How to Create Abstract Art | In the Studio with Steven Sabados | CBC Life
/ @cbclife - Jak na to + styl
When he said "with abstract, there's nothing intentional about it," I almost choked on my soda
Right? lol
Loool
That is what abstract is full of feeling but nothing on intention
But it can have intention
having watched this after about five BBC documentaries on the history of abstract art, I was also aghast. Abstract does *not* mean random. This is a neat, if expensive, craft project, not abstract art.
What a fun project piece and a heck of a nice guy.... but as myself a professional painter who started in realistic painting and then moved over to creating abstract paintings too.... I will state honestly that a quality abstract painting takes a heck of a lot of thought and time to get it where it looks and feels right. I also kept wanting to tell him, "rule of thirds", lol.
I loved it up until the white spray paint. I really like the idea of the plastic with the rolling pin technique.
Me too. Then the letters and worse still, the white paint just ruined it for me Sometimes Less id More
If he went left to right with the white gradient and stopped at the end of the letters, it would of shown the letters how he wanted PLUS the entire right side would have been left alone. Would've looked amazing.
Uses a ton of paint ($$$$) and then covers everything in white!! (my heart is bleeding!)
Plus I feel sooo friggin broke now! 😭
Exactly
Well The Basics isn't too expensive. But it still seems a waste just putting white on top.
We could just color where the words are
so worth it though.
Indeed! 😆 But look ar his studio, he is a Rich Artist
Kind of art attack tv show about “abstract painting “ . For my opinion this is a kind of graphic design category
I don't understand. He was so careful about the colors and not leaving empty spots and pointing out how two colors made green, so he balanced it out by putting more green....Then he painted white all over everything???
Agreed. He ruined all the beautiful work he just DID!
I knew he was catering to trend when he said that lettering was in right now 🙄
Color balance is my obstacle, any advise 4 me! , thanks
Love the rolling pin technique.Im going to have to give it a try...All the ideas running in my head now 😱. Thanks for sharing. A artist can always learn from another artist.. 😉
Wutsinyourcup you can use a blown up ziplock bag or a freezer bag to get a similar effect on a smaller canvas. You don’t press as hard but it moves a little on the paint. Check acrylic pouring with Fiona on CZcams. She has technique and makes gorgeous 3 -D flowers that way.
I loved the rolling pin idea but you lost me when you covered it up with the white spray paint. Got it though and will give it a try.
I liked the idea of using a rolling pin and the plastic. The colors were also so beautiful. I didn’t like the white spray paint though. If I was to use this technique, I’d dry pounce over the letters like a stencil.
did you guys noticed the emotion yall felt when he “ruined” the piece? that is what art and the process of art is about its not just what you see but the emotion you felt and feel while doing it
...thats aint it dude
As an artist, I just want to cry for so many reasons after watching this tutorial....
It feels like a craft project
why?
It’s because he’s treating like a cooking tutorial...
No words, there is nothing intentional about abstract? Years of studies prove the contrary, he needs to learn when he’s not just messing up boards. I can’t even finish watching
@@mariad3030 right
I can’t believe you were spray painting in your cute, new looking jeans! Fun project. I’d probably want more of the painting to show but hey it’s cool! Thanks!
I liked the technique, but so much of the beautiful color was lost. Everyone has their own ideas of beauty. Thanks for the technique lesson. I miss the bright, bold colors that you had in the beginning!
Same. I was a bit crushed when he sprayed so much white over the beautiful colors. 😢
I thought it was a fine technique lesson. Never thought of covering a base painting and rolling it out. I don't work big, but he gave me some ideas, and that's what teachers are supposed to do.
Five words come to mind, and I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way: Change Hands at a Hundred.
I have done this with my nails! With 2 colors and a white and when you put a clear gloss over, it’s CrAzY beautiful!
Good abstract art is very intentional
Exactly! In just the way this pathetic, cynical load of tripe is not deliberate
Agree with you. It is not easy to create good abstract art, in the same way and spirit of people like Jackson Pollock, who really thought about what art was and of process. This guy just kinda slapped things around, and it looks like it in the end.
@@NormYip Indeed. Literally, a blind robot could have done what that guy in the video does! It is one thing making random marks but discerning which ones are good or not is the crucial part.
"Call a museum and sell it."
Hahaha good one.
I like it before the lettering, never seen that technique before but with lettering could be great for a sign or cute quote.
Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to paint, become an artist, but I always put my dreams aside. Watching this video reminded me of my dream. You have opened my mind again! I can’t wait to start creating art! Thank you! You have given me plenty of ideas to start!
I started painting after I turned 50.
He created a beautiful piece, then ruined it with spray paint!
Ya. I really like it before the white spray paint!
I really liked it before the white spray paint too. I wish he would have put the letters down first and then they would have been white against the colorful background.
I think he was ruining it all the way he was doing it,
I liked it before the white paint too.
