This is maybe one of the most creative board game videos I have seen from the hobby in a long time.
Man, part of my favorite thing about this is how SERIOUS this hypothetical situation is🤣 love it!
Oh we were fully in on the premise! My heart was breaking thinking I’d lost certain games
Thank you for always pushing the boundaries of what Board Game content can be. From “in a week” challenges, thrift shop finds, satirical news, your contributions to This Game is Broken, and now this, you all come up with the most innovative and fun content around. I really like how this highlights some smaller format games that don’t always get much attention.
In the end, I’m going to vote for Mike with Viscounts, Wingspan, Cascadia, High Society, and Silver & Gold.
Thanks so much for the kind words. We always want to be amongst folks pushing the form forward and we always love seeing folks respond positively to our silliness!
@@TheBrothersMurph this ain’t silliness…this is genius! You may have created your next series…the “_______ collection in one kalax”
@@bWOOOPdeWooop I feel like this needs to be titled “what’s in the shelf” with the “what’s in the box” clip from Seven dubbed over as the intro - and short enough not result in a copyright violation!
London and Ark Nova in Mike’s cube make it tough but with CoB, Clans of Caledonia, and Viticulture, I give the edge here to Nick.
Y'all need to get some Button Shy games up in there for this challenge!
This was very, very close as you both have some of my favorite games on your shelves but I had to go with Nick. His picks just *barely* edge out Mike's for me (honestly, Black Sonata helped push it over the edge because it's a game I've been super curious about and with Nick's shelf, I could actually try it!)
I can’t decide which is better! Some great choices in each. You guys went at it a completely different way from what I would, I would forget about size and just pick my favourites 😅 might have to give it a go. I was surprised at how many games you can actually get in a cube. Great video, loving the new year content 😊
This video has me wrestling with the space we have for our collection and what a well rounded, organized shelf could look like if we were to trim it down based on staying power, parity, and the joy they bring.
So thank you!
Love for Friday! That is always good to see. :)
It's a tough pick because I think you both did really well, but I'm giving this one to Mike 👍
My question to you is: if you could steal one game from the other's picks what would it be?
I (Nick) would steal The Crew. I think that’s such a good choice for a challenge like this. Great game, great for a well rounded collection, infinitely playable, and in a small box. I honestly think it’s the best single choice of the whole video
Brilliant idea! Really intriguing to watch
Awesome video, and awesome choices... though I will admit the tetris part of my brain was going crazy watching you both stuff things into the shelves. 🙃 I applaud Mike for going big with Ark Nova! That was a bold choice! Nick, Castles of Burgundy, one of my favorites! We have been looking for something fun and different to film for our channel, this challenge just might be it!
I’m picking Mike’s shelf. This was a hard choice. Y’all stuffed those shelves to the max! One of my fav bits y’all have done
Love the head-to-head; adds a whole new dimension to the puzzle challenge! I think Mike came out ahead in the end.
I've been waiting to see someone just throw the Too Many Bones Trove Chest in there and be like, "I'm done." 🙃
I'd also like to see a challenge where someone sees how many games they can fit in one cube if they take them out of the boxes: distill Splendor down to the ~10 cubic inches it actually needs!
Oh man if we did that I’m not convinced we could get twice as many games on the shelf!
It’d be chaos but so many games!
Nick has some bangers, but Mike has Ginkopolis, Village Rails, and London, so gotta go with that cube! Fun video, as always.
I had Nick with the early lead with Viticulture and Clans out of the gate, but as space became a factor, Mike charged back with the Crew and Cascadia and took the halfway lead with Ark Nova. Along the backstretch, things got tight with some small back-and-forth jostling. Heading into the homestretch Nick pulled ahead with an adrenaline rush with the D&D Handbook but slowed as the finish neared. Mike made a last-minute surge with Silver and Gold and Cribbage, but could not squeeze out any more. Winner: Nick by a nose.
Awesome video and great challenge. I gotta go with Mike's list. However, Nick's is also great. I can see you doing this with different constraints like games you would bring to a party, or for the Holiday's and stuff like that.
We are definitely considering doing more challenges like that so great suggestions!
Gosh this video makes me feel so validated because this is essentially how I organize my Kallax shelves. It’s sooooo satisfying to use up as much three-dimensional space possible. I do mine a little differently, we could call it “mullet style”: business in the front, chaotic party of hidden games in the back. Also, you forgot to take it to the next level and put boxes WITHIN boxes! That’s basically what I do, but it does lead to a lot of instances of “wait, where the ass did that game go again?”
Also, Nick wins.
@TheBrothersMurph , Jamie and Jeff are throwing shade at your kallax pronunciation, got to hit em with the abooot👢 and baaaaaygels🥯 😆
What an awesome challenge! There are so many great games in smaller boxes.
