought a 2015 Suburban White lt. 146k miles. Drives amazing. Great gas mileage and range.
Nice!
I agree the suburbans 91-03 are the Best Buy in the used market. They will last til 300k if you take care of them & use the tow button to tow or stay out of overdrive while towing. 👍
Yes, like any vehicle, needs to be taken care of. There can be quite a few things to upkeep but most are no big deal. Biggest thing is changing the oil and air filter on time. Also, don't drive it like a hot rod.
Earlier this year I bought my wife a 2017 Ram eco diesel, and the wheelbase is only a few inches longer than a suburban, and it is definitely the family hauler.
I have a 2004 1500 Suburban with the 5.3 and 4l60e 4x4 with 204k . I also have a 1996 K2500 Suburban with the 7.4 454 and the 4l80e 4x4 with 118k. I love both of my Suburban, I use the 2004 for road trips with the family and the 1996 for also going on fishing trips, camping or taking the family shooting out in the desert where I live in AZ. I take real good care of both with maintenance and keeping them clean. I am constantly being bugged by people on the streets or people driving through my neighborhood if my 1996 Suburban is for sale or if they can buy it from me and I always tell them heck no it's not for sale, this is why I keep it parked in the garage because of that reason and to keep it protected from the weather elements. It was my parents family vehicle they special ordered from GMC in 95 and I have family memories in this 96 from my parents and now with my own kids and wife. They are one of the best all-round vehicles around I think and are a perfect family rig from outdoor trips to road trips across the country to running around town or picking up the kids and their friends from school who always fight on who is going to sit in the very back seats. I love my Suburban and will bot get rid of them and hopefully I can pass them down to my kids to make their own memories in them. 😁
I have a 97 chevy 1500 cheyenne single cab v8 love it have it lowerd just a cruiser have a 1999 gmc yukon denali obs platform daily it love it especially in this snow than have a 2500 gmc suburban use it to haul my truck to shows and minor offroading love all three gmt 400 are the best
I bought a 97 suburban in march at 297k miles. People told me to get rid of it but the truth is i just cant. No other vehicle has the durability or the utility of a suburban/yukon/tahoe. She just hit 300k not too long ago and im happy to say shes still running smoothly
I love hearing that. I think biggest thing is making sure the oil is changed on time.
Your video help me fix my Chevy k1500 1996 step side a lot I bought it my in 2019 for $800 with only 126,000 miles the owner was the second owner. He had a lot of cars that he was selling because he was moving.
I've had an 03 Yukon XL, 85 Suburban, and now I drove a 09 Suburban. Bought it at 170k miles, at 210 now. Just did the rear main seal, front seal, oil pan, pick-up tube, oil pump, Camshaft Gear and timing chain. Hopefully I can get her to 300+ and I'm thinking I'll rebuild the motor or buy a crate 5.3. Suburbans for life.
Wow man! That’s impressive!
@@1RoadGarage Props from the suburban man himself, thanks. It's an Ltz with good bones. Thinking about keeping it forever and getting it as close as I can back to that $55000 ride feel when it left the showroom floor. Did the head gaskets about 8 months ago, had a head bolt come loose somehow (Hopefully not my road rage lol). All these fixes were first time jobs for me and each time she started right up, better keep knocking on wood. Can't imagine what it will be like when I have a second vehicle and can take my time.
Mine is a '94 Chevy Suburban K2500. I got it from an old man.
454 TBI + 4L80E, can't remember the differential, only know 3000rpm at 80mph, Highway without trailer is around 12mpg, if cruse around 65mph, can be 13mpg.
I always feed it with the best gas I can find, which is Chevron or Shell's 91; and always change oil by myself with the best oil and filter I can find, which is Mobil 1.
It's my daily commute, but is also a hardworking work horse, heavy trailer long haul, one of the times was an 8000lb trailer coast to coast. And in future, it's gonna have more heavy long haul.
It's also my adventure rig, my first off-roading, first drift on sandy road, first drive in snow storm, climb to 9000 ft altitude, etc.
I crashed it unfortunately, but I find it seems that it is live, radiator stop leaking by itself, passenger door stop colliding with quarter panel. It heals by itself.
I will have another long towing, after which it's gonna be 200kmile. I am going to get its engine and transmission rebuild, to make it ready for next 200kmile.
Currently my most hated thing about this truck is its stupid computer for transmission. It doesn't allow me to step further than around 75% of throttle at 4th gear 65mph. If I dare to do that, it gonna change to 3rd and let the engine run at 3500rpm when 4000 is read line.
I had one like yours and it was an awesome hunting rig. Lift kit and larger off-road tires with a custom mounted 12000# winch. In 2018 it got-boned by a stupid 17 year old running a red light. What a bummer. I also put in a oversized radiator.
Lovely great video for Holly Suburban. I thank you & appreciate you as a Suburban owner. Thank you for making those videos🙏🤘👌
Back in So Cal, my first suburban was a 86 GMC 4X4, 2nd was 1995 Chevy and current is 2001 Chevy, 2500. Sometimes wish we kept the GMC for 2nd vehicle around here in Texas.
Loved the video!!! Just bought a gift wrapped version (Cadillac ESV). Acquired at a good price however, I would rather have the 2500. Beautiful truck you have. Classic!
