Reaction Time vs. Reflexes | 4 Scientific Ways to Improve Reaction Time- Thomas DeLauer…
Neurons:
Brain cells called neurons send information and instructions throughout the brain and body - the information is sent via electro-chemical signals known as action potentials that travel down the length of the neuron. These neurons are then triggered to release chemical messengers called neurotransmitters which help trigger action potentials in nearby cells, and so help spread the signal all over. The sense of knowing where you are in space is known as proprioception, and the nerves that transmit this information are among the fastest in your body. This is because they have two special characteristics that allow them send information very quickly - a large diameter, and a myelin sheath.
Exercise:
A study in the journal Neurons found that capillaries supply oxygen to the brain - while arteries are the main supply routes into the brain, blood ultimately delivers its payload of oxygen to its final destination via a vast web of smaller capillaries, or microvessels, which permeate brain tissue. This phenomenon is unique to the capillaries because of their size - the thin walls of the microvessels mean that the oxygen levels in adjacent brain tissue are mirrored within the capillaries, which can signal to red blood cells to spring into action.
www.urmc.rochester.edu/news/s...
Exercise is known to increase blood flow and oxygen to the skeletal muscles and the brain - so exercise can also affect an individual’s reaction time, since both skeletal muscle and the brain are separately associated with reaction time. With exercise, the sympathetic nervous system is activated and there is an increase in blood pressure and heart rate. Performing any form of cardiovascular training improves your capillary density, which in the long run improves physical fitness and increases cerebral blood flow.
Additionally, exercise causes adaptation within the heart, specifically the left ventricle - essentially, the left ventricle grows. To be specific, the heart wall of the left ventricle expands - this means that with each heartbeat, the heart can pump out more blood since the left ventricle can fill with more blood.
Lion’s Mane & Myelin:
Works in two ways: increases myelination and promotes growth of new neurons. The myelin sheath is a protective covering that surrounds fibers called axons, the long thin projections that extend from the main body of a nerve cell or neuron. The main function of myelin is to protect and insulate these axons and enhance their transmission of electrical impulses. If myelin is damaged, the transmission of these impulses is slowed down. So the main purpose of myelin is to increase the speed at which electrical impulses propagate along the myelinated fiber. Lion’s mane contains two unique types of compounds, hericenones and erinacines stimulate synthesis of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). NGF is a protein that plays a major role in the maintenance, survival and regeneration of neurons in both your central and peripheral nervous systems.

Meditation & Grey Matter:
A study published in Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging, led by Harvard-affiliated researchers found that meditation-produced changes over time in the brain’s gray matter (the darker tissue of the brain and spinal cord, consisting mainly of nerve cell bodies and branching dendrites.)

Tyrosine (Neurotransmitter)
In a study published in Neuropsychologia, 22 subjects with an average age of 21 were given, after overnight fasting and on an empty stomach, 400 milliliters of orange juice with either 2 grams of tyrosine or 2 grams of a cellulose placebo dissolved in the juice. One hour post-consumption they completed a 30-minute cognitive task on a computer called a “stop-signal task” that has been used in previous research and is a measure of reaction time. The subjects then underwent a “washout” period for 7 days and switched supplement groups. The researchers found a significant benefit with tyrosine supplementation to stop-signal reaction time. Specifically, reaction time was, on average, 6.2% faster than the placebo group (214 versus 228 milliseconds)

Love this topic. Reaction time is such a big thing in athletic performance. I appreciate that you broke down the science behind it. Great video sir!
Lee Frey Yes great info. I compete in action pistol and reaction time is key.
I had read some on myelin before but didn’t know about the impact of endurace work on white matter. So many gurus badmouthing aerobic exercise because it decreases testosterone. That’s only part of the picture though. Thomas always goes the extra mile to consider every angle.
Honestly improving my reaction time even makes simple tasks like cooking and cleaning easier. It's just an overall stress reducer