Tsetsi Exactly it’s what I also wrote, it’ s a pity to spoil all this painting to revover with white😕
This is the cleanest studio I have ever seen
Steven, I have been watching you for years and years... You never fail to amaze me.... Thank you for doing what you do!!
Cool technique with the rolling pin and masking for lettering. Although the end result is personally not my style it’s still cool. I can see utilizing these 2 techniques in my own artwork. I’ve often wanted to use topography in my art what a great way to do this! Thanks for sharing!
What an interesting technique. I think this would be a fun project to do with my kids.
If it comes from the heart, then it is art
I’m a walking contradiction, so this type of abstract speaks to me like no other. I want to be vivid and minimalistic all at the same time. It’s sort of rebellious- I love it
You just put into words my art style completely!!! Vivid, meaning I want it bold and making an impact. But minimal, meaning refined and almost not enough. Lol idk, but thanks babe!
ABSTRACT IS AN IDEA. Love it, Thank you.
It was perfect at 7:34.
All the white made me so sad because it was so beautiful before :( he should have started with the white spray paint, then the letters and lastly the paint smearing. So in the end the letters would be just white and all the beautiful color would still be seen. You are so talented and I love your work, and thank you for the video! It's just the white that threw it off a bit in my opinion :(
Yes. Spray the white where the letters would be. Put the letters on. THEN DO THE COLORS
And him saying you could sell it to a museum??? hahahaha lol nope! Museums and artbuyers will want art not a matching colors on canvas for your couch.....
Please learn forst to make art and how to express inspiration and emotions..visions stories etc...no Museum will buy from unknown people wanting to sell their paint on canvas that never ever started with inspiration and just has paint on it....
thats exactly wat i was thinking!
I dont think it was his art. I think they gave him the msterial and directions but he screwed it up.
Shaieiya : thats a good suggestion , even the final product broke my heart
You covered a beautiful painting with opaque white paint.
As an artist having worked in many forms, I STILL DO NOT COMPREHEND how doing a cool abstract painting is enhanced by big black letters stating a theory and obstructing there view to...AN ABSTRACT PAINTING!!! CRAZY STUFF!
Fun, did you put white all over first or just put the paints straight on?
I loved , and I can use my acrylic colours to do this. Good idea. Thank you so much !!!!🤗
Very interesting till he stuck those letters. I was excited and was looking forward to some thing
like akin rolling pin . But got hugely disappointed with such heavy white spray all over.
I agree Sandeep. Too much white spray paint, covered the beauty of the painting 🎨
The colors were great together and interesting line with the plastic. I wish he would have just spray painted the lettering area fading into the main color of piece, leaving a lot more of the original color.
That's what i thought he was going to do then he just went wild with the spray lol
An interesting, fun craft project. Cool rolling pin technique! Gotta try that. Looks very fun to do. Who cares if it's 'real' art or not? It's ok to have fun or just be a designer also. More videos like this, please! 💕
I loved the technique. The finished piece looks like a construction sign . "hardhat area" . "no open flame".
Yes!
Great new technique for me as a beginner to abstract painting. Thoroughly enjoyed the demo which gave me new ideas.
You covered all that abstract art that was so cool with the white. Bummer!
I love it both ways...with the white and with the vibrant colors!! Lovely work!!
How to make letters with color textures. Looks cool for advertising.
I am learning various styles, I liked this technique . The method seemed quite simple. Thanks for demonstration.
Oh c'mon people, he is giving a demonstration about reaching a particular effect. As artists we would take the technique and adapt it to our own ideas. There is no need for derogatory or cruel commenting
I know. Artists have never been mean. The art world is a supportive and safe place, full of comforting words. Criticism should never be critical.
Ángel
I agree👍
innovative to use the plastic - "Absolute Vodka" - in type would look on point. Great work!
The title is "How to Create Abstract Art", which is a pretty ambitious already. But the result just isn't compelling or the least bit interesting. Like others have already stated, covering all that paint with white ruined it. I thought he was going to dab it with a plastic bag or newspaper, like spray paint artists do. Nope, just covered it all up with white.
This is graphic person's interpretation of abstract art
Zahra Massey well, a decorator’s anyway...
yup exactly.....
Thank you for putting that into words. I have often wondered about these videos that create something "purdy" to go with your couch but have little to do with the act of creation. I guess I shouldn't be looking to CZcams to help me understand.
you want banana?
yeah, it look more like topography graphic designer approach.
Good abstract is most definitely intentional.
Indeed, it requires a good composition and color choice.
Stunning !!!!!
But u covered ur pattern too much with white !!!!!
Thank you for sharing ! You're really a hard worker !
Such a cool idea. Definitely going to try this.
Wow what an idea, you're a genius man, love you from Pakistan,
First time I ever seen this done. I would like to know, is can you use a clear varnish instead of the white. Because I really like the colors and how to letters ca out
so cool. thanks for this!
