F-117 Nighthawk Shootdown over Serbia, 1999 - Animated

- During the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, a USAF F-117 Nighthawk stealth aircraft conducts a strike mission into Serbia. Notably difficult to detect on radar, the commander of a Serbian Surface to Air Missile battery knows the Nighthawk is coming, but the aircraft's stealth technology "should" make the engagement almost impossible.

The total humiliation of the US air force and their "stealth" aircraft.
I have to give respect to the guy commanding the SAM battery. That's a great example of using your strengths against and enemy's weakness and not giving up just because you're outgunned. It's awesome the the he and the pilot both survived the war and remain friendly. Nothing personal, just two professional soldiers doing their duty to the best of their abilities.
Honestly if he had been armed with a stopwatch and a slingshot I think he had the determination and the US the complacency to take down the stealth fighter
What's happening right now over at Eastern Europe is a testament to that.

That is how war is supposed to be. Just equippment destroyed, with minimal deaths. And reconciliation afterwards.
This is an example of why stealth is not an excuse to just get lazy when executing strikes in a contested environment. The combination of factors leading up to this shoot-down, like flying the same corridors over and over an the lack of EW, lead the SAM operator to get the jump on the F-117 (props to that guy). Stealth should be used in conjunction with other techniques to increase the survivability of aircraft.
OTOH, one should not use this incident as an example of stealth being worthless.

It’s not the job of mainstream media to go into this level of detail. This is for aviation geeks, like us. Furthermore, there were so many different stories about this incident at the time, they could only go with what the most credible source was telling them. The F-117 was still a pretty closely guarded aircraft at that time so few people who knew anything about it were likely to be talking, especially since this was a moment of some embarrassment.
The rumours on the internet at the time were far worse. I remember a couple of irate and rather self-righteous Americans posting that the Air Tasking Order had been given to the Serbs by ‘the duplicitous French’.
"so you're the guy who shot me down?" "Yep" "cool let's be friends!" 😂
Touched the wing of this very jet that was shot down when visiting Belgrade last September, they have it on display in the Aeronautical Museum with some other parts. Quite an incredible story to this day.
As have I. That air museum is completely fantastic and you can literally walk to it after you clear customs. They also have a Tomahawk which I've sat on! I've been there 3 times with people who visited me. All were really impressed though it's a pity that they don't clean the building.

One more important thing to add: The sizes and shapes of the F117 was more or less public - This is why commander Zoltan Dani was able to fine-tune the radio locator to the aircraft. (He was investigating on the plane from '98 onward, he calculated the necessary frequencies to monitor it and he did the frequency-altering without permission on one of his radar's frequency. After that his SAM battery was able to follow the F117's when those were in range).
Zoltan was nowhere near to his unit. Actual radar tracking and missile launch was done by Djordje Anicic and his colleagues. Zoltan was accredited with this kill only because he was commanding officer. Find book SMENA ( Shift) by Djordje Anicic and find the truth.

I remember Wesley Clark, and his "collateral damage" phrase, every time they shot civilians.
They even bombed an open-air marketplace, full of people buying groceries, and with cluster munitions. But it's fine cos NATO is a defensive alliance.. from wiki:
The bombing caused damage to bridges, roads and railway tracks, as well as to 25,000 homes, 69 schools and 176 cultural monuments.[180] Furthemore, 19 hospitals and 20 health centers were damaged, including the University Hospital Center Dr Dragiša Mišović.[181][182] NATO bombing also resulted in the damaging of medieval monuments, such as Gračanica Monastery, the Patriarchate of Peć and the Visoki Dečani, which are on the UNESCO's World Heritage list today.[183] The Avala Tower, one of the most popular symbols of Belgrade, Serbia's capital, was destroyed during the bombing
As for that bomb bay door narrative, which has been widely accepted and told again and again. I don't know how do you justify the second one hit?
again wiki:
American sources state that a second F-117 was targeted and damaged during the campaign, allegedly on 30 April 1999. The aircraft returned to Spangdahlem base, but it supposedly never flew again. However, the USAF continued to use the F-117 during Allied Force
"Collateral damage" is an outdated term. We call them 'Insurgents' now.
Exactly. It is a collateral damage when NATO does it but it is a genocide and a war crime when someone else does it.
What some people in the comments session forget, is that it was a command decision that the same flight paths be flown.
The F-117 also participated in the second invasion of Iraq, and today is apparently a LO/VLO test/"aggressor" aircraft.
in my opinion it was shot down because they were surprised with a snick attack by serbian SAM battery, which was not position in any formation or protecting any specific object so they did not expect to be shot at from that position, with all SAM Yugoslavia could protect only around 30% of their territory and Yugoslav aircrafts were not serviced and pilots without any experience so USA did not feel threaten by that

I always wondered how the Serbs were able to bring down a nighthawk. Very interesting video, as usual. You should do another for the Battle of Cape Matapan as well!