Gonna let you guys know what I put in one of my shelves.
Love this! You guys needed some Button Shy to squeeze on those shelves!
@@TheBrothersMurph We should work on that 😄 But love that Village Rails got in there early!
This was fun to watch! I guess I need to look into My City Roll and Build now.
Such a great idea and so much fun to watch!! Oh man!
A very hard choice but for me the winner is Mike’s shelf. Exactly at the moment in the video when I was wondering why nobody grabs Ark Nova, Mike took it. That was a big swing and finally, when he added Burgle Bros., I loved his collection too much to switch again!
Some great games for the purpose of this challenge were (for me) Spicy, Skull King, Splendor Duel, Grove, and any other button shy game.
If I have to pick one...tough call...but I gotta go with Nick for the win. Mike has some solid contenders, Nick just had a shelf that matched my tastes more. Great video gents!
Watched this tonight and my husband and I are planning to set this challenge for ourselves tomorrow on what we can fit in a cube. 😂 Thanks as always for such a fun video. We were at a toss up of which one of you had the better cube.

Nick has D&D handbook but no dice and Mike has a Cribbage board but no cards. Absolute bing bongs 😂.
It's really tough but I gotta go with Nick's shelf.
@@joshfrench5858 Asia can be played as a stand alone two player game.
@@suzannebrownbill9232 interesting. I never bothered with it. Base game with the two expansions is fine for me. Does it enhance the base game at all?
Well I choose that quiet year rpg which uses cards that have the standard numbers and suits so I think I can use it for cribbage but you’re absolutely right about nick not having dice!! Oops!
Great idea for a video! I felt the tension with every pick... go for a bigger game I love? But which one? And how many smaller games am I going to have to give up for it? Gah!
I would have definitely opened a bigger box and put smaller games inside. Even smaller boxes often have so much wasted space. I took Decrypto on a couple camping trips last year and fit One Night Ultimate Werewolf, Boom-O, Oh My Goods! plus the Longsdale expansion, and a deck of standard playing cards inside - that's a bunch of game in a small box!
As for the winner... I can't decide. Great games on both shelves along with too many that I haven't played yet to be able to choose.
Just watched this one. Definitely have to do this one at some point.
Tempted by Ark Nova, but Nick’s cube has so many of my faves! Viticulture, Radlands, Scout 🤩
Brilliant format! We can all put ourselves in your shoes, browsing the shelves. Fun to watch! Next time. Allow yourselves 1 big game for on TOP of your shelf. I think many of us have used Kallax tops to cheat and say “SEE!!! It’s not full. I still have room for more game/s”!
Have to give it to Mike here, though Nick's was not far behind. I'd have been happy with Cascadia, Viscounts & Ark Nove for light/ med/ heavy games, then a bunch of solid side picks. Great segment, more like
these please.
Mike won for me. Great video as always guys.
Seeing Ginkgopolis in there warmed my heart. One of the very best games out there
This is the most realistic representation of the hobby for most of us with limited space!
I'd go Mike just.
This was so much fun to watch. Great Video guys. The final competition is really tight, but I have to give the nod to Nick because of the D&D Player's Handbook. A lot of the other games are pretty comparable for me and both collections are well rounded, but the inclusion of an RPG puts it over the top in favor of Nick for me. Again, great video and great discussion on both sides.
Nick won, mainly because of adding the D&D book in that little slot. Very entertaining as always. If I had to get 1 shelf my dominion collection would take up most, I could fit in Concordia, Targi, Air, Land and Sea and 7 Wonders Duel. Keep making great videos
Mike for the Win!! Adding the cribbiage board was golden lol.
Interesting you did not have any Buttonshy games, that would have added so many more into the cube.
I was excited about Ark Nova, Rajas & Cascadia but the Viticulture, Clans, Castles & Cartographers combo pushed me to Nick's side! Great video👍
Great video. Mike's shelf of games is my preference. And it looks better even if he has no cards for the cribbage board.
But I do in fact. The quiet year rpg uses a deck of cards to take you through the story so I pulled a sneaky sneak
Nick with a slight victory due to Viticulture, Empires of the North and Radlands. Mike made it tough with Cascadia, Ark Nova, High Society and a few small games.
I’d also want to see All You Can Board try this challenge!
Dudes, what a tough call. On one hand Mike has Wingspan, Cascadia, Ark Nova, and so many others while Nick has Viticulture, Cartographers, Castles of Burgundy....since it's tough call I'm going with Mikes (as us Mike's have to stick together). Great choices all around.
THIS WAS FUN!!🎉 My vote is Mike for the best shelf. It was close competition though, truly.
