Dan Forshaw is one of the most passionate and charismatic musicians on the British Jazz scene. Born in Blackpool, Lancashire, Dan studied in both London and New York and has played all over the world with many different ensembles ranging from jazz quartet’s to cathedral choirs. He is one of the UK’s leading experts on John Coltrane and has written a number of published articles on the music and theology of ‘Trane’. Tim Price, Professor of saxophone in New York and a former teacher of Dan said, ‘Forshaw has reached a strong level of musicality, depth and technique that very few players have….he is a breath of fresh air, ‘hear him!’
Dan grew up in the small Lancashire fishing town of Fleetwood. Opera star Alfie Boe lived a few doors away from Dan and music was a big part of Dan’s childhood. In his youth he performed for Royalty, U.S. President Bill Clinton and for the opening of Tony Blair’s first conference as Prime Minister! Dan was taught by Ray Wilkes, a legend on the Northern Jazz scene and a former member of Cedar Walton’s band in New York. Dan started picking up gigs aged 14 and by 16 Dan was on the road with the ‘Amazing Blues Brothers Soul Revue Tour.’
After meeting Branford Marsalis at the RNCM in April 2003, Branford invited Dan to study with him in the USA, which Dan did in March / April 2005. Whilst in New York, Dan was inspired by the many amazing musicians he heard & upon returning to England, he moved to London in the summer of 2005. Dan’s target was to return to New York, but meeting and marrying his wife Katy led to a move to Belfast in 2007.
Cambridge and beyond…Dan is now based in Cambridge where he teaches saxophone through his award-winning website, Cambridge Saxophone.com. Dan still maintains an active performance schedule with regular tours, residences and his ‘Jazz Vespers‘ project, that has seen Dan on Prime Time National TV, (BBC One,) leading jazz events at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Ely Cathedral and the at new home for Jazz Vespers in London, Methodist Central Hall, Westminster.
Dan is an active ‘Vlogger’, (his CZcams channel now has close to 10,000 subscribers in twenty countries), and he enjoys photography, sport and most of all spending time with his young family.

Dear Dan. Can’t you please cut down your introduction to the half, as I get dizzy before you start. Otherwise I’m happy for your videos.

I’ve been practicing, jamming, and performing daily on the same Alta Jazz 2 alto for FOURTEEN months with no detectable degradation. Incredibly beautiful reed! I’ve never found ‘the’ Legere, and I’ve tried them all, including the American Cut. I played Fibracell for years, but the Silverstein has replaced everything, including cane. Also having good success with the 2 tenor.

Were these the Jazz or Classic reeds? I'm trying to find a video where the two different models are demoed, since verbal descriptions on a website, are far too subjective, to know which would be a better fit.

Sounds great hope they last well.👍

Sounds great. But isn't one of the big advantages of synthetic reeds that you don't have to do "reed maintenance" E.g. breaking in..?? This seems to defeat the purpose - to an extent.

Can the reed be worked? I need a 1/2 size.

Hi Dan, any update on the Alta reed? 🙂

The Reed sounds great Dan. You say it is the best synthetic reed you have played. I play with the Fibracel reeds. Have you tried them and if so would you say the Silverstein is better? Thanks Phil

I have used Fibracell for many years - mainly to avoid faffing around to find a good cane, which doesn't last long. I find in the last couple of years the quality is variable. I heard a couple of years ago the formula was changed. Some gave a wooly sound.

  • @nobodyofconsequence9930

Hi Dan. First, got your Signature Syos mouthpiece, love it. Second, how does the Alta compare with Legere now that you've played for a while
How about reed strength ? Do they have a return policy like Legere ? Tried to look up Info on them, but only see alto reeds for them. Keep up the great work, love your vlogs.

Removing critical comments on a customers view point surely isn't the way to go, I appreciate an objective view point a customer has experienced, rather than mere supplicant statements relating to the marketing blurb. Sirvalorsax stated exactly the deterioration of these ligs and their elastic nature WILL change with time.... Jeff snieder also did a blind test of expensive lig/elastic band.... Indistinguishable 🎷👍

Philip you're more than welcome to start your own CZcams channel and then you can set the parameters on what people comment on. I don't want mindless negative comments on my channel from the same people. This isn't the forum for it. Spamming the same comment on two of my videos is what I want either.

@@DanForshaw didn't realise I had posted it twice, honest mistake there.. 🤔 and I don't view my comment being mindless either, merely a statement of fact that in a so called review there are bound to be other users that may have experienced problems, these should be published so as ALL, including the manufacturer have a more holistic consumer take on the goods; otherwise its hardly a review is it? .... Just a marketing tool for the Company..... You state add comments some are bound to be less than favourable if people have had problems with ANY goods; its in the name 'a review' ... Quite a ridiculous statement😕....

Did you do a follow up video for the Alta reed after you'd had more time with it Dan?

As ever, the synthetic reed sounds okay, but soundwise not close to a cane reed
