- BaofengTech BTECH 50X3 Triband - This radio has be out for some time, and I wanted to do some power testing and an unboxing with it before installing it into my truck. It will be the radio I use for 220MHz mobile communications, once I get the vehicle install done.

I’m about to pull the trigger and order one. I am hopeful for a follow up showing that the receiver is better that the Verotel. Eagerly awaiting the video of the mobile rig!
The most important question was never asked. Are they reliable? Good/bad quality and so forth. Anyone have information?
Enjoyed your video. Remote / display reminds me (some..) of my ole ICom IC2820.
Yep. Thanks for commenting.
Good video, thanks, interesting rig
Thanks for watching!
I just bought it works good
Unboxing videos answer one question better than spec sheets usually answer it: "What's in the box?"
True!
Mi Pregunta es, Si vale la pena comprar la radio o hay mas marcas con mejoras Gracias y lo felicito por su programa de ayuda aquí aprendemos los que estamos iniciando en la Radio afición Bendiciones
Thanks for the video been searching for a yaesu ftm 350 for while stumbled across this, I'm curious to know your thought? I searched your channel couldn't find the 5 mobile installs did I over look it? Work in progress??
Thanks for the review. Can you show us more of the install in your truck? I am getting ready to upgrade from a HT in the truck to a real mobile, looking for ideas. What antennas are you running on the truck?
Yes, I am working on a multi-part video for that.
This radio is a copy of my Yaesu FTM 350 which I use in my Jeep.
Basically, yes. But the FTM350 isn't made any longer
I love Lido Mounts...
Hello from the UK, always lovin' your vids I especially like the DMR shirt that you wear. Can you advise where to get these?
Yes you can get these at shop.hamradio2.com
I'll have a think about that one as it's $21 for the T Shirt $38 to post it to the UK.
@@cwoodalluk agreed. Shipping to the UK is ridiculous. If you know of a better option, I'm interested in hearing it.
hiya, fresh ham here from au here and looking to scan frequencies . got the info to join local club.. in a country town in the desert (flat land makes for distance lol) old hat at the cb/uhf/vhf radio. learning ham is quite a jump. got the baufangs.. and just got the uv25x4, seems the x4 was a hinderance to the leaning curve. the meterage is still to be perceived. however hang the radio and understanding repeaters and such aint my first thing ... its scanning and listening. Think this would be a great singular post.. scanning gives one the ability to listen and find emergency services.. then one can 1scan channels 2 find a channel 3 save a channel 4 set up a list of channels to scan. this is my first time listening to you. so if you made on would be fantastic to set up a link for this simple instruction...
Did you ever try using this with the AMP220? I already have the Amp and Im considering buying this radio to use with it. Im curious if it works. Can you do an update video for this radio on its durability? Thanks for the info!
Any update on the icom ic-705???🥺🤔...... the unboxing are very helpful 💯💯💯
Thanks for the comments. I am hearing "August" for the IC-705
I would like to see a CHIRP upload for this radio. I have one but find it frustrating that the radio rounds down frequencies entered. If I key in 146.580 it shows as 146.575
What is the "Line In" jack for??? Is it for an external audio input source...other than a mic input???
Will this radio play GMRS channels? It looks like it's within the range.
These seem to be going for $379-$399 presently. The Icom 5100a is $399 right now. Which would you recomend?
How big is the fan? If I want to replace it with a Noctua for example...
I just installed this radio and when testing with the SWR meter (Youmei RS-50) I am only getting about 22-34W on UHF, I have it set to high power...any idea why this might be? On 2m I am getting 55W+ I'm very new to this, I have a Comet CA-2X4 NMO antenna but I'm not sure where to start looking
Well this seems like a fairly old Video, by now is the video out with the Mobile installation of this radio in particular but showing all of your heads from other radios as well?
Is there a radio like this that is also part 95 compliant?
I'm running a 50x3, my main gripe is that it throws up an error and locks up, if you don't wait for the repeater to completely drop before keying up. Pain in the ass for a $300+ radio.
That sounds like a setting that could be changed. I will do some testing on that, thanks for commenting.
Jason, that would be awesome if you could find a work around. I'm a "Golden Gabber" and it makes net check ins a very deliberate endeavor.
