  • I had a difficult decision to make when my 7 year old high usage outboard started to give problems. Throw money at it or replace it with new. I decided new was the way to go especially at the price Anderson Marine offered. I need a very reliable outboard going alone into the promised land in winter. There is no one else around and a possible 10 mile row home in bitter weather could be the end of me. So that is my Xmas pressie to myself ..another 7 years of reliable outboard use ..Marry Xmas to everyone from me too :-D

      I cant believe how much more powerful the new 6HP seems compared to my older one..even though its the same outboard Simon. I guess its because the wear on the old one was gradual..so I didnt notice its performance drop off..I used to think it was because I was eating too many pies that it seemed to get slower and slower. I do owe David Anderson quite a bit as he has been very good to me over the last few years. I believe he enjoys my videos too :-D

    Just to let you know that I have been up there at Loch Awe , & there used to be a steam boat there & had a very enjoyable sail on it , then after a number of years they brought up a railway carriage from somewhere & turned it into a railway cafe & that was excellent, so you could have something to eat & drink, then have a sail on the steam boat on Loch Awe, but after a number of years they took the steam boat away down to Loch Katrine, -- so a bit of history about Loch Awe in , but the video was very good, - thanks very much.

      Hi John..sorry for late response but I was winter hibernating during the recent storms, Yup..the railway carriage cafe is still there ..Part of the Lochawe Hotel group ..think the serve their guests breakfast in it. Some old steamboats are slowly rotting away on the shores just south of Innisail and sadly no active ones left..but I have been on the Loch Katrine Sir Walter Scott ..a lovely day out..thanks for the memories :-D

    Merry Christmas Donny, You seem to give us PRESENTS 🎁 all year round so you are my Father Christmas, who says they don’t believe in SANTA when you are around. Those still pictures were breathtaking and from somebody who know the area quite well ( because of you) the pictures taken with the drone at the right height just reminded me how much I miss that place even though I was last there in September. It makes me almost wish my life away to the second week in January where I will be camping on two island on Loch Lomond. Thanks for sharing Ray K UK YNWA.

    Those shafts are repairable. I have in the past TIG weld repaired such shaft wear. I always fit bronze plain bearings. They last longer and won’t cause that kind of wear even when there is seawater in oil.
    Wish you a Merry Xmas.

    • @donnywilcox
      @donnywilcox  Před 7 měsíci

      Im sure many could repair the shafts ..but that is not my idea of a hobby tkaald. I enjoy using outboards but not making them. When the gearbox was so worn I also know the top end would be nearing end of its life too so I preferred getting a new one. At my age..a breakdown up the loch in this winter weather could be the end of me..so want reliable especially as I could afford the new outboard.. each to their own way.. thanks for stopping by anyhoo :-D

    Hi Donny, and thanks for another great video.I think you made the right choice going for a new outboard. Very few leisure/weekend boaters put anything like as many hours on an outboard as you do, and reliability is paramount...though to be fair, I'm amazed at how reliable and robust many outboards are. I have a 9.9hp Mariner from 1986 and it's a beautiful thing! For about 6 years I didn't use it at all, but always started it once a year, and it always started 2nd pull. I treated it to its first professional service this year, ready for some adventures that never happened, but 2024 will see it running frequently, I hope.
    Incidentally, it's from the era when that size of Mariner was a re-badged Yamaha, and further to that, it's a de-tuned 15hp, so relatively heavy. I know you can get kits with new reeds to take it up to 15hp, but for me it's fine as it is, running smoothly and unstressed...and of course it's a beautiful 2-stroke! I love it!
    Anyway, enough of my ramblings.
    Sending you my best wishes for a happy, healthy and peaceful 2024, with many more memorable cruises to undertake, to film, and to delight your viewers.

      Thanks Colin..yup..they do last well Colin .. I have a wee Mariner 3.3 from 2005 and my last 25HP two stroke was from same year..never a moments problem. However neither were used so much as the 6HP which is in constant use. ..and kept full throttle 95% of its time :-D

    Hi Donny. Wor lass and I really enjoyed watching this video. Pointing out to her the area and spot you and I stopped for a sandwich and coffee break and a good pee. Would you say the yamaha 6 is more reliable than the Tohatsu 6hp. I've been thinking on getting a 6hp. Thanks Steve 👍

    • @donnywilcox
      @donnywilcox  Před 8 měsíci +4

      I think they are all much the same nowadays Steve. When I got the first Yam6hp four stroke it was the only make that could be laid down on three sides. That was the seller for me back then. Anderson Marine price this time round knocked the socks off every other outboard.. including other Yam dealers. You cant go wrong asking him for a price ..then compare with others.. thats what I did but he knows I buy a few outboards from him..its where I got the 25HP ..again at "mates rates" ..but that may be that Im just Im lucky and look poor :-D. Im certain he will give a good price though ?

