As for the acceleration, not long after getting a Model 3LR, I was traveling on a very curvy two lane road, and as one would expect, a tanker truck pulled out in the road ahead of me, slowing down my trip considerably. There is only one good straight strip to make a pass before reaching the town I was headed for, and when we got there I took a peek around the truck, saw a clear road, and floored it. I quickly cleared the truck, glanced at the speedometer, and about crapped myself when I saw it read 96 mph, when I had started the pass somewhere between 40 and 45 mph. I took my foot off the accelerator pedal and the regenerative braking was strong enough that I didn't have to touch the brakes in order to go through the rapidly approaching curve in the road. It's so nice having that burst of energy at your command.

I've been riding an electric scooter since 2018 so the regen braking isn't a new thing for me to understand but does take a bit getting use to. My father and my neighbor Howard weren't interested. They both complained about it having too much tech and being overly complicated. However they both are in their mid 80's so I get the close mindedness.

Nice review !, i drive my Model Y Long Range for 2.5 years now and still love driving it. Some important things you missed...space in the frunk , in the nose hehe. The autopilot function, tap once for addaptive crouse control, tap twice for auto pilote meaning the car drives itself keeping it in the lane , i use it when i am tired or need to find things for routeplanning or so. Also you can do a preheating, nice in the winter it brings the interiour on the requested temperature and defrost the screens. then it has a camp modus meaning you can sleep in the car it keeps fresh air and good temperature, the Dog modus meaning you can keep your dog into the car, it keeps it aircondintioned and display a message so people know and dont crash the window to resque the dog hehe Then the all around cameras watch the surroundings and if someone touches your car it saves the footage onto a usb stick so you have evidence who did something . Actually many more features but this are the ones i think are important to mention also. finally the safety..it is the safest car in the world with 3 times 5+ stars and it will break or change direction when it sees a crash comming. It even sees 4 cars ahead if you could get a collision if they are crashing. The car saved me once to crash into an ambulance !

I'm glad you like the Model Y. I've had mine for 1-1/2 years. 1). If you link your phone to the car, you don't need that black card any more. You just open the car door. 2) I open the glove box by using the voice command "Open glove box". 3). I changed my wheel covers to plastic uberturbine- looking wheels to protect the wheels from road rash. There are cheap plastic add-ons to protect the wheels you have for your test vehicle. 4) If you could use Full Self Driving, you would be able to operate the controls on the display better. Typically, I tug on the steering wheel, then do my business on the display. Usually I'm done before FSD nags me to pay attention. 5) The all wheel drive car has noticeable advantages over the rear wheel drive you are testing. The all wheel drive car is much faster and works better in mud, rain, sand and snow plus regen braking is more powerful and somewhat better balanced. 6). When I got my white interior, I coated the interior with a ceramic coating and the interior still looks perfectly clean and new. 7) BTW, the Tesla Model Y is the safest car in the world based on US and European governmental testing.

I think you're right about the type of buyer for a Model Y - someone who's not that interested in cars but wants fun with practicality. I've had a Model Y Performance since last August, and while I have a BMW K1300s (motorcycle) for fun, I actually haven't driven it since I bought this car. The MY is a fantastic and weird combination of practicality and speed. It's like a 4-wheel motorcycle in terms of performance and range, but it's the most practical thing you could bring to a grocery store at the same time. I've been driving motorcycles since I was 17, and because of that, any performance car I'd ever driven wasn't as fast or as fun as a boring motorcycle, so I never looked for much fun in a car, just one that had enough performance to get out of its own way. (Driving a 1998 Ford Windstar for 15 years wasn't fun at all.) Now if I were to buy a 2nd EV, it would probably be the new Model 3 Performance, so I could have fun around corners as much as in a straight line. But for a mainly 1-car driver, it seems perfect.

Almost everything is the same between LR and P except the power to overtake another vehicle. It is literally insane. The 21” wheels are standard on the P and curb rashes are far too easily to obtain in any shopping centres. ( scuff marks)

I think you really need to try the other variants, you've driven the slowest Tesla they make. You made a remark that if you owned that one you'd need a sportier car as well, try the long range, try the performance, i'm not sure you'd then be left wanting. If you have your phone set up as the key then key card isn't required, and you don't need to do anything to unlock the car and just drive away. The reason the steering wheel is electronic is you can setup multiple driver profiles, and it will adjust to whoever's phone key unlocks the vehicle etc. There's so much more about the car too that i feel you've missed, but a good positive review on an excellent car none the less. There are good reasons why it was the top selling model globally last year. Be interesting to see how much better the updated version is when it comes out, if it's anything like the differences were on the Model 3 then i think people will be extremely happy/pleased. I have a MY LR, best car i've owned, can imagine ever needing to get rid of it.

I bought my 2016 Model S 60D with a max range of 218 miles. The battery was a 75kWh software limited and original cost to unlock the additional range to 259 miles was $9K, but about 3 months after I owned it and realized that 218 was enough for my commuting, they offered it for $2K and I paid to unlock it to a 75D. I drove it across the United States in 2019 using the Tesla Superchargers and it was a wonderful trip. I still get 233 miles full charge today and was thinking about driving it across country again in the future. It has FSD which has gotten crazy good with the latest versions, still need a human there, but I have to intervene less and less. My next car will be a Tesla and wish I could convince the wife to give up her 2014 Jeep Wily Unlimited for a Model Y or even a Model X.

I've had a Tesla Model 3 AWD Long Range for 4.5 years, and it's still fun to drive. Service consists of tire rotation, changing the cabin air filter every two years, and every four year check on battery coolant and brake fluid. On my four year check, the brakes were virtually like new, and the brake fluid was fine. I would recommend using voice commands for things like setting cabin temperature, wipers, seat heaters, Navigation, checking tire pressures, and numerous other settings, therefore avoiding using the touchscreen most of the time.

I like the keycard idea; you have to physical touch the car with the key means thieves can't signal-boost the keyless fob to nick your car off the drive! The gear-stick is also not a bad idea; it's not a sporty driver-focused thing so it makes sense. I do think there are not enough buttons, putting everything in the screen is too much of a distraction for me. I don't want the dash plastered with buttons but for me there is such a thing as too few buttons.
Awesome of Tesla to lend you the car to review, I do like it when Manufacturers support the non-traditional journalism of CZcams.

The performance is obviously faster but the difference isn’t really worth it for the extra cost on a model y for the size

I think you should try driving another brand of electric car like a Hyundai Ionic 5/6 or Kia EV6. They are more like a normal petrol car in terms of having the usual buttons etc inside, but do give you the EV experience too. They also have easily changed regenerative braking settings so that you can easily switch between one pedal driving and coasting like in a petrol car.

Interesting review. I think you hit most of the typical driving points. Your point of still having a sporty car, what are you thinking that would be? Considering how quick the Tesla is, would that be a Lambo? What you didn't touch on was the charging, did you charge at home for the week? Also, did you have Full Self Driving - Supervised (FSD) in the car? It's like reviewing a smart phone and it wasn't connected to the internet! I'm going to say it's still not really there yet, but many of the features do work well and I would consider it a great feature for long boring drives and heavy traffic with stop and go traffic. And since you didn't have the car for more than a week, you didn't get an over the air update. This is where features are improved or updated with an over the air update. If that care was not equipped with FSD, you really need to give it a try.
