I root prune my Japanese Maples so I can keep them in pots. I have done this with fruit trees as well. When I re-pot them every few years I just prune the roots by about 1/3 and re-pot with fresh potting soil in the same pot. I have 3 Japanese Maples I have kept in pots for about 20 years now.
Pamela Groppe does root pruning mean they don’t grow too tall? Does it slow or prevent their physical size? Because I have no possibility to relocate into the ground and the tree would need to stay in the container.
@@user-gi2kq5iu5l nah, I usually prune my plant root. It's not a problem. It's still growing taller every year. But if you prune your root, just let it, don't give them any fertilizer or it will die. Give them after a month. And also you should trim their branch, tree love trim. Sorry for my bad English. Not native speaker 😢
@@priyankahabib8378 yeah, just slice them, just let the big root, it would grow healthier. Trust me. But don't give fertilizer after prune. Wait for a month, then you may fertilize it.
I love how you had the name of the plants on screen while you were planting them. I want to get to know more plants, and just hearing you say the names doesn't help as much as seeing them. So thank you!
I only found your channel 2 days ago & I am loving it, I live in the UK & I love to garden so thank you for so many useful tips, I can't wait now to watch more 🤗
You are such an inspiration Laura! 😊 I am not an experienced garderner but watching your videos teaches me a lot. Thank you so much. May you continue to make more videos. God bless you. 😊😊
GR8 video. I noticed you never speak about the most IMPORTANT thing there is to know about planting anything, a tree, a boat, a rock, a plant etc. The drainage and the holes in the planter. I’m not surprised because most CZcams gardeners always skip right over the essential care of planting in a container.
I planted the same maple in our backyard our first year at our new house. We are in hot summer Sacramento Valley CA so I made sure to keep the roots moist all summer but it didn't look great after summer that first year. It lost a lot of crispy curled leaves and I was worried it may not bud out the next spring but she's on her 4th year here and doing well.
It’s so fun to watch your growth...it’s September 3, 2021 and to listen to you now you are much more comfortable speaking into the camera . This video was shot about 5 years ago and you are speaking soooo fast . Keep up the great work and enjoying your confidence 🤗
absolutely hilarious! you took the words right out of my mouth. I absolutely love Japanese maples. if it doesn't cost me everything in my bank account, I plan on getting me one for my balcony!!!
Beautiful! To tell you the truth, I didn't think that you could fit all the plants in the container but you did and I love the look of it! Great job Laura! Cool editing Aaron! Using the black background! Hugs 💜🌱💜
The tree and the pot are so gorgeous but that under planting seems too full and detracts from the simple beauty of the maple. Of course that's just my opinion and matters not. Love your channel. 👍😊
Lovely tree and great pot. The hosta and annuals really give it a lift and creat a wonderful look. I would be itching to remove the two lowest branches to " lift it's skirt " as we say in the UK. It would give a definition between the tree and under planting. Great video and ideas as always. Thank you Laura and Aaron
Yesterday I saw your video showing your mother's garden. I found it so beautiful.I am also growing trees in pots though with not so much knowledge. Your videos are very interesting and full of knowledge. Thanks.
This is such a fun video. I really like going through the seasons with y'all... I live in North Texas and we basically have just 3 seasons here- cold, hot, and really hot.
Cute_but_dumb your comment just made me smile I live in the UK & we have four seasons spring, summer, Autumn & winter & I can't imagine anything different, but I would like a longer summer that must be wonderful so enjoy your hot weather 🤗
I'm in the UK and I have two fruit trees in 55cm bell pots(separately!) and they do fine. I have a Morello Cherry tree, and a Victoria Plum tree. I've had them both for about 4 years now and they have grown SO much. Last year I changed the compost, and that was a nightmare, and planted some Cyclamens at the bottom. The trees have put out some fruit but they are not mature enough for me to eat yet, but they have gotten bigger with every year that has passed. I have my plants in pots cause I have an open top HUGE south facing patio, I even have a shed out there! ;-) I want to move to a house , so I can put all my many plants in the ground plus buy more! :p
I have a magnolia planted in a pot...15 yrs old, blooms beautifully in the tropics several times a yr not once. ROot pruning is very important once every 2 years or do and replenish the soil.
The first thing I do turning on the computer is to check your channel. Laura you make life so beautiful. Thank you for your teaching and sharing! Thanks to your supportive husband as well : )
I wonder if those plants need any nutrients at all. The positive energy that you radiate with your passion and love for those plants is I think enough.
Absolutely beautiful!!!!! I have grown trees in pots also...I am a zone 6B-7A (MA) our winters can be a bear sometimes......if I know a super bad cold spell is about to hit, I wrap the entire pot with about 3-4 layers of bubble wrap, and the bare tree gets wrapped with a few layers of burlap.....has always worked like a charm....had one spell when the temps went to -20 for 5 days straight.....didn't lose a potted tree. Just have to remember to unwrap the tree once the sub zero freeze passes....
Your flower arrangement with the bloodgood Maple tree looks amazing, don’t know how you fit all the flowers in there lol....I recently just purchased a bloodgood Maple tree 🌳 What a showstopper this thing is I love it.
I LOVE Japanese maples! I have two in pots and two in the ground. All the info. you gave is correct! I follow the same rules for my Japanese maples. Mine in pots are way smaller than that big guy! But I love the underplanting. It looks great!