    Thanks to you I'm thinking of giving up my Canadian canoe. And getting my self a rib or sib . I do own a 2.5 hp seagull engine and an electrical outboard. 65 pound thrust . How do you think they would get on with an 3 m inflatable ?

    • @donnywilcox
      @donnywilcox  Před 8 měsíci

      Hi Phil ..20 years ago.. recovering from an expensive divorce I could only afford a 2.75m seago slatfloor inflatable and a 2.5HP suzuki fourstroke outboard. Do you know..it was the best fun/value for money boat I ever had and it kept me amused for 6 years. So I have a good idea of whay you can expect. It wont go any faster than your canadian canoe will go but it opens up longer journeys and in a bit rougher water than in the canoe. I often accompanied some friend who had sea kayaks so know I could easly keep up with them ..even the fastest paddlers on a sprint ..but I could keep going and going until it ran out of fuel. They stopped when they ran out of steam which was way before my outboard. I used it in the sealochs of the west of scotland in good to reasonable (F2-F3) weather. I also kept well in shore on sea coasts but learned to allow tides to assist my progress as strong tides could hinder it. I also kept going into wind and waves on the way out knowing it was easier to get blown back if things got to difficult. Dont expect it to go at plane speeds and you wont be disappointed ..you will be looking at similar speeds to my video here with the 2.75m inflatable and 3.3HP mariner ..which I still very much enjoy. You can always get a bigger outboard when money allows if you want to go plane speeds..which is a lot of fun too ..and some folks dont like going displacement speed as its always a rush to get everywhere ..hope that helps

    • @philwhelan226
      @philwhelan226 Před 8 měsíci

      Yes, that helped alot thank you I did see the episode with your friends on the sea kayaks . Thank you for all you video . I intend to keep to fresh water lochs for now . But I'm tempted to do loch etive next year sometime

    Steven.

    • @donnywilcox
      @donnywilcox  Před 8 měsíci

      I steven.. I have two Juice MAX 20000mamphr portable batteries from argos ..at around 25 quid each. Each portable battery will charge a phone 7 times.. so will charge all three batteries and the remote once. I charge the portable batterys from the outboard when underway during the day..then use the portable batteries to charge the cameras and drone, phones etc during the night. that way im not risking the outboard charger giving spikes to expensive electronic equipment..if that makes sense.

    You've got me worried! I have a 4hp Yamaha F4B which i think is same as your old one? Do you think you could have got any fishing line on propeller shaft with seal failing? Was there play in bearings or did it only show when you stripped it down.

    • @donnywilcox
      @donnywilcox  Před 8 měsíci +2

      i teaserlive .. dont be too worried as 1000hours can equate to many years of weekend boating especially if its only fair weather boating. It is counted while running and not when stopped fishing etc. It was the main dealer that told me these small outboards are doing well lasting 1000 hours. I got around 2000 hours out of mine over 7 years. I used the 6HP two or three times a week going 20 - 30 miles each time I was out...and all year round. It cost new £900..that works out at a cost of £2.5 per week. What other hobby is as cost effective as that ? The seals only started to leak the last couple of times I used it.. and that was because they were then all that was holding the prop shaft in place due to the wear.. so nope it was nothing to do with faulty seals. I started noticing a slight drop off in performance a year ago and very occasionally it would jump out of gear under full throttle acceleration. That was the wear starting and the seals were fine then. Buying a second hand outboard would have been my cheapest way or replacing the gear box parts.. but I didnt want to throw money at it as things like the fuel pump and top half must have been wearing too. I need a very reliable outboard for winter time as hypothermia could kill me if it broke down miles from home in the remote areas I go. I got a good discount plus sold spares off the old outboard.. so it was still around the same price as 7 years ago for the new one ..therefore still costing only £2.5 a week if I get 7 years hard use out of it too..which is same price as half a pint of beer in my local ..so Im not worried...and hopefully that helps put things in context.. just dont expect them to last as long as car engines or much larger more expensive outboards.

    • @YorkshireBeaver
      @YorkshireBeaver Před 8 měsíci

      Thanks for reply & yes probably done about 300hr on my Yamaha which is much less. Maybe the restricted 4hp will put less wear on bushes too if not running as hard. I have a Tohatsu 8hp twin cylinder on a canal / River cruiser that has done 700hr & not sure if that has plane bearings as well? time will tell how it copes.. Anyway love your videos & making the most of life !! Cheers @@donnywilcox

      @donnywilcox  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I admit.. Anderson Marine mentioned I would be better off with a 8HP twin as he knowns my milage which is almost commercial usage ..however I cant carry an 8HP down the steep banking from laybys where I often launch from..so like all things boat..I have to compromise. @@YorkshireBeaver