Worked for a while with the guy that was his wingman that mission - he was generally tight lipped about the incident, but did say that that was the third consecutive night flying the exact same profile. He also told a tale of an epsiode of losing IFF near Aviano, and opening the bay doors so radar could see them.
On a visit in Germany, also got a chance to speak to former East German SAM operators, that related that the radars were not their only trick - and when the attack angle/route of the targets was known of surmised. they often used visual tracking before turning on the trackers at the last moment, when it was too late for the targets to evade. They mentioned that it was one of their highest percentage tactics (exercise scoring).
Optical targeting is becoming increasingly sophisticated and capable. AI monitoring huge camera networks and flagging items of interest in live video feeds is already a thing. Optical sensors can see quite far under some conditions. Could soon be a more challenging environment for stealth aircraft.
They wait airplane to came in cone of 15 to 10 km from SAM battery, in that zone there is no way to escape missile, now they use Pantcirs but tactic is the same, old S125 got new thermovisions for passive scanning the sky.
Bay doors were never opened. That is a USAF LIE to justify a clean shot. And it was the second night not the third. Again deliberate lie.
We are truly *_sorry_* since *_we didn't know it was invisible_*
Very well presented. I can confirm that SAM operator was obsessed with catching stealth aircraft to the point that he was consulting on several occasions with the actual engeneer of his SAM battery in Russia seeking advice. They had a documentary about it with both man (they also became friends). Happy for the pilot and glad they are freinds too. Real military professionals have mutual respect. May all troops be safe🙏
Story of Zoltán Dani and his team is an excellent one! He makes hungarians and serbians equally proud.
Hmmm you got me intrigued... i will find the book.
No, it makes us embarrassed. This guy and most others targeted mostly civilians on their way to work, at hospitals, tv stations, killed children sitting on their little stool pots. They couldn't really get the military because it was hidden in forests and underhill forest bunkers. So anyway, this guy didn't loose anyone so it was ok for him to befriend someone killing his neighbors. Shows a certain Serbian lack of character and respect for himself as well as others (which is something Serbs are known for, except being stupidly righteous)

I remember watching the US network coverage of the footage from the crash site as the fire still burned. Immediately knew for sure it was an F-117 from the distinct sawtooth outline of the cockpit front edge backlit against the fires. Nothing else of the world has that.
Being in a stealth airplane of fighter jet doesnt mean you are inivisible. When I was reading and reading a lot of this stuffs how radars work and stealth works I was already know that you cant be invisible to radars. You just cant do it. Your aircaft shape, design, altitude etc etc can make it hard to track you and lock on you, but you will never be invisible.
This shows how important the Prowler was when it was in service. Highly underrated aircraft and it doesn't fly for the Air Force.
All things considered it was probably a mistake for the US Air Force to retire the EF-111 Raven so early.
@Natan Irrelevant nonsense.
but, it was not so needed because the radars were always off... Only when they knew that there was an airspace breach (Anti-Air people who served told me that they could tell by the sound it the plane is coming at you or is making a turn or whatever.. The radars were allowed to be turned on for 18 seconds to aoid detection. The Anti-Air part of the army had insignificant losses and there was hardly a piece of movable equipment hit. In fact, they were all dummies and NATO found that out after boasting of hundreds of tanks and other vehicles hit. That hurt so they turned to civilian targets because they had to justify it all somehow. When the first peacekeepers entered Serbia, they reported 16 tanks destroyed.. Serbia to comply and leave the territory that was internationally recognized as Serbian sovereign territory.
I donlt know how do you justify the second one hit?
again wiki:
American sources state that a second F-117 was targeted and damaged during the campaign, allegedly on 30 April 1999. The aircraft returned to Spangdahlem base, but it supposedly never flew again. However, the USAF continued to use the F-117 during Allied Force.

I remember when this happened, didn't believe it until I saw the wreckage of the plane on television. Contrary to popular belief, stealth aircraft are not invisible, just incredibly difficult to detect.
As long as the weapons bay/landing gear doors remain closed, they are indeed difficult to detect.

The biggest obstacle to success is thinking and attitudes that become stagnant. The doors on the F-22 open and close very quickly, not sure if the F-35 is as quick.

The fact that an Old Soviet Radar could detect a Stealth Bomber is just insane.
P 18 radar was made in 1970 while S-300 was introduced in 1978. 44 year old Soviet S-300 system is similar to US Patriot air defense system that is still in use by USA in 2022, it puts things into perspective. P-18 radar was only 13 years older than the US stealth bomber.

Even that "old obsolete hardware" can still be a real threat when you put it in the hands of the rare guy who knows its ins and outs like the back of his hand, and even has a few of his very own tricks up his sleeve. The accounts I've read of the shootdown all state that Dani's battery drilled constantly and were on the top of their game, commanded by that rare guy that knows exactly how to use their gear. The obsessive level to which Dani's crew studied their NATO targets and had their own radar tunings for detecting hard to track aircraft, shows that he took his job as their commander very seriously.
Fantastic job again!
Always look forward to new installments!

Trust me, it wasn't. Basically, Serbian army didn't want to engage. Land there is flat, you could see choppers from miles, could be easily downed. But army got order to not engage and let them pick up guy.
Biggest worry for Serbian security services was if some drunken farmers got hold of the pilot, so pretty much buffer zone was made for US search and rescue teams and they were not interfered in rescuing the pilot.

I continually find it amazing how soldiers from opposing sides are able to meet up after the war and become friends.
It's typically not personal (unless one side engaged in atrocities). And they have a shared experience.
Soldiers usually don't hate other soldiers. Whichever side they are on, orders are orders. Both of these guys was just doing their job.
Opposing soldiers on a battlefield have much more in common with each other than either of them has in common with the top command who sent them there.
