  • I almost lost my slingbag with my camera inside while riding on a highway. That's why I dislike fidlocks.

This video is not sponsored nor did I receive any money. While I sometimes get bags for free, I have to pay custom fees, shipping fees and all my videos have lots of production costs (e.g. software and musicrights). Therefore I invest my own money into all of these videos and I have no intention to be biased towards a product or company. HOW I REVIEW:
As you might know from my „How I make a buying decision“ video: Rather than just looking at the pros, I like to evaluate the cons or flaws of an item and then evaluate if I can live with them. That is why in my video reviews I concentrate more on the cons of an item rather than going over all the features. Therefore everything shown is just a fraction of all the points that go into the verdict and score of an item.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A QUICKLOOK AND A REVIEW:
A Quicklook usually covers pre-production units or items that I only used for a short period of time. While Reviews cover final items that I have reviewed intensively.
    LINKS:
For all my videos I decided not to include links for the products. Everyone is living in different countries and therefore has to deal with different shipping and customs fees. That is why I would advice everyone just to Google the product within their country to find the best deals. For instance: I live in Germany, It wouldn’t make sense to give you a German link while you might be living in USA or Asia. I hope that is understandable.

I agree with you on all points. There are some points (maybe sternum strap on a backpack) where I am fine with them. The v-buckle are the best and I like to replace other styles with the v-buckle when I can.

I respectfully disagree with your suggestion about brands not using fidlock. There are plenty of hardware options out there. I think the specific issue you and many others are facing is brands choosing the wrong buckle for their particular use case. The snap or slide is great for something like a sternum strap, where ease of use is important, but security when being handled is less critical. With countless options available, manufacturers need to consider the qualities and functions of a buckle rather than just how it looks, otherwise you can end up with a bag which can unbuckle itself when being moved, or a buckle so inconvenient that you would rather take the bag off over your head.

fidlocks/magnetic hardware are great for compression straps and sternum straps. I think they work great as a belt buckle as well since they're super fast to undo when you have to remove your pants.

To be fair, the Fidlock craze also led to designers pretty much „overusing“ them. I mean, what do you need a buckle on the top of a laptop compartment for?

I am glad you brought up this point. As an user experience architect I always pay close attention to my interactions with the products I use and fidlocks to me are fiddly. They don't always work as intended each and every time. Whereas I've never had a problem with Duraflex clasps and the interaction is always consistent. Even with the V buckle on my MW Spar, it takes extra focus to ensure the buckle is latched properly and more times than not I need to watch what I am doing however the Duraflex clasps I can do without looking without fail. It is tried and true.

Thanks for sharing this video. Was about to order my first sling bag and it comes with a fidlock - but it’s a v buckle style, so I’m not as worried!

Anyone knows if there are other fasteners on the market that are easier to close/open than regular buckles but not as easy as Fidlocks? And the ones that are... elastic or won't take up that much space on the strap?

I just got an Alpaka sling, and it uses Maglockz instead. Kinda similar to Fidlock, and they use fidlock on other stuff as well. The buckle on the strap is a slider and I would see it being really hard to accidentally undo, although it is easy to undo with one hand if you are trying. I also don't have much issue with having to adjust it on my back in the first place, but when I slide it around to grab something it is very secure and not an issue. But using the buckle does seem to make removing the bag more awkward, rather than easier sometimes. Mostly I just remove it or put in on overhead. But it has come in handy if I am wearing a lot of layers and it the bag is packed out. The buckle can be sometimes easier. Nice to have, but not necessary, kind of thing.

I recently bought a day sling 3 and city sling 2. I love them and was hyped for my first fidlocks bags, they’re so cool but I also know I don’t feel secure using them. I use my chrome laden for biking now lol

So I do owned a Black Ember Forge with it's maglock (which serve the same purpose as fidlock), I noticed the compression straps sometimes will undo themselves when I hit onto something. lol

I whole heartedly agree. The more I use them, the more i dislike them. I will not use them for a strap closure on a sling, for the exact reason you state. As pocket/pouch/compression/ sternum strap….. they always close themselves when you don it want them too. It’s always annoying when you go to toss in your pack, and the next thing you know…. You’re tied in a knot because the sternum strap closed itself. Or you get stuck to a magnetic whiteboard….. I’ll take some nice, working, old reliable clips.

  • @1partgeek

You confirmed my concerns with Fidlock buckles. So for me, I reserve Fidlocks for sternum straps on my EDC backpacks - NBD if I accidentally unbuckle it while wearing right. For motorcycle use, I go with the classic snap buckles only - very secure and you could still technically release it with 1 hand. Great video as always!

I’ve learned not to grab and pull on the lock itself when I swing my bags around

Agree with you on the shortcomings. It needs to go back to the drawing table so to design in a safety catch, which could be as simple as the catch tab to turn 90 degrees and fit into a holding slot, as opposed to just hanging free. The way we utilize them is with straps that go under the clothing just below the belt line, to hold flat money bags.

I finally relented and bought a sling bag with fidlocks but agree 100% that one should not attribute to them the same level of security as traditional closures. For my travels (motorcyclist included) they are not a replacement for other locking mechanisms. In fact, the speed of unlocking is undermined by the worry they will open at the worst possible time.

  • @alexanderslee

Having a Fidlock on a shoulder strap of a sling bag containing delicate valuables such as a camera while riding on a motorcycle is sheer user negligence.

  • @briangal87

Don't have many fidlock mechanisms in my arsenal but I do own a AER City Sling 2 that I have had for about 2 years now. Have traveled internationally for the past 2 Years and have to say I have never had a problem with that certain Fidlock mechanism. I love this sling and have used it running, bicycling, walking. Goes everywhere I go. Some Fidlocks are designed well while others not so much. Only way to know if its designed well is to do some research and to try it yourself!

  • @mirrorsmarked1497

To be honest, the sound is too big when I close my messenger bag flap which two fidlock v buckle on it's flap, especially in quiet places like library.

  • @zerousen

I like the slider line of fidlocks, in my experience they are a lot more reliable and not very prone to accidental detaching compared to other styles.

Excellent points. Thank you. I didn't realize these things, especially while riding.
