- Gerald Ford funeral service at National Cathedral.
----
I am looking for the part where the black solo woman singer sang. My recording was faulty for that part. It was so beautiful, please tell me if you have it.
I am so pleased that when the family planned Pres Ford's memorial they included all the beauty, reverance, and solemnity of their beloved Episcopal church. Particularly within the magnificent building that is the National Cathedral and closing with this beautiful & moving hymn with ALL of the people signing together in unison.
Thank you for posting this. I love this hymn and it was beautifully arranged. Rest in Peace President Ford!!
I cried during "For All The Saints" when I saw the Fords clinging to each other for solace. That is the first time that I cried at a funeral. I am an Episcopalian and I felt akin to the Fords and all my brothers and sisters in the National Cathedral that day. That was Bruce Neswick on the organ.
I remember watching the funeral, but had forgotten that this was the final hymn. It's one of my favorites, and how wonderful to stumble upon it on CZcams. God bless Gerald Ford, Barack Obama, and the United States of America!

The most beautiful funeral I have evrr witnessed. A good man and whom I admired not least for showing compassion for former President Nixon.
This is one of the greatest hymns, which cannot be recreated by todays "modern worship".
I just don't get that spiritual feeling from contemporary hymns since 1980
Well, that's because no U.S. president has died since that day.
You are spot on, friend. The so-called ‘contemporary worship’ has some of the most tuneless and asynchronous words ever. reading from the Word is not a compromise, but the millennials’ preference of the impersonal phone it in sermon I don’t get.
This melody FOR ALL THE SAINTS is by the English composer Ralph Vaughn Williams. It was just performed at Busch 41 funeral too.
Nothing better than a completely full Cathedral singing "For All the Saints" with a huge choir to lead them!! The Trompette En Chamade caught the attention of one of President Ford's sons on that one stanza. LOVED it!
That is one of the greatest anthems of the Church.
such a beautiful hymn...one of my favourites!
Great and beautiful hymn fit for the passing of human beings, created in the very image of God Almighty.
Thanks for sharing.
RIP President Ford and Betty Ford.
When I became a chorister in a famous NYC Episcopal church boys choir 41 years ago, this was the first hymn I sang with the choir. It's been my all time favorite, Erik Wm. Suter organist at Pres. Ford's funeral, gave it justice against that huge choir.
I agree, a very touching, beautiful....are rare...showing of national unity.
It occurs to me how sad it is that the national church building of our nation is so rarely seen on TV. It is a testament to fine craftsmanship and architecture. There are so many videos out of England showing Westminster Abbey. Surely Americans now have a building where our religous celebrations can be held in dignity and telecast to everyone. I say we need to showcase this building as often as possible not just when a President dies.
Poor Betty, you can just see her heart breaking :(
The only way to end a national funeral-- with all 10 verses of the greatest Ralph Vaughn Williams hymn of all time. Brilliant.
The accidental President but who did a good job to heal this Country after Watergate and Vietnam. I remember the Press savaged him for being a Klutz but he was anything but a Klutz, he was a Collegiate All Star in Football and an Eagle Scout. He just wasn't a good golfer. Our Country was lucky he was available to pick up the pieces after Rockefeller and Nixon. He did an able job!
Erik Wm. Suter on last stanza used full organ including the 64' Bombarde in the pedal, Trompette En Chamade in an earlier stanza, WOW!! what a fitting way to end a stately funeral at the National Cathedral. Ernest M. Skinner (he built that organ)would have been proud!
Soon, All Saints will roll around again (celebrated this year on Sunday November 4 unless you are in a church which has a service on November 1) and in almost every Anglican or Episcopal Church we will sing it - some of us with wonderful organs well played and some with lesser expertise. But William Walsham How's words and Vaughn Williams soaring melody in G major will inspire once again so that " hearts are brave and arms are strong". May this wonderful tradition never die.
Hopefully this great hymn will be played at the next state funeral hopefully not for a long time
Agreed. Also, how the camera pans to the "Christ the King" rose window immediately after that touching moment. I also like when the camera (at 5:00) pays homage to his longtime home state by panning up to the Michigan flag.
The song on this video is called 'For All the Saints'. It's an Episcopal/Anglican anthem written by a Bishop.
Right on dude!
@keithsy75 I am Episcopal (Anglican) to. I Cried because He was a great conservative strong brave man. God Bless him
Actually, it's an old E.M. Skinner. AEolian-Skinner added ranks in the 1960's and 1970's if I'm not mistaken (I don't have the history of this organ in front of me as I'm not home). My all time favourite hymn.