Are you still having this issue? I was wondering if a firmware upgrade has corrected?
Still locks up if I key up too quickly. It would be great to find a fix. It is a fine radio otherwise.
Love your vids, but i am anxious to see review after you use a month. Lots of complaints about poor speakers and poor speaker out jack to external. Pretty pricey if you dont need 220
Thanks, I do plan to make another video after running it mobile for a while. Honestly if you do need 220, another radio might be better anyway. With only 4-5 watts out, this isn't my first choice, but I am choosing to use it because A) I already have it B) I really like the screen on it and C) I want to run some tests on it and on the 220 Amp that BTECH makes, which I also already have. So this is a good opportunity to try all of those things.
Is this a super heterodyne style reciever in this radio?
That would be great if the data port can be used to send and receive data modes. I love the big screen! I have the Anytone 578 about the same as that radio with much smaller screen! I don't think any of them will do the digital modes! I think that all radios should be able to do digital modes! If you are not doing digital on that band now you will soon! Winlink is on most bands now and will be on all bands soon!! THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION!
Thanks for commenting.
My Question I have is this, is the 50x3 Repeater capable?
HOWDY sir, I was wondering if you may do a video pertaining to GMRS. I am presently studying to upgrade to a General ticket. I love my armature radios and look forward to expand on that.(Provided I can grasp the electronic principles) portion. back to my question, I also hold a GMRS license, but curious as to what you think about GMRS. I personally simply enjoy radios.73 KD5LDE
So this is a GMRS/HAM combination?
GMRS-50X1 and UV-50X2 UV-50X3 is all the same radio with software mods
i really like mine set up as a base works great, only complaints that i have is going thru the menu it locks up sometimes when programing repeaters or changing settings and i have to start over, sometimes several times. i also got the btg-6600a which is a bluetooth set up with gps ant directly from contacting btech sales for@79$ i have used it for aprs, which is not working well .really need more info on it. i do like the radio. just wish you could update the firmware. Do you have any updates on this radio? thanks KO4IAH
Hi Jason. If you have a direct contact at Btech can you ask if the Bluetooth TNC btg50x3a1 mentioned in the back pages of this radios manual ever came out or ever will? I know I can buy a KPC-3 and plug it in but if it is a cheap add on and does KISS mode it might be good. Ohh. BTW. Did you see this radio has EXTERNAL PA output?! Find a waterproof speaker! I had a FTM-350 fully loaded for a short time when they came out and the feature I wish worked on this was the optional voice board. It was not at all like the new crop of "Talking" radios. It actually was useful. I think the same module goes into an FTM-400.
I can ask about the BT TNC. No, I didn't notice about the External PA, sounds like a CB feature, lol. I may try it though since I am putting the radio in my truck.
Ronny, I got a reply back that you can contact BaofengTech directly and order that BT TNC from them. I am going to order one myself for testing and videos.
I am curious, how did this radio perform and what antenna did you pair it up with?
So far, so good, but I am doing further testing in the mobile unit with it
I think I did send this before if not please forgive me.
My post was for you, I said before you put your 50x3 radio in your truck make sure that the
skip mode works.
Because I used the RT software and it will not work on my 50x3 radio.
So on this radio, is there a way to have an increased frequency range? Meaning, the radio out of the box will only scroll freq’s in .25 intervals. I.E., 146.125, 146.150, 146.175, etc. is there a way to transmit and receive on 146.155? or 146.140?
Yes, full open TX between 144-148 mhz
What size would you say the ball on the mount is? I'm looking to have a Ram Mount set-up.
17mm
Be cool if the input was for other radios with different frequencies
Line in I mean :)
I'm considering getting this radio. My BTECH UV-50x2 died :(
Naturally I have all the cables, etc. Can you run this radio on a Dual-band antenna (specifically this one: Tram 140MHz-170MHz + 430MHz-470MHz Dual Band NMO Antenna) or does it require a 3-band antenna (using it primarily on 2 meter, MURS and sometimes 440)
You can use a dual band antenna as lone as you don't use it on 220. It will work fine.
