This is great. For all the hype, the good stuff often doesn't have a lot of views.

Sam is like Shakespeare: Making up poems, which he may or may not have derived from others..
Also, the "wood" (Shakespeare's "green world") is where England's persecuted Catholics found refuge when they were taxed almost to death and feared, well, death ... by execution. See for this Claire Asquith (Lady Oxford)'s "Shadowplay", which also shows the radical ways in which Shakespeare reworked the plays (Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, Lear, and many others) he derived from other sources to tell the forbidden tale of these suffering "outlaws".
The "Wood", capital "W" can also represent the wood of the Cross. This would explain the seeming contradiction of the various (especially Catholic) writers' feelings toward it. We Catholics, and Christians, love the Cross. It is the means God used (uses) to open up the way to heaven for us. We are each called to embrace and carry our own crosses. But sometimes, when the crosses seem too heavy, too many, or too brutal, we may consider, with (Shakespeare's) Hamlet, taking up arms "against a sea (or a forest) of troubles, and, by opposing, end them."

But you have to cut down a tree to make a cross.

To me, that does not seem like anti-trees, at all. In fact, it sounds more like Tolkien is saying that he agrees with trees killing people if said people killed trees before that. As Tom noted, once the trees were killed, the other trees became unkind. And naturally so. It sounds like Tolkien is saying, in fact, rightfully so! This would display even more Tolkien's deep love for trees. Indeed, Tolkien wrote in his letters that he cares for trees in the same way other people care for pets.

Funny and beautiful, pity that Tokien didn't write more poetry (and that he wasn't a psychological writer...)
