    The German patrol vessel is a British Harbour Defence Motor Launch, a lovely looking boat and they don't make them like that anymore and they were quite popular

    Good old days, Alistair MacLean at his best. The Germans had everything, gun boats, u boats, torpedo boat, you name it they had it. Only thing they lacked was spirit, which the Allies had. They fought for FREEDOM. So they won... God bless all the veterans of WW2....!!

    This is probably the most unrrealistic movie about WW2. From beginning to end. There are so many things shown in this movie that would have never happened in reality that it boggles the mind, For ex. that the Germans could leave such strategic weapon as those two Gustav-like gun without tight vigilance for a single moment during the night...! Or that Allied commands that are captured would be taken as a group and brought to a room to be interrogated as a group by just two lightly armed German officers. And I could go on and on.

    • @lucianene7741
      @lucianene7741 Před 6 měsíci +1

      These were not "Gustav-like" but more like 11 to 13 inches in caliber, meaning WWI-era battleship guns. Just two of them would have been totally ineffective, as battleships usually employ them in 8-10 gun salvos to have any chance to hit an enemy ship. The Gustav was over 30 inches in caliber and the projectile alone would have been twice the height of a man. Needless to say, transporting and installing such a monster on a small Greek island would have been utterly impossible.

    • @rubenoteiza9261
      @rubenoteiza9261 Před 6 měsíci +1

      I'm talking about the guns featured in the movie, not the ones that were around at time in that neck of the woods. And Stephen Warren agrees with my in Quora:
      Complete fiction, but inspired (according to the author) by the 1943 battle of Leros during WW2. More precisely the aftermath. The guns there were basically just six inch naval guns not the behemoths of book and movie fame. It was also a microcosm of the battle for the entire island and the defenders were Italian and British against the Germans. The Germans won. They then used the surviving 11 of those same guns to fire at passing allied ships for the rest of the war. The only comparable (to the story) cannon would probably be the 2 German huge “Gustov” 800mm railroad guns. Impressive yes, efficient, not so much.
      Rest my case.