Hey 👋 me and my pop want to see your mobile ham radio setup!!!!!! Can you please make a video on it. 🎉🎉. Thanks 🙏 😊
Yeah I need to do that, LOL. I keep changing it...
@@HamRadio2 yeah dude 🎉🎉. I really like this radio. Main reason is that Orange is my favorite color. 😂😂😂
What's the frequency range?
I like the unboxing Vids keep them up. KM4ZRT
Thanks, will do!
I just picked up a couple of radios and I am trying to program them with Chirp but I didn't have Chrip so my problem is I can't download chrip I go to the download but there is no link for download
There's a chirp support page you can check. I'm seeing the download link when I look
@@HamRadio2 ok I'll send them a message I appreciate your help
This is a close clone of the Yaesu FTM-350, which, like many other Yaesu radios, was discontinued when Yaesu should have just updated it.
Yep. It's probably not as good as the Yaesu either
Could this radio be able to be used to talk to my local Skywarn and Monitor my local Dispatchers and talk to my fire dept if needed?
Yes Julius, yes it can.
Does the fan run all the time or only when there is a big load on it?
Hard to remember - I think only when there is a load, so basically when it is keyed.
Can you point me in the best HT radio when money is not a object. If you could only chose one what one would it be?
I’ve had my eyes on the FT3DR
Rfb1jason has one
The FT3D or the D74 are my top choices.
@@HamRadio2 thanks for responding I will look into the two radios. Hopefully Amazon will restock so I could help you and your channel out in support as for right now they say sold out😒
By the Amazon reviews there is bad customer service with this company. It would be great to see videos that show us an experience with these companies customer service experiences.
Thanks, I will look into that.
How do you plug the power in as a base station inside your home?
Use a power supply
@@HamRadio2 For a computer desktop? Good thinking. Thanks.
@@JoshuaXiong only if that computer desktop has positive and negative poles on it. I have seen some modified that way.
But more like this - www.gigaparts.com/astron-ss-30m-ap.html
Wish it did DMR
Me too.
Any knowledge on performance an distances on these thinking of buying one
I'll be doing some testing soon
@@HamRadio2 Would like to see results also. Have Btech HH and its great. Debating on icom or Yaesu, or btech?
Retevis RT85
Will this talk to Cb radios
No
OK so where do you buy one
Links are in the Description.
The lower part of the display looks to be poorly adapted to the frame. Should be worth mentioning in a review.
Doesn't look that way to me
How is the radio holding up?
So far, so good
I look and may have overlooked it but did you ever do a follow-up on the radio's performance. I'm considering upgrading from a little 25 watt radio to that one possibly. Yes I'm fully aware that they make better radios but not looking to spend a fortune on a decent radio. I was hoping you could do a video or give me a comment on how you feel about the biotech 50x3
this works for 2 m and gmrs
Yeah but it's not Part95
@knucklehead d That can be said about hundreds of radios. What makes this one different?
@knucklehead d I can't honestly tell if you are bashing it or a fan of it. Everything you are saying is just a repeat of what I already said. Bottom line - it is a good radio and I use mine on a regular basis.
@knucklehead d Gotcha, ok. I just wasn't following what you were saying, sorry. Thanks for commenting.
Have you ever tested this 220 radio: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007T4L23E/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza
Yes. Hard to program, but it works well.
I looked at this one and thought a Baofeng radio for over $300?
BaofengTech, not Baofeng. 2 separate companies.
I've owned the Btech -5x3 for 3yrs and have beaten the heck out of it I mean dropped battery falls out many times water splashes.i just slap it back to gether and runs fine .Btech are here in US 73📻☕🤗
It's pronounced "Bow-fung" not "BA-O-Feng". It means something like "strong wind".
Yes I have mentioned this in several videos
Vtech
You never commented on how it didn't do 50w on 2m?? 35w is a long way from 50w, I enjoy your videos but please don't turn them into a paid commerical, it's very obvious this one was,
I was wondering about that, too. Two or three watts is one thing but the VHF output was WAY off what it's rated for.
I've never been paid for a review of any radio. If I missed something you'd like to see, feel free to ask. I probably just didn't comment on this one. But assuming there is some kind of ulterior motive isn't accurate either.
That's not the correct way to pronounce Bao.
Underpowered... Overpriced.
