    Great to see 'Paint Your Wagon' saw it in the cinema in late 1969 - and it was the first movie where I paid for my parents tickets - out of my first wage packet (I'd just got my first teaching job in Sept 1969 and they had helped me (financially) through College. Great movie with 'Wandering Star' song in it. We saw it on a pretty large screen, though not as big as the 'three-projector' screen on which we saw 'How The West Was Won' a few years earlier!

    I just ordered ‘Death Rides a Horse’ and ‘A Fistful of Dynamite’. Both have great scores by Ennio Morricone. In defense of ‘Dynamite’, it varies the spaghetti western trope of a loner motivated by greed or vengeance and expands the characters to their part in a revolution. (Sean, Sean, Sean, Sean.)

    I picked up that "Fear & Desire"! I'm such a Kubrick nut! That 8 minutes of extra footage PLUS all the shorts, made this an "Insta Purchase"!

    Thanks again, Heath. Just ordered Laughing Policeman and Ganja and Hess from Kino. Really enjoy their packages! Just spent last weekend with the enjoyable 23 Paces to Baker Street. Terrific film, beautifully restored with amazing photography. Great deals to be found with Kino Lorber!

    I'll be honest, I paused the video and looked up The Long Riders, it's a great movie and I will be adding it to my collection soon. Also here in Canada, our theater chain is having a Stanley Kubrick festival for the month of April, showing all of his feature films. I even did a press release for it, because I wanted people to know.

    Great Kino update - as usual. Nick Nolte was around 37 when filming NORTH DALLAS FORTY. So he would definitely be a "grizzled veteran" as a football professional, especially in the late 70's.

    LION IN WINTER was based on a very successful play, and the dialogue and situations are brilliant. Great score by John Barry. Hepburn won an Oscar for her performance. Anthony Hopkins first film..and he admits Hepburn gave him film acting lessons on the set. He is forever grateful to her..

    The Lion In Winter one of my favorite Christmas movies 😊

    Thanks for giving a push to The Postman. I’ve always loved this movie, and it holds up for me to this day. Yes, it could be tightened up a bit, but it’s solidly produced, acted, and that James Newton Howard score is beautiful.

    You're gonna love Lion in Winter. It's become a (leftfield) Christmas favourite since I discovered it a few years ago. Hepburn and O'Toole are mesmerising. The last scene is one of my favourite ever.

    Just so you know, when you made your pointed look towards the camera after saying you would love to be on one of these releases for the Fillmore Box that's it cut right to Commercial and boy that couldn't have been a better shot to do it on. Cracked me up

    Paint Your Wagon is a lot of fun. I've been posting on a Clint Eastwood discussion board for over 20 years, but unfortunately that movie has never been well liked on that site. It's really funny and i like it as a musician too.
    I admire the ambition of Kevin Costner's upcoming two part theatrical western. I saw Open Range years ago and did feel like it was a little long, but I'll be interested to see how the first part is.

    Brain Donors!!! I love Brain Donors!!! ...I've been holding on to my VHS copy for a hundred years. You have no idea how happy this just made me.
    It's basically a Marx Brothers movie without the Marx Brothers. It's perfect.

    “Lion in Winter” is very good and a spotlight on actors, but I get what you mean. It’s not the one I’d pop on when I’m just looking to pass the time or have some fun.

  • @yournamehere6002
    @yournamehere6002 Před 5 měsíci

    Brain Donors was a Marx Brothers tribute.....not written by the Zucker brothers, it was written by Pat Proft, who co-wrote the Naked Gun and Hot Shots movies, and also co-wrote Police Academy, Bachelor Party, Moving Violations and Real Genius. Directed by Dennis Dugan, Adam Sandler's go- to director and Richie Brockleman from The Rockford Files and the short-lived self titled spinoff.

    The last box you covered 'Paris Police 1905' no comment to add on it - but for any viewer that feels that appealing - I suggest they try to locate or watch the BBC Two TV Series 'Vienna Blood' set in a similar time period (but in Austria) with a 'Sherlock Holmes' style of crime mystery (only 9 stories)

    Paramount owns John Gilbert's first Talkee his glorious night,1929 that MGM sold in 1957. Paramount has yet to put that on physical media even though it was used to re-make it as a breath of scandal in 1960.