Haha! I've considered looking at those Cadillac versions too!
Daily a computer and sensor free '85 4wd Suburban and love it. Something needs fixing every month but at least I can fix it myself. Funny how many times i find notes left offering to buy it tho. MPG? Who cares!
Old is gold
The timing may be off as the start up is too many revs before firing.
All that fishing and no fish! 😂 Y’all need to give fly fishing a try…
I love suburbans as well Jimmy I used to have a 1997 GMC suburban had it for about five years and I upgraded to a 2004 I had it about five years as well. I no longer have them, but I regret getting rid of them. I hope to get another one someday. Great trucks.
100% BEST form factor vehicle. My 95 Tahoe "tank" (Rick) got totaled a year ago. I LOOOOVED that truck. I'm still both devastated and furious that some idiot took him out. If I can find another in good condition, I will for sure snatch it up.
Mine was K, and not 4wd. 4dr LT.
man, that rig looks good 👍
that's why I still have my 03 tahoe.
NOOOO THIS TRUCK IS THE REASON WHY I SUBBED, YOU HELPED ME AND SAVED MY REAR SO MANY TIMES!!!!1
I love my 99 suburban but would like to upgrade. Is it really smart to spend $7k on a really nice rust free 99 verses get something newer?
I had 2 YUKON XLs. Loved them both. Kept 02 and sold 04 to buy a Chevy Silverado 2500HD to pull my Travel trsiler.
Nice. The GMT800 is a great platform.
I have a 1996 Chevy Tahoe and I put my key in turn it in an auto starts Uber fast pump start yours seem to have an issue? Why does it take a little time to start? Just wondering
how do you fix the driver and passenger suburban lighted sun visor when the visor mirror cover that presses the light button is broken?
I have a 1997 Suburban im trying to sell . Its in the same condition yours. And i haven't had much of chance to drive it. I love it but i dont have a parking spot for it anymore.
I'd buy something like this but I do a obsence amount of scrap metal and may or may not be looking at ford's like 16 years newer
Nothing wrong with that!
OK so I drive a 99 suburban four-wheel-drive 5.7 any tips or tricks to keep it running smooth has 197,000 miles on it any of your information would be appreciated
Change All your oils flush them and replace with new oils. Transmission, differential, transfer case and front differential. The move to doing brake fluid flush, power steering fluid flush and so on. Do tune up and check it at least once every 2 weeks if it’s your daily.
I love my '04 Burb, I'd love to have a gmt400 series diesel 2500.
Well I’m hoping you’re doing OK. I haven’t seen too much of you lately and so I thought I’d rewatch this one just to get a hit of Jimmy Patton.
I love that 95 suburban!👌
Nice blue interior 🙌 you don’t see that everyday
You've kelp that rig nice this time of the year it's harder to catch fish.
Nice video. I love that Chevy 😊😊
Thanks! Trying a bit different style with this one.
You can't put a Lance camper on your suburban. That is how a tuck is better than a suburban. Your sub is sub par.
Hi Jimmy...Ok, I'll buy it
Well buying a vehicle in California helps out alot rust does not exist here
Wish mine wouldn't have messed up. Hopefully it will be better when im done with the repower
What are you putting back in? Same 350? I'd LOVE to do that Cummins R2.8 Diesel!!!
@@1RoadGarage 6.5td and 4l80e from a 92 c3500 that I got for free. Man said he was tired of looking at it

What size tires you got on it .I know there BFs
I am interested in the truck . How do I purchase it?
Good one Jimmy.. Merry Christmas....😁😁
Merry Christmas to you
99 GMC suburban 323,000 never even changed a belt !!! Just changed oil Brakes and batteries???
Dang!! That's awesome to hear. Can I suggest maybe changing the belt now? At 323K it's gotta be time. Preventative maintenance. .
95 was the best year imo
Boy he's really stretching these videos now, could of been a 60 second short. Instead we gotta watch him fake fish
Where in tn was that filmed? I live in greenback
When are we going to see your wife again on the channel. Enjoyed her inclusion in the past.
Maybe soon!
i actually have a New old stock gm rear wiper arm for these trucks i’m selling!
They can’t be beat 👌
What? No fish?
No fish unfortunately but you know what they say about a bad day of fishin'...
Truck is clean
Do you have alot of play on your steering? Wondering if you do or did at some point how did you fix it
I've never had a ton of play in the steering. I think mostly because the truck only has about 89k original miles. I do still have the original steering shaft with the rag joint but plan on swapping that out soon just because. I have rebuilt the entire front steering and suspension system recently. Check my channel for the recent videos on that.
What are you asking for it?
So, what do you want for it?
Do you plan to speak or add subtitles in Spanish for your next videos?
How much, if you are selling it
Sorry not selling it
no fish?
Chevy Tough
0:23 BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Are you selling that truck?
No. No way!
Did I Win?!
Haha! Thanks for your support!
I’ll give you 100$ cash
Not for sale but thanks for the offer.
Yea don’t sell it! I restored my blue on blue leather 1997 suburban and take it to car shows. Take that side rubber off it will look much better.
@ED you didn't catch my sarcasm did you?
@@gotcheese9163 my response was not to you.
Ram 2500 with the Cummins diesel is the best you can buy.
Definitely a great truck. Thanks for commenting.