This was a lot of fun. Its a win for Mike I believe, but I wouldn't be made with either shelf.
I would have gone for Red Cathedral for small factor worker placement, but you both tied in my book because you both have games I enjoy. - Cartographers, Cascadia, Wing Span, Viscounts, Silver & Gold, Ark Nova. It's like packing a game bag to take to game night... similar conundrum.
Nick by a small margin. I love Castles of Burgundy, Viticulture and Beer and Bread. Would like to try Project L, Clans of Caledonia, Radlands, and Black Sonata. Great little exercise. I would probably go with Castles, Viticulture, Terraforming Mars and Watergate. I wonder if Mike added Le Havre in what he would have taken out.
Mike definitely won. Such a great selection of games and very compact
id love to see another video that involves nesting Games! like this concept combined with the one about fitting as many games in one box
I mean combine that video with this one!
So nesting all the games possible and fitting as many boxes that are nested into a kallax cube
It is a tough choice as you guys did a phenomenal job packing those shelves with great choices but I think I have to give it to Mike
I spy Scholars of the South Tigris on your shelves -- saw that you have a first look of it. I love Wayfarers and Garphill games in general and can't wait to see this in action for a full play through for solo.
Woot! Stream of that going on tonight on twitch and Playthrough here on the tube is dropping at the end of the month!
Both shelves are awesome! My final vote is for Nick because of Viticulture, Castles of Burgundy, and Empires of the North. In the end, if it were me, I couldn't do without those three!
This is so tough. So half and half. Had to count who had more of what I liked. So it's 14 to 11 to Mike. But Nick has 3 of my favorite games in his shelf....arghhhh. You buttz
Gotta give Nick the win on this one. Viticulture, CoC, and EotN are just so good!
Watching this while trying to put away games after we took a ton off the shelf for our best of 2022 video. Tetris style is how I usually do it.
I want to climb through the screen and Tetris-rearrange your cubes! I feel like you could have fit a little bit more! 😂
@@TheBrothersMurph you guys did great though. I’m just a space-maximizing nerd. But that’s okay, because we love nerds in the Murphiverse! 😉
My collection of 15+ Button Shy games would have come in clutch lol. (Also I don't have an addiction to Button Shy....I swear).
You guys managing to fit those last few games in was *cheff's kiss* perfection. Man I just can't pick a winner though, I think if Nick had The Crew he would win just slightly. As it stands I honestly would call it a draw. Well done.
I feel like you would have won the challenge with like 5,729 button shy games.
I think the more the better. I'd try to squeeze in some Tiny Epic games like Galaxies, Dungeons, Heroes and Pirates. 7 Wonders Duel, Splendor Duel, Fantasy Realms, Star Realms, Cartographers and I might even have room for one or two big box games like Terraforming Mars, Castles of Burgudy or Spirit Island.
While Mike’s shelf is stacked tight, I enjoy the games on Nick’s shelf more. She Nick is my winner.
100% doing this and 100% making a better collection than both of you bing bongs. Just kidding! Both were great collections and it’s hard to choose! I think I might be learning towards Nicks cube! Viticulture, TCOB, Cartographers, Radlands, Scout, D&D! So good. But also Viscounts, Ark Nova, Cascadia, Wingspan on Mikes cube! Daaannngggg! 👏🏻
OMG, didn't you guys hear me screaming 7 Wonders Duel?! 😜Nick looked in that area SO many times. Every time he passed it by for something else I was all: Nooooo!
BTW - Mike won bc of Ginkgopolis
Right? I was looking right at 7WD when he said, "I don't have any 2-player games..." and then he picked up Beer and Bread!
I (Nick) am not a huge fan of 7 Wonders Duel. But Mike is, I was surprised he didn’t grab it
Ha! Nick isn’t a fan of that one and I ran out of room to take it but wanted it!
@@JonTripp115 IKR OMG - Beer & Bread might be good, but 7WD has stood the test of time!
This was awesome! NOW, you should see who won this with the BGG ratings. Score?
For me in my collection I woulda added stuff like Orleans, long shot, unmatched cobble and fog, scout, splendor duel, hive, a set of dice throne, patchwork, skull king, tiny epic Vikings, etc.
OR I’d just do foundations of rome and be done lol.
Mike has Wingspan, cascadia, ark nova and tussie mussie. And bag o chips, c’mon now.
What an awesome idea for a video! Ark Nova makes this such a difficult choice, but I would say Nick's is the better shelf. But I would personally have taken Five Tribes instead of Empires of the North. I am not going to actually do this with my Kallax, but my shelf would have Five Tribes, Ark Nova, Res Arcana, Suburbia, Condottiere, and Strife: Legacy of the Eternals. And maybe the travel edition of Quirkle, if I could squeeze it in.