    I have a love for PAINT YOUR WAGON; I went on eBay to find the Roadshow Release program that went out with the movie. Never seen the stage production on which it is based, though my wife was in a production in her school days and she says that the only things shared between the movie and the stage musical are a few of the songs. (I understand that Jean Seberg was dubbed. I used to turn my nose up at Clint Eastwood's singing; in retrospect, though, while he suffers in comparison to Harve Presnell, he still sounds a lot better than Lee Marvin ... note how quickly they throw in the Men's Chorus in "Wanderin' Star" or "Hand Me Down That Can o'Beans")
    LION IN THE WINTER hits two keys for me, because it is, as has been noted more than once in the comments, a Christmas movie, but also a great movie for your Renaissance Festival enthusiast/performer. (24 years at the Kansas City RenFest.)
    I was amused that THE PRESIDENT'S ANALYST would be considered a "dad movie"; I haven't seen it, though the poster font looks groovy, like it's a hippie movie (maybe not ANGEL ANGEL DOWN WE GO, but, if not a hippie movie then at least a groovy movie or a Flint movie), which might make it less a "dad movie" and more like a "My Hippie Grandparents" movie.

    Although I've never commented before, I have subscribed to your channel and I look forward to your Kino round-ups especially and appreciate your thoughtful insight on all the new releases. But the question I have for you is paramount (see what I did there?) Where oh where can I buy that awesome Monogram Pictures T-shirt you're wearing?! Saw "Paint Your Wagon" in the theater back in '69 at the what-the-hell-is-this? age of 11. I remember digging Lee Marvin and "They Call the Wind Mariah" grabbed me. the rest is pretty much flowed over and around me - beyond the recollection of being impressed by the scenery. The film came back to me when watching "Gangs of New York". It's a film I do not like, and as my mind was wandering, I started flashing on scenes from "Paint Your Wagon" and thinking that Scorcese was framing and staging some scenes like a big-scale musical, specifically "P.Y.W". Likely a big reason "Gangs" doesn't work for me.
    Love "The President's Analyst". Most of the satire is going to be lost on pretty much anyone under 50. But even for a younger audience, there are some surprises. It's like a weird mash-up of "Get Smart" and "Three Days of the Condor", with a lot of energy and color. Coburn is great, Godfrey Cambridge is even greater. Plus the always wonderful and slightly other-wordly Severn Darden. Bonus points for Jill Banner.

      Ditto. Every time Kino does a new MGM deal, I keep hoping DANGER ROUTE will be part of it (as well as the goofy-but-entertaining OPERATION KID BROTHER (1967)).

    Larry Buchanan, widely considered to be at the opposite end of the filmmaking spectrum from Kubrick, once told me about a time in the early 50s when he helped the young Kubrick figure out that the problem with a scene SK was editing wad the fact that he had crossed the line when shooting. He wasn't born a genius. He had to learn just like everyone. In this case he had to learn from Larry Buchanan. LOL

    You are unquestionably the Kino Lorber Guru! What do you think of their Blu-ray releases of Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Kolchak: The Night Strangler, Kolchak: The Night Stalker: The Complete Series? What's your best guess (crystal ball) if they will release these on 4K... hopefully soon?

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks! I love the Kolchak releases from Kino. They no longer have the license for the TV movies. Looking into my crystal ball, I don’t see any Kolchak on 4K, at least not within the next five years.

    While your comments about remakes is generally true, Jonathan Demme's Manchurian Candidate is an exception. I urge you to watch it & report back. I only wish KL released a regular Blu-ray, the previous old Blu-ray has poor picture quality.

    Did all our favorite PM reviewers have a meeting and decided “no more nitty gritty 4k reviews” or did one decide to do that and everyone else was like “too hell with it”? It’s fine and all, but the timing is curious.

    Several of what I've seen from Kino lately are too dark (Columbo, Suspect Zero, and Monk). It's like they want everyone to look hispanic. Does the Cartel Bank contract insist on this? Speaking of Monk on blu-ray my search here didn't show a single video about Monk on bd, not a trailer, not a review, not a screenshot. I appreciate and buy some Kino, but getting tired of too dark. I've blind bought Nostalghia, which is a gamble since it's all about darkness and light...the light is critical.

    Kino is losing lots of sales when they do not release bluray only editions of titles they put out in 4k combo packs. I would have made a nearly $100 .purchase a few days ago but there is no way in Hell ill be buying any 4k titles like Marathon man, kindergarten cop, netherworld, etc. When I have no use for the useless 4k disks. I will not subsidize that garbage.
