Canon PRO-300 best paper choices for print quality - fine art media

  • Keith looks at some of his paper choice decisions when printing a colour image on higher quality media on the Canon PRO-300 A3+/13" pigment ink printer.
    Using a thicker paper and considering how the paper colour and paper surface finish all change how your image will be perceived as a print.
    The free Canon PPL print layout software is used along with the correct icc printer profile for optimum results.

    Your content is very educational, thank you for your time and effort. The Canon PRO-300 has a thick paper setting in the printer menu. I tested it and found that the setting has no perceptive negative impact on print quality. I choose to leave that setting engaged to assist in preventing head strikes.

      Thanks - I'm not sure exactly which aspects of the printer it alters, but I've never seen any negative results

      Indeed - see my original PRO-10 review

      I find the usability and paper handling to be decidedly better in the 300
      Print quality is broadly similar

    Hi Keith, thanks for another really helpful video. You may already have a video covering this but I’m wondering if you could cover general printer maintenance, such as paper roller cleaning, bottom plate cleaning and such like. How often should cleaning processes like this be carried out, and what are the sort of problems to look for that could suggest that a clean is needed?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Před 2 lety +3

      Actually - I've never needed to do it on a printer like this.
      Good media selection is key - that and avoiding much borderless printing...
      Borderless sprays ink over the edge, and without a vacuum system it collects on the foam strip. Add ink spray and paper dust together and you get a nasty gunk that can collect on print heads, leaving marks.
      If you really want to mess up the inside of a printer, print borderless on cheap card...
      This article has been updated regularly over the years

    Hi Keith. Thanks for another really useful and detailed video. Your video's really are a bonus for any person looking to get the best results from their home photo printer. I was wondering about your opinion about Manufacturer photo papers. I have a Canon Pro 300 and have been thinking about the pro's and cons of sticking to Canon papers. From your experience, do you think there is any real benefit to sticking with Canon papers or is this just a marketing tactic? I've read differing opinions. Many thanks Keith. Keep up the great work.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Před 2 lety

      Thanks
      Remember that Canon (or Epson) don't make their own papers, and that there are relatively few actual makers ;-)
      The printers will be tested with OEM papers, and you will normally get ICC profiles - so, it's an easy solution.
      However, I've seen some pretty good 3rd party papers - if they come with profiles, or the supplier will make them, then so much the better.
      If you know how to use profiles and they are available, then third party papers are fine. You need to experiment
      Of course, cheap photo paper is well... just cheap paper ;-)

    I'm expecting delivery of a PRO-300 shortly, as my first printer (thanks to the Canon £200 cashback), and currently finding the world of print media a little daunting. A lot of the information online is US focused, so is refreshing to find your videos on this specific printer and being UK-focused with media options. I have mostly taken B&W photos this year that I want to print A3 for display, but also have a bunch of family prints I'm hoping to do at A6 size on an A4 sheet. Will likely pick up a sampler pack so I can experiment.
    As a networking guy, I dislike it when people have separate networks at home, often due to multiple WiFi routers, and indicates double NAT which can cause all kinds of headaches. I do use VLANs for network isolation but that's more intentional. Is it also possible to force the DHCP server to give the same IP to both the Ethernet and WiFi interface (obviously only one can be active) but should solve the issue on the computer of having separate printers. Thanks again for these videos, I'm learning a lot.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Před 5 měsíci

      For the full info on the printer, see the main [written] review at
      www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-pro-300-printer-review/
      I usually suggest to avoid sampler packs until you know how to use the printer with basic media - otherwise, what criteria do you have to judge whether a bad print is the paper's fault or yours... ;-)
      As to the networking issue, so much depends on the DHCP setup... I've not worked in this field for years, so I just use the one interface for a printer

    Hi Keith, thanks for your nice review, do you prefer the canon over the epson counterpart?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Před 2 lety +2

      Ah, it depends...
      Just what you are assuming is the Epson 'counterpart'? There is no direct equivalence. The P700 is a 13" version of the P900, the PRO-300 is not a 13" version of the PRO-1000
      Can I make great prints from them? - yes all. The limitation for almost anyone is likely their printing/editing/photography ability, not the printer (I include myself in this)

    Hi Keith, I've been watching your videos and reading your reviews now for a couple of years. You say that there are only a very few paper makers. Would you happen to know who makes the paper for Hahnemuhle, Canson, or Red River papers? The head of RR told me once when we were corresponding over the edge bends of their paper that their paper was made in Germany . Just wondering. I have learned much from you and i enjoy your videos very much.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Před 2 lety

      Yes - there are relatively few (specialist paper coaters), but a lot of my info was given in confidence from industry contacts, so I can't share it. You can tell a lot from the top/cover sheet in a box. Similarly, if I get a roll of paper where the cover paper is stuck with green tape, my first thought is that Innova supplied it - whatever the box says...
      RR is a US brand, so I don't know their products
      However here's one that makes a lot of papers

    Hi Keith, thank you for this video. At about the 13 1/2 minute mark, when you are discussing the effect of paper brightness on blue hue, does the brighter paper make it look more blue or more magenta?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Před rokem +1

      if there are OBAs present, the light they emit varies with the exact paper and the light illuminating the paper. The general effect is a blueness, but it can move into a more violet tint depending on the paper/light.
      It also depends on any ink on the paper - the results are an interaction of all these factors

    Hi Keith, I was wondering if you have found any issues in printing A3 borderless prints on the Pro 300? I have a Pro 300 and was trying to print a borderless A3 photo on Fotospeed Platinum Etching paper (285gsm) and the Pro 300 will simply not print it borderless. It throws up an error warning saying that the print must have a border. I notice that the photo that you printed had a border, (by choice) but can the same photo have been printed borderless? I was using the rear tray as this was forced on my by the Pro 300. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Tony (I am using the Canon Print & Layout software)

    • @KeithCooper

      Borderless does depend on the media type [and slot] - see the mentions in my main [written] review
      www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-pro-300-printer-review/
      I used the top slot with a different media setting IIRC
