It likely depends on the gauge of your strings and your action height. If your bass strings are lower tension and lowered down, when the string vibrates it has a higher chance of bouncing off the frets which makes it clack. If you alter the angle at which you attack the strings, it should help, but perhaps consider going to a higher gauge and raising your action. Fwiw, my bass strings are flexible but have a solid tension (I use medium gauge tapewounds). If you also use a short scale bass, some of those are usually set up pretty floppy, though you can definitely make those same adjustments to get a tension closer to a long scale bass.
