- The Music at the beginning sounds like Batman is going to be in this. Sorry he's not in this one.
The Largest Forest Fire in U.S. History burned its way into the South and East sides of Wallace Idaho on August 20th - 21st, 1910. For 36 hours this fire burned an area as large as the State of Connecticut. A 29 year old by the name of Arthur Fay, with his wife Mabel, and two small children, Adelaide and Clark, witnessed the events of that summer.
In the late 1950's, at the age of 73, Arthur recounted those events the best he could. Although he, his wife, and children escaped, he never returned to Wallace. This is his account of that hot, dry, summer (much like the one we have today in 2015).
This presentation of HWPS and Auggie Dog Productions is to remember the event and honor all those families and fire fighters who lost their lives and the men, women, and children who had their lives changed. This one fire forever shaped how forest fires are fought.
Although this is an abridged account, and sound and voice manipulation was used to drive the narrative and make this more entertaining, we have been careful to keep the original intent and feeling of his thoughts (the best we could).

Thank you so much for sharing this beautifully made ,straight forward with good audio! Just perfect!
That old footage is incredible. Thanks for making and sharing this
If you drive through Moon Pass, You can still see huge stumps and snags of the remains of the burnt trees. I have never heard an eye witness account before! Let us not forget Ranger Pulaski. I am going to take the kids to see the mine where they hid. It is outside of town, going up the canyon where Arthur lived on King street. (Entrance to Moon Pass) I believe it is about a mile hike to the mine.
What a great production! It gives me more appreciation to those who fought this fire in 1910. Thanks again! Dave.
Awsome piece of history.! I
Another great video! Thanks. Always look forward to seeing what is coming next so keep them coming.
The Big Burn was also known as the Big Blow Up. A book of the same title with a copyright of 1955 can be found in some old book stores.
The steam locomotive that was stuck in the tunnel is the N.P. 1356 it is preserved in downtown Missoula it has an amazing story of its own.
he was talking about was my adoptive grandfather. My adoptive father was John Boyd who was the fire chief at the time. It was his father who passed away going back after the pet parrot.
I have a new appreciation for this fire. What a terrifying event....
