ESPN put this rest. Google Nicklaus wins 'greatest player of all time' debate over Tiger, hands down. Source ESPN. In 50 years, people will see Nicklaus 18 Majors Woods 15. If a golfer ever wins 11 majors are they going to be asking, will the field play 0.8% worse or will he be the man to break Jack's major championship records? These will not be asterisks in the record books.

Like, sure, if you can point to the specific golfer who couldn’t afford to go on tour that actually could have had a better career than Tiger, and provide evidence to back it up, then we can talk. But Tiger has dominated at every level of play, so the odds that there is someone who COULD have been better but didn’t make it is, well, pretty low. Even then, until you can provide the example, it’s a hypothetical that has no bearing on the GOAT debate.

That’s not an indictment of Tiger. The only leaderboard that matters is the one on the 72nd hole. It just says that Tiger’s peers never put pressure on him on a Sunday and he never put pressure on them. He dominated in an era of chokers. Jack dominated in an era of legends. All of these reasons never qualified anyone for the GOAT status, they were invented in a post Wood's failed to catch Nicklaus world. Reason 1 = 0. Sam Snead was never called the GOAT with 82 wins, for it was Jacks 18. 2. Reason #5, belongs to Jack, do the research. In 1988 they started to calculate adjusted scoring average, something irrelevant to what made Nicklaus that GOAT. Reason 3, How long he was ranked #1, MEANS = 0. Luke Donald was ranked #1 for over a year and never won a major, and there are golfers than won a major, like Ye Yang, that were never ranked in the top 20. Was never a benchmark, reason or consideration for what ranks as the GOAT. Reason 2. Players play 0.8 % worse when he played? Since when was that a benchmark for qualifying for the GOAT? Why did you skip these stats? Oh, they still belong to Jack.. anyone can cherry pick out things .. Nicklaus holds the record for most runner-up finishes in majors with 19… Nicklaus holds the record for most top-five finishes in major championships with 56.,,,, Nicklaus holds the record for most top-10 finishes in major championships with 73…. Nicklaus finished in the top-10 in his final three professional major championships as an amateur… Nicklaus holds the record for most top-10 finishes at Augusta with 22, as well as cuts made, with 37. He also holds the record for wins with six, and runner-up finishes with four…. For his career, Nicklaus has 68 finishes of seventh or better at majors…. From the 1970 Open Championship to the 1978 Open Championship, Nicklaus finished outside the top 10 just twice in majors…. Google Tiger Woods Won't Pass Jack Nicklaus: How His Inevitable Failure Unfolds from 2010, if those 5 reasons were relevant, why are there a ton of articles pre 2018 calling Wood's career an Inevitable Failure? When Jack was Labeled the GOAT was it for those 5 reasons? These ALTERNATE reasons are only being said and found in a POST Woods will not break Nicklaus world. Question for up & coming 18 year old golfer, What is your career goal? Will his answer be A: To be the most competative in tounamanets I didn’t win.. B: To have other golfers play 0.8% worse than I play.. or C. To break Jack Nicklaus major championship record? Stop moving the goalposts and stop crying in your Cheerios, he failed. Listen to Tiger's own word when asked.. Tiger, would you trade your 82 PGA Tour wins and 15 majors for 70-something wins and 19 majors? Tiger Woods: Yes. Woods would rank himself second for a simple reason.
Tiger also said in 2012, 'I am four majors back,' he said. We can pull out the stats of the records that Dan Marino still holds, guess what... see how far that gets you in the GOAT debate with Brady.
