Mike has recently surprised many skaters by choosing to wear a helmet every time he skates, after decades of skating without one. The culture of street skating, which he helped to define, largely rejects helmets. After some soul-searching, Mike decided it was time for him to make a personal change.
Triple Eight and Mike V are collaborating on GET USED TO IT, a new project to provide a different perspective on helmets. We want to hear what you think and check out your photos and videos.

We have shared this with parents who are worried about their teens safety. My 19 year old daughter came off her board 4 weeks ago, no helmet, hit the back of her head on the concrete. 2 bleeds on the brain, brain surgery, one week on a ventilator and in a drug induced coma. But she pulled through!!! Keep this up dude, you are saving lives! Emma

I hope she is doing well. I have been lucky in the past 2-3 months I have skated. I have fallen but not in any way to hit my head...lucky. I am 49 and have no business not wearing one. I wear everything else so why not wear the one piece of gear that could literally save my life? Vainity.... Once again I hope your daughter is making a full recovery.

For the past 3 years I skateboarded and longboarded. I've been unconscious, concussed and bleeding from the head from both types of skating. I wear a helmet so next time it happens it wont kill me. I wear a helmet for when that one freak injury happens. Helmets may not look stylish, but neither does blood pouring out from the skull.

This is actually so fucking RADAICAL. Here we have 2 individuals standing what they believe for and it actually makes so much sense in street skating. I completely agree and cheer on Mike V for his convictions and living them out as well as Triple 8 for supporting him. This is conversation that needs to be had just as much as the conversation about women in skateboarding or any other "action sports". I think this video is great and will help influence the younger generation for years to come. Heck this really inspires me to create my own helmet design. I approve!

Amazing stance Mike V!!! I am new to skating at 49 years old. I had a Newporter board(still got it)back in '77 but took a good slam, hit my head(not concussed-luckily)with massive goose-egg and shredded shoulder...quit after that. After a couple of months just rolling around with full protective gear but no helmet-it took someone like Mike V.- who I think is a skate legend to convince me...I'm that lame! Yet to be honest I was already convinced I had to get one. It was seeing the footy of Arto Saari laying in a pool of his own puke after nearly splitting his head open after a failed rail attempt that freaked me out bad. Not like I'm going to start hurling myself down sets but a fall that can cause TBI can happen doing nothing special and not going very fast. Let's keep our brains in tact so we can keep shredding 'til we DIE! Let's get used to it 100%.

Its time to make people aware about the risks of skateboarding.
Its time to Pro players, brands and magazines to try to make the difference.
Kids arent Pro´s ,and they will gonna skate withou helmet if their favorite rider dont use one.
Even the skateboarding industry should be concerned on keepin their costumers ALIVE ,dead or vegetable kids dont buy skate stuff.
C´mon guys its up to each one of us to try to change that.
On downhill skateboarding ,this isnt much of an issue, cause "no helmet no respect" thing ,the community just wont accept riders that dont use helmet, period.
It should be like this on every skateboarding modalities.

They will always have a reason regardless, wheither it's based on something seriously substantial or not.

  • @InlineDownhillVancouver
    @InlineDownhillVancouver Před 9 lety +5

This is a important conversation to be had. Helmet use is the choice of each individual, but it's important to understand the risks before making that choice. So, props to you, Mike, for letting logic and your personal opinion guide you rather than the status quo image.
That being said, it's important to know that the Brainsaver with Sweatsaver liner is NOT certified, does not contain EPS foam and has not been tested, nor would it pass, to prevent the forces that act on the brain during a significant impact. I'm actually not sure why these are sold. Be sure to buy the DUAL CERTIFIED BRAINSAVER WITH EPS LINER instead to protect your brain.

  • @UTP_ENT

If you think you should where a helmet then you should, if you have experience with falling down with out hitting your head then don’t wear one, helmets give you confidence sometimes enough confidence to break some other body part…. Your head can take an impact of 25mph slipping out on a skateboard can get you going down that fast so with that said if skating alone is difficult wear a helmet

Helmets take away ALL OF YOUR STYLE because they are made for people who dont have style. If you want a propper helmet wear a helmet with style. Like for example Spartan, gladiator, knight helmets. They were taylor fashioned for Style. Being who you are implies having your style. Funky 80's robocop helmets are very out of tune with peoples style and that is why they aint cool.
Im all for protection and pushing bounderies. But style comes first.