Can I plant a tree in a container and then submerge/bury the container (with the tree in it) in the ground? The reason for this is because my HOA requires one tree to be planted in the ground (front of house), not exposed pots, and I wanted to keep my tree small and slow growth, without roots spreading underground massively and affecting my home foundation.
Great info on the Japanese maple planting..have several in large pots..I love the under planting, never thought of it LOL so much better than just looking at a tree trunk Thanks for your videos God bless
I need to repot my maple soon. I have to keep in a pot because we are going to move down the line, and I don't want to permanently place it in the grown. I want to take it with me because it is such a striking tree, and my sister gave it to me. Some of the leaves are green, some are pure white or pure cream, and some a pink. It is such a beauty.
Like your content! I have two Bloodgoods that I may need to remove, they are stressed. They have very little shade where they are. I was told they could take the heat. Maybe some heat but they get too much in the afternoon. I live in zone 7. This stationary camera video was perfect for me!
Sweet, I noticed this pot in one of you're videos and was wondering if you kept it outside in the winter. This answered my question. 😊 Thanks for sharing all you do Laura.
I've had a horse chestnut tree in the same pot on the patio for the last 20 years or so? Grew it from a conker and it's about a foot and a half high and doing just fine!
Curious to know how it’s doing? Did it survive winter? I want to plant one but worried if it’ll survive our snow (I’m in Utah). I’m leaning towards planting in a pot to protect more from our winters.
You are very inspiring! Will you eventually have to break that container to get the tree out? It looks like the top of the container is more narrow than the middle.
Winters can be hard on plants in the ground too, I live in zone 4 Minnesota and lost 3 hydrangeas last winter. I will replace them with arborvitae since I have no winter interest items in my backyard.
Hi, I'm so happy I found you on my suggestion list. I love all your landscaping and container ideas. Love the beautiful arrangements you create. Would I be able to use a mix of Potting Mix and Tree and Shrub Mix to a container to plant a tree or shrub?
I have a lovely Tigereye Sumac that just *love* the crooked growth of the branches, the brilliant color of the foliage in the fall, I look forward to bringing some of this tree with when we move to the family farm. I always recommend this tree to others. It won't grow much more than 9ft tall. =) I do love your maple Laura but it won't survive a winter where I live, we get brutal bitter bone biting winds. It's so awful cold. =/
Laura, I am one of ur follower just like d way u guide us on plant arrangement etc . I have seen a lot of flowering plant during this season on ur garden unfortunately i can't have tat much of flowering plant here as I am frm Malaysia ( tropical country ) most of it r leafy plant n produces only a handful of flowers. I like d red flowering plant tat u planted in ur in law Hse in d previous video can't remember d plant name anyway keep up d good work .
Cool idea to plant trees in pots! Thanks for the info on changing out soil for new soil in pots, I just planted a small Alaskan snowball hydrangea in my flower bed outside my house and I’ve noticed holes in the leaves. Maybe slugs? I see lots of rolly pollies in the soil. Do I need to change the soil? Or spray with something? Maybe vinegar? How much should I water it? It gets sun from about 7am to noon. And they’re planted next to some old rose bushes. Thanks 🙏
I bought a bloodgood red maple tree and lately, the leaves are getting crispy looking. It is planted in a spot where day sun and around 4PM shade. When I first planted it looked great. Can you tell me what I can do to save it? Thank you.
I have heard that clay pots can crack over the winter, is that true? If so, are there certain brands or types that don't crack from the winter elements? If there are a lot of pots I want to winter over, I don't think that I have the room In my garage.
Yes I had three, learned the hard way that you are suppose to empty them or move to shelter. Also have large plastic that crack up from the weather as well. What is a girl to do. I don't have time or strength to be moving.
Love that Bloodgood. Have you considered root pruning to extend a tree's life in a container? Sorry, after last winter I no longer expect mild ones. I lost too much (in Seattle) and the replacements are all much hardier than my listed zone. With climate change I just can't trust the weather any more. Cheers!
Gorgeous Laura!! I'm not real experienced at gardening, but I was wondering what and/ or if you put rocks? Under the soil. Or just soil with drainage hole in pot? Thanks!
Great video! Can you under plant an indoor meyer lemon? We roll ours out in the summer months but though it would be fun to under plant with a nitrogen fixer.
Love your channel! I am in zone 10 (Southern CA) and am planning to plant dwarf fruit trees in pots. Does that mean I should be looking for zone 8 fruit trees, not zone 10? I had never heard of that rule before.

Gorgeous!! You can wheel that right on over to my house now :-)))
I am pretty sure it will look better in my backyard 😜..

That looks really nice!
What a cool tree, so beautiful colors :)
Beautiful video also, thanks for sharing it ;)
You are so sweet to share all this info! I use all this info! Thank you.
Beautiful container! Question? Can you give me some information on the beautiful table and pedestal that’s in this video!
Sooo pretty!
Love your videos. Thank you for all the great advice!
What size pot did you use for the Japanese Maple?
Great video. Very interesting and informative! Thank you!
Omg this looks so pretty but can you please make a video about how to make flower arrangements out of the plants in your garden. Pleaseeeeeeeee
Very good info.Thanks.
Beautiful, are those plants around the tree perennials or year round , what kind are those, I like the way you did the arrangements 👍
What is the best potting soil to use in a potted japanese maple?

enjoyed your video
Yes you can. If it is a good idea all depends on may factors.
you didnt clean the dirt behind your pot on the cement...oops my OCD kicking in I guess!!! LOL Love that planter and the tree is fabulous! :-)