Nick! I miss a meatier game though. Think you made a mistake with Empires. But the rest great picks! Great video by the way. Keep it up!
Mike's has more want to plays, but Nick takes the win with Viticulture, Castles of Burgundy, Cartographers, and Fantasy Realms.
Smash Up would take up the entire cube LOL
Both are really solid shelves, but I have to settle on Nick's. Black Sonata, Castles of Burgundy, Cartographers, and Viticulture. I could play those four games for a year and not get tired of them.
I like how this became a game of Tetris halfway through! I think Mike won for aesthetic reasons, but I might pick Nick for the actual games since I think he has more games that I like on his shelf.
Love this video and this idea!
To me there is a very very clear winner and that would be Michael Lee Murphy!
The funny thing is I am in this place right now. Running out of space, so I keep shuffling things to make it fit. Great time.
Ugh... this is hard but I'm going to go with Mike's shelf. The irony is that I actually own more of Nick's list than I do of Mike's.
Let this be a lesson to publishers--folks who don't have the space can't even consider a game with wasted space inside the box.
Facts! I completely understand the idea of self presence in a store, and wanting to have some thing that sticks out, but I will always be intrigued by some thing that is the size of village rails. I am actively of a mind now, where if a box is smaller than I expected I get more excited for that game.
@@TheBrothersMurph I have two caveats: Room for the expansion in the original box is nice since fewer boxes is better, and if you have an insert for cards PLEASE make it wide enough for sleeved cards or some people have to throw the whole insert out.
Nick... all day long! But let's check with a board game solution... each game gets a value based on my opinion (1-3): Mike:1+2+3+2+3+1+3+2+2+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+2+1+1=31points Nick:2+2+2+1+3+2+3+3+1+1+3+3+3+2+1+2+1+1+1=37points Nick wins it... but I gotta tell you, Not having Rajas really hurts. Sorry about all the ones guys, but I have not played all these games, so I gave you a point for quantity. In the end, it's just my stinkin' opinion! Great fun!
Mike wins it for me. Simply comes down to preference in the games chosen, well played by Nick as well however.
It's a tie! Tiebreaker is obviously swag, and Mike takes it. Due simply to the fact that he has an infant and is wearing a solid-colored shirt that isn't covered in food (or other) stains. Pure Swag. Great vid, lads. enjoyed immensely.
Nick wins for me. Viticulture, Castles, Empires of the North, Scout, Radlands... all some of my favorites.
Nick wins for putting a deck of cards in the cube. As far as if I was going to make a cube, the biggest challenge would be a lot of the games I'd want to put on it would be boxes that have overhang. I'm pretty sure something like Inis has overhang, but I don't see it because the molding on the wall keeps the Kallax from being flush.
Some great games on both lists. But my pick would be Mike's, especially for Cascadia, and other games im keen to play including My city dice and Ganges dice game.
Im voting Nick. Radlands and Viticulture are easily in my top 20.
Going to have to try this with my wife, What a fun idea!
In my opinion Nick won. This is a great challenge. I think he had games I prefer like castles of burgundy and scout etc.
Nick wins hands down! Sorry Mike, you had some great picks, Viscounts being my fav from your shelf, but Nick had so many absolute bangers! Great video bros, this was fun
Mike lost early in my opinion. I will say I like the Ginkopolis and High Society pick. Hands down Nick with Castles, Empires and Clans. Great video.
I just finished the video and London was an awesome comeback. Mike still got smoked…lol.
Ok...Mike, you know I love you, I respect you and I'm sorry...but this one goes to Nick. I also took some time to think about your challenge and my chaotic self went with something different. I've found the perfect collection for one cube, one shelf. What if there was one game to rule them all? One game that was made in a fiery pit of melting plastic. Indestructible, immovable. Created to fit entirely in one kallax cube. To bind you in eternity in its glory...what if...you pick the trove chest from too many bones.
I'd be happy with either shelf but I have to go with Nick for the win!
How many card games do I get to put inside the Splendor box with it? I think I have 2 inside of it right now, plus Pagoda. 😆
Alirght y'all! Who won this fight!? Who had the best collection of board games in one cube?

I really had a huge urge to take the video and add a layer of commentary as it went along…
I feel like Mike had the better shelf, despite Nick having some individual solid games and Mike adding Ark Nova almost killed it for me 😉
I’m down for doing this challenge though… oh boy!
touch choice, but I'm going with Nick's. A couple of higher hits on Mike's but more games overall I enjoy on Nicks
Genuine draw for me. I loved this drafting format!
Nick Took the Win for me. Mike has solid games!
Mike takes it with Ark Nova, High Society.