Thomas could you do a video on a full day of macro timing? So a video that scientifically breaks down what macros to eat first, and what combinations are best for digestion, absorption, etc...?
I second this, a full day of eating would also be really helpful. For cutting and bulking (gaining muscle). For IF and not
I love how this guy put so much work and effort into this video. Keep it up 👍🏼
DeLauer deserves an Oscar for that performance at the beginning !
Lol
Anyone just watching this to be cool
Yep
this is one of the most unique youtube subjects I've ever watched...kudos!
Excellent video, very informative and helpful.
Lots of easy to process info here. Thanks!
Interesting! I have seen my reaction time to when I drop things and catch them immediately has inproved lately. I have been doing more HIIT classes and while on the tradmill
This remind me of an old videogame I used to play, snes Mortal Kombat 3, it has a super fast mode where every move was accelerated. After a while of that, when back to normal speed, it seemed to be too slow, even slower than I could remember it to be...for a time at least.
The explanation in the video made me think of that old memory, it was ages ago.
More like this one please. Can you do a video about up and down regulating and any ways in which that relates to keto/insulin resistance?
Excellent content. Scientific, well presented and straight to the point, without being superficial.
I am a musician looking to improve my capacity of improvising in faster tempos, and I ended up here. You were the one who provided the best answers.

By the way, I loved the down-to-earth and one-pointed way you made a case for meditation at the end of the video. Right on!

Thank you.
Awesome video !!
Good to know... i find it interesting that your info bridges science and what at least i consider mystic kinda... med= grey matter density... fasting=autophgy... keep it up bro its appreciated
Good video, Thomas. Meditation is indeed powerful, good that you mention this. Maybe you can study the Wim Hof Method (=intensive breathing, cold water, stretching, exercise ....). As far as I know it is the BEST TECHNIQUE I have practiced in my whole life. It improves your whole metabolism, your cell oxygen saturation, your reaction time, endurance, muscle power....
Can you make a video explaining how to meditate and what it does or can someone tell me it would be much appreciated

Meditation in the Bible is defined as thinking deeply on a subject or reflection on something.

Good video homie. Way to branch out but stay within your scope. I like this. 👌
I remember in college we used to do exercises that would improve reaction time. I'll defo have to check some of these out and try them for myself.

Another great video with some great content! I would like to get your thoughts on using a specific app that will call out various techniques and combinations to perform either a Shadow Boxing or on a heavy bag. Practitioner has to know the techniques and be able to perform them but examples would be jab, cross ,hook or roundhouse kick, sidekick or whatever techniques you choose from the list. I use this app on a regular basis to mix up my workouts and I would think that would help improve reaction time. Anyway thanks again for a great video!
Meditating is cool!
Subbed bro for the effort. God bless ..

Please can you do a similiar video on how to improve memory and how to improve mood/mental health/depression?
The only reason why i watch the explanation on these type of videos is that i feel smarter
Thomas what about electro-stimulation of the nerves? I would think this would train to nerves to be more receptive.
Honestly, I randomly thought of this at 3 am, and you know idek why I'm watching this
Thank You! I suffer from a neurological disease (MS) and am always looking for a natural way to help maybe slow my progression or eliminate the progression... I know you didn't say anything like that in your video, but self experimentation could show some good results. Again, TY
Sorry if it’s rude and I know you commented this 2 years ago but would you mind explaining to what MS means sorry I’m always just so curios

how do YOU meditate?
A little bit off topic, but with all that stuff about lion's tail, does rhat mean it improves nerve function and could it help damaged nerves?
I have to re-watch it to understand
Well can you make a video for people who get really shaken and panicked by some sudden actions or loud sounds like the really lost control of their body for like half a second.
I play a game called for honor, there are timed parrys your need to hit to protect yourself. Parrying a certain attack allows you to land a heavy hit, and a light attack is very fast. High risk high reward type thing. Very hard to parry.
What do you think about athlete X workout program and following a keto diet. Jeff Calvary created it. He suggests eating normal I need fat loss so that's why I want to do keto. Any input would be appreciated

I have a question about reaction times between men and women. While I am aware than the average man has faster RT than the average women, when it comes to improving RT, do they both share the same maximum level cap? Like, can the fastest women be on par with the fastest man?
I want to know if I am writing a story involving a good female swordsman who, in theory, is supposed to be able to take on tough male swordsman.
I'm pretty sure that the "level cap" for men is higher than for women. Can't say for sure tho

Hi Thomas, I love how I feel on keto mainly due to lack of swelling. However I struggle to stay on it for a long time. I’d love to try to rotate between keto and some other diet. Can you please recommend what should I try when I get tired of keto? Thank you!
I work out 5 times a week which 3 of them are weight lifting classes. I’m feeling pretty worn out and thinking that maybe keto doesn’t support the recovery for me? Would the diet rotating help me? Thank you!
I get lile that also so i carb cleanly one day out of the week two times the day it helps i also lift 5 6 times a week.
