Mike has recently surprised many skaters by choosing to wear a helmet every time he skates, after decades of skating without one. The culture of street skating, which he helped to define, largely rejects helmets. After some soul-searching, Mike decided it was time for him to make a personal change.
Triple Eight and Mike V are collaborating on GET USED TO IT, a new project to provide a different perspective on helmets. We want to hear what you think and check out your photos and videos.

We have shared this with parents who are worried about their teens safety. My 19 year old daughter came off her board 4 weeks ago, no helmet, hit the back of her head on the concrete. 2 bleeds on the brain, brain surgery, one week on a ventilator and in a drug induced coma. But she pulled through!!! Keep this up dude, you are saving lives! Emma
Im glad she´s ok
big hug for her from across the world ,and for you to ,I know how hard it was for you to
I hope she is doing well. I have been lucky in the past 2-3 months I have skated. I have fallen but not in any way to hit my head...lucky. I am 49 and have no business not wearing one. I wear everything else so why not wear the one piece of gear that could literally save my life? Vainity.... Once again I hope your daughter is making a full recovery.
Is she ok now? Would love an update if that’s cool
Saw Mike talking about this and just went out and bought my first brain saver from socal skateshop.
For the past 3 years I skateboarded and longboarded. I've been unconscious, concussed and bleeding from the head from both types of skating. I wear a helmet so next time it happens it wont kill me. I wear a helmet for when that one freak injury happens. Helmets may not look stylish, but neither does blood pouring out from the skull.
been skating for 15 years, im 21 now, just this may i slipped off my board and hit my head. started seizing on the ground and had a TBI. would have been a different story if i was wearing a helmet. And i thought it would never happen to me. fucking tragic man, $33,000 in hospital bills
This is actually so fucking RADAICAL. Here we have 2 individuals standing what they believe for and it actually makes so much sense in street skating. I completely agree and cheer on Mike V for his convictions and living them out as well as Triple 8 for supporting him. This is conversation that needs to be had just as much as the conversation about women in skateboarding or any other "action sports". I think this video is great and will help influence the younger generation for years to come. Heck this really inspires me to create my own helmet design. I approve!
+Alexander Bailey Thank you for the support!
Absolutely true. I hope Mike V can help change the culture in skating (again). He is the reason i wear a helmet now.
lol.. Mikes convictions: i like money
tripple eights convictions: we really like money
skaters: leave me alone. if i want to wear a helmet i will. like when i go longboarding or skate vert.
pretty funny they got mike V.. they would never get a (modern?) street skater to do this. unlesss its one of those woodward kids...
@@nyrbsamohtB.S. Andy Anderson is arguably the best skater right now and always wears and endorses a helmet. The only reason he doesn’t wear a triple 8 is because he has his own line of helmets.
ive been wearing one now for a year, fuck it im 32 now not 15 and dont give a toss, i skate for me so fuck it what i look like
Amazing stance Mike V!!! I am new to skating at 49 years old. I had a Newporter board(still got it)back in '77 but took a good slam, hit my head(not concussed-luckily)with massive goose-egg and shredded shoulder...quit after that. After a couple of months just rolling around with full protective gear but no helmet-it took someone like Mike V.- who I think is a skate legend to convince me...I'm that lame! Yet to be honest I was already convinced I had to get one. It was seeing the footy of Arto Saari laying in a pool of his own puke after nearly splitting his head open after a failed rail attempt that freaked me out bad. Not like I'm going to start hurling myself down sets but a fall that can cause TBI can happen doing nothing special and not going very fast. Let's keep our brains in tact so we can keep shredding 'til we DIE! Let's get used to it 100%.
Skaters are individuals and no one should be ever criticised for wearing a helmet ⛑ .
When I was in my teens I don’t think I got criticized for wearing a helmet then, but I don’t wear it as often as I do now, but wasn’t per pressure , 2017 was the most recent time I wore a helmet skateboarding because the park I went to looked kind of sketchy
Just got mine today!
Thank you Mike and Triple8 !!!
Its time to make people aware about the risks of skateboarding.
Its time to Pro players, brands and magazines to try to make the difference.
Kids arent Pro´s ,and they will gonna skate withou helmet if their favorite rider dont use one.
Even the skateboarding industry should be concerned on keepin their costumers ALIVE ,dead or vegetable kids dont buy skate stuff.
C´mon guys its up to each one of us to try to change that.
On downhill skateboarding ,this isnt much of an issue, cause "no helmet no respect" thing ,the community just wont accept riders that dont use helmet, period.
It should be like this on every skateboarding modalities.
Nothing wrong with a helmet. Just shows intelligence on his part to protect your most important asset!!
mike v actually rocks the helmet
Julie Hobbs cool reply random dumb doucher .
Julie Hobbs where's your sick ass footy , gal ? Oh yeah , you don't roll .
@@lindsayguzan2230 Looks like you don't need a helmet, your mind is already fucked.
Style doesn't matter if your a vegetable.
Mike v is definitely an individual who has a great work ethic and a great aditude. U have the most respect for him..
I wear one street skating. I don’t even notice it. It’s a subconscious thing.
I remember reading people saying Andy Anderson wasn't good enough otherwise he would have all the sponsors he wanted regardless of his helmet and that Tony Hawk wore one because he rode vert but what's their excuse now with Mike V sponsored by T8? They will always have a reason regardless, wheither it's based on something seriously substantial or not.
This is a important conversation to be had. Helmet use is the choice of each individual, but it's important to understand the risks before making that choice. So, props to you, Mike, for letting logic and your personal opinion guide you rather than the status quo image.