BDM
Praise God! RIP Gerald Ford
Hail to the victors, valiant hail to the conquring heroes Hail, Hail to Michigan the champions of the west. I'm sure Gerald himself would of loved to hear it at his service. Once a Wolverine always a Wolverine. Rest in peace Mr President.
Look at the work currently being done by John Rutter. Some of the most beautiful, worshipful, theologically sound Christmas carols ever written, for example, are Rutter's. He is also an acknowledged agnostic.
@moproducer what did he do to make you say sutch a thing
Where can I find this arrangement of 'For All The Saints'?
May Former President Ford rest in peace.
Does anyone have a video of the singing of the Navy Hymn during Ford's funeral?
It was glorious!
@furley523 yes we do! This is my favorite hymn. Proud to be ECUSA!
GERALD FORD WAS ONE THE BEST US PRESIDENTS IN US HISTORY
I believe I might have that as I taped the entire funeral. I think she was the opera star Jesse Norman and I'm sure I've misspelled her first name.
Silly footnote: Love at 6:40 both Bushes are reading music lyrics with their glasses at respective old guy position (down a third or so--like all old guys wear them)
What was the soprano''s name please?
You know Father Robert Certain? He used to do the Chapel Services at my school, but he retired after he did this...
realized I typed this comment wrong 6 m. ago. it is actualy 5:40. just gave me a chuckle in a somberish day.
@theproducerspart2 He was born in Nebraska!
How incredible that God would use a nonbeliever to create great music that uplifts believers. WOW!
Always Michigan President Ford! Go Blue forever!
@SIKE01 As for JFK, I believe Oswald acted alone. At the time (September 1974), I was very much opposed to the pardon of Richard Nixon. Surely there was some "understanding" between Nixon and Ford, particularly since the pardon came exactly one month after Nixon announced he would resign. You are correct about Sipple, the ex-Marine who was gay. Viewed with the benefit of nearly 40 years of hindsight, though, Ford made an important contribution to the Nation which cannot be denied.
The intro in your video of For All the Saints is very close though.
He was an honest man who could be trusted. They don't make Republican's like this anymore...
or Dems?
My guess would be Eric Suter. He was the Cathedral organist at the time.
Stirring and triumphant hymn, but I was moved most by the scene at 3:05 of Mrs. Ford and her sons huddled to share the program. From what I've heard (I was born and brought up in DC), the Fords were the "most real" and "most fun" family to have inhabited the White House--in our time, anyway. I wasn't around when Andrew Jackson was in office...
in the full version there is 10. :P
@TheAlltimeBrawlers The unvarnished truth is not cool. Who would you want, Truman or Ford?
So many of the people here are gone now: both Fords, George and Barbara Bush...
oops, I meant to address that comment to the people insulting Ford
the magic bullet man,🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
A decent man.
BETTY FORD AND GERALD FORD ONE OF THE BEST PRESIDENT AND FIRST LADY TEAM
your re kidding right?
Not the first time it's happened, I'm guessing.
@pwthcim Mr. Ford doesn't need your prayers. He is in the presence of the Lord. Consider praying for forgiveness of your own sins.
@furley523 Equality does not mean the same! That was never the teaching of the church going back to the earliest centuries!
not good enough answer, anyone else? :)
@mindspring57 GERALD FORD role on the WARREN COMMISSION was to keep tabs on the other committee members for the FBI. He gave RICHARD NIXON a free pass...without him admitting his GUILT or APOLOGIZING to the AMERICAN people for his crime...and finally, FORD was nearly assassinated (twice) the second time he was saved by an innocent bystander. He didnt have the decency or class to invite the guy to the White House to give him a medal. or years later attend the man's funeral....cause he was gay!
@moproducer oh
@hubertjudge Composed by Ralph Vaughn Williams, an avowed agnostic.
@frogleg10 When you disagree with someone, Frogleg, you call them "hateful and nasty".
Let me put a question to you: If my comments had been directed at Bill Clinton or Barack Obama, would I still be "hateful and nasty" or would you heartfully agree that they took America the "wrong way"?
Hypocrisy is really taking over the world lately, Froggy.
@pwthcim From your response I'd say that you are the one in need of prayer. I sure hope you check your attitude before attempting to witness to anyone.
@mindspring57 Gerald" GLORIFIED FOOTNOTE" Ford
i know the husband of the daughter of ford
im from tulsa
ok
even after his death you say this? ...it's ok, he won't have to hear your words now.
right...for Nixon.
@mariofreak4500 Make me.
@TheAlltimeBrawlers Buddy, it's a free country. You like what you like, and I'll like what I like. If you don't like, go to Cuba & pal around with your buddy Fidel. But don't even try to tell me what to say and where. I'm an American.
How DARE you????
Gerald Ford's initials stand for GLORIFIED FOOTNOTE.
...and he's a Mormon.