Thats so much paint the broke artist in me is screaming
Cut your acrylics with elmers glue all ($13 a gallon) 1:1 ration and thin slightly with water. Or use Flotreol ($19 a gallon) 1:1 ratio as well and thinned to desired consistency with water. You'll get WAY more bang for ur buck. Keep in mind the glue all DOES lighten the shade of your color but that's easily remedied by a few drops of a darker paint
@@meadowsasmr600 does this really work? I am going to look into this
I said the same
joy gonzalez it will work. You use one part paint to 2 parts Floetrol. Look at acrylic pouring on CZcams.
@@meadowsasmr600 you can get clear Elmer's now.
Loved this thank you for the demo.
Do you recommend a certain kind of acrylic paint? Thanks. Will try this! So cool!
To save time, money, energy just start painting canvous WHITE. And be done with it. Jeeeez
I used to do that to my bathroom walls. It was called Smooshing bzck then!! I am goi g to try the rolling pin...it looks beautifu!! You are amazing. Love your work...you have inspired me. Thank you!!💞🐕
Thanks for the idea, love to try this but I'm going to have less mist, thanks once again
Love the sounds of the almost empty bottles xD
Wht a timing. For days ive been thinking of doing an abstract art n here comes ur painting.
Thank you for the great easy idea. Also all paint in the big bowl. Doing this now. Thanks again
Update same day
Turns out very well. Happy with my 1st try
Merci! You inspire me.
The original painting was beautiful. This was graphic art
Exactly;
This gives me a lot of ideas! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for sharing with us. I liked it and appreciate your art. Well done and keep up the GOOD work.
Steven Sadabos - My new inspiration. ❤🔥
Edit: my mouth was stuck with WOW while peeling off the letters
I love how excited abstract artists get. The little kid always comes out... Beautiful work! Thanks for sharing!
Art is good when it provokes emotion and looking at the comments it's certainly done that!! It's an idea/technique that can be used in many ways - great demo!
ROLLING PIN WAS AWESOME!
What is art and what is craft.
For me this is a craft
He knows what he is doing from the start. No surprises, no challenge
And also is abstract an idea?
Or is abstraction the absence on an idea?
There is nothing abstract in a quote!
true this a craft not a art piece. And he cleary doesn t know what art is and what abstract art is.
This is nice as a graphic poster with a quote on it. Still nice as signmaking crafting. But don t ever call this abstract art! Let alone pretend that your video contains the truth about abstract art....It s painfull to watch.
Stevan. Thanks for sharing the lovely idea & introduction to easy basic abstract. I loved your art best with out the l letterings To me it was wow. In my enthusiasm i may have ventured into adi g a tint of copper or bronze for some highlights here & there my personal preference ofcourse. Great. Easy idea i will try a hand at a small size for starters. 🙏🙏👍
Am I the only one who got excited when he got down on his hands and knees? 😀
Rolling pin yes. Not sure about spray seems to squash colors
Went from wow great to wow disappointing !!
Hi. Very interesting technique, excellent Abstract painting, I liked very much. Thanks 🙏 Zz watching from Canada 🇨🇦.
Zeenat Zeenat zz...zzzzzzz exactly. Boring

Cool. Do a 'Live Laugh Love' one next.
I might try this rolling pin thing as a back ground for something else.
So good to see you on CZcams. I've missed you.
Wow. I never thought to use a rolling pin. Wish I had a garage to work in!
Love the abstract look without the lettering. Inknow its a personal preference but cool idea. Thanks for sharing!
loved the first part.
I love that he sprayed over it
I would have gone lighter with the spray paint so the true colors of the abstract shows
I love it!!! You are amazing...
makes beautiful piece, covers 90% of it in white....makes sense.
thats what I thought - he worked so hard on adding colors and then covered it all.
That’s what makes it abstract
Not suppose to make sense, that's the point ;)
What are you doing you ruin it
Seeing all that yummy paint covered killed me!!! YIKES!
It's all about the Typography. Well done! Thanks Neil ;)
Fun technique, thanks
What kind of spray paint did you use?
Fantastic technique, I'll try it on a smaller scale, but skip the white spray element ... thank you for the inspiration.
Art is in the eye of the beholder...don't watch if you don't like🤗
art critics must die
lol
How will I know if I don't like it if I never watch it...?
And furthermore art is not in the eye of the beholder art is anything that makes you have an emotional response so if you don't like it it's probably art doofus
His audience are the people who hang the word “DREAM” above their bed and “FOOD” in their kitchen.
Love it....I must try this. You are so talented
Me gusto tu tecnica.
Sólo usé el huslero para amasar !¡! Que maravilloso!
The wood should still be gessoed and prepared
Yes.
Interesting concept and technique.
I just started painting...even though I have no clue what I am doing I love it.lol
Thank you for showing the tutorial🙏❤ from 🇮🇩
It is amazing , fabulous , outstanding ....
You covered the beautiful painting up