That being said, it's important to know that the Brainsaver with Sweatsaver liner is NOT certified, does not contain EPS foam and has not been tested, nor would it pass, to prevent the forces that act on the brain during a significant impact. I'm actually not sure why these are sold. Be sure to buy the DUAL CERTIFIED BRAINSAVER WITH EPS LINER instead to protect your brain.
Way to go MV, this is so cool! Haters are gonna hate, who cares about them besides them selves?
I skate for me, all padded up, at all times. I don't give a fuck what others think.
Just watch a vid of someone hitting their head, then having a seizure and then people who don't wear helmets will learn something
I launched off the side of this fucking mini ramp in the summer awhile ago thank God I had a helmet on or I would have cracked my melon. I came down on my back and my head whipped and I smacked the back of the helmet on the asphalt hella hard to where I seen Stars still..
In my opinion Andy Anderson and Mike vallely did the skateboarding community a favor if the rest of us see these two guys wearing helmets we won't feel so stupid wearing helmets ourselves
If you think you should where a helmet then you should, if you have experience with falling down with out hitting your head then don’t wear one, helmets give you confidence sometimes enough confidence to break some other body part…. Your head can take an impact of 25mph slipping out on a skateboard can get you going down that fast so with that said if skating alone is difficult wear a helmet
I’m 44 and started skateboarding with my 8 and 9 year old. I want to set a good example for them. Plus there’s just something about wearing a helmet to piss off the helmet police that gives me pleasure, I’m just like that. Got the triple 8 Mike McGill signature helmet and I personally think it’s badass.
knee pads and stuff like that feels weird and messes up movement [for me] but helmet is like a hat and its most important protective gear thing and these days they are so light its like wearing a hat. cool people dont care about being cool is what i think iam saying here :)
And yeah protect your dome, especialy young kids starting out. Drop your pride and wear a helmit until you reach that next level! As a growing sport and art that has reached olympic status, O. G. Skates need to be honest with nuby's, you can do damage! Thanks Mike
His whole point is to keep wearing it even after you reach “that next level” even pros hit their head. It’s just not being talked about
Current skaters dont know how rad yall were then!
Josh Katz is gonna lose his freaking mind, surprised he has commented on this video yet.
+MilkSteak23 hasn't*
Triple 8 is an OG rollerblading company, the irony of this is..making my head explode
as a rollerblader in the 90s through the early 00s, i never heard of it
thirael Same here, although I had heard of triple 8 I'd never heard of them being a blade oriented company.
...and Adidas made tennis/running shoes, yet *the Gonz* rode for them. Why does the brand even matter? Its a helmet.
Great but I'm not sure Mike is wearing a certified helmet here. Do your own research on certified vs un-certified helmets!
You are correct - he's wearing a Sweatsaver in this video. However, this video is a few years old, and he has since switched models to our new Certified Sweatsaver.
Thank you for your reply, I can see that your website now heavily features certified products on the main page which shows you guys care about this but it still doesn't feel right that you and others still sell the unsafe technology alongside.
Ultimately of course it is the legislature that bears the greatest responsibility to the public and your progress is definitely commendable.
I will have to check out the new model!
I don't wanna any damn vegetables
and look how many scratches are on his helmet
If you're going wear some safety gear it should be wrist guards.
sure cause if you brake your wrist you can have serious brain damage
it looks like you allready have
lol
Mike V has always been a little off……
some one got a new helmet sponsor....
its cool Mike, you can make it sound like you are a "artist"
we all know you are wearing that helmet to make some quiche.
+BarkersBrain your point would be more valid if this were some new pro who didn't have a skateboarding legacy, but it's a pure legend in Mike V, so....
Mike V is a legend. You are not. Kids look up to him and will wear a helmet and stay safe. Be able to skate longer than not. Mike V IS skateboarding.
lol mike may be a legend. but hes just cashing in here, noone will wear a helmet lol. I applaude them trying to create a new market for their product and make money but
you do realize a shitload of skaters wear helmets , especially trans and vert , practicing before they film vid parts right ?! Smoke and mirrors, kid . Concussions super suck and many of us are all fuckered up because of them .
He’s a legend that risks his reputation taking a blow but still decided to endorse the helmet. That’s conviction.
Helmets take away ALL OF YOUR STYLE because they are made for people who dont have style. If you want a propper helmet wear a helmet with style. Like for example Spartan, gladiator, knight helmets. They were taylor fashioned for Style. Being who you are implies having your style. Funky 80's robocop helmets are very out of tune with peoples style and that is why they aint cool.
Im all for protection and pushing bounderies. But style comes first.
you sound like a moron lmao
Holy shit. I hope in the three years since you left this dogshit of a comment you’ve gotten smarter. Probably not.
this is really crap.... did not expect it from MV
then go out and stand for your own ideals and stop bitching
+abinorme It's perfectly OK for you to think it's "crap" for Mike (or others) to wear a helmet. You have the right to your own opinion. But if you want your opinion to be taken seriously, you have to give *reasons* for it. In other words, don't just say something is crap; tell people WHY it's crap.
A fuck you.
Crap because kids look up to him and will wear a helmet and be safe? Or because he is true punk and doesnr give a fuck about the "look"
Thats the problem with a lot of skaters... big obsession with ego and image. Its a thing you wear on your head.. like a hat. But protects you from death. Dont get rapped up in being so cool
I guess mike needs some money.
Don’t expect to get any respect from street skaters if you whip out a bright blue helmet. 👎🏼
No he dosent need money, he's a element millionaire whos in his late 40s with 3 daughters and a wife, he obviously dosent want permanent brain damage and dosent wanna be a vegetable his whole life. And who gives a fuck about respect for protecting yourself. Just straight dumb
