This is sad. They took books and tried turning them in decor. Books are meant to inspire, education, the make you question things, entrain your fantasies, and so much more. But not to make your table look pretty

But the art of coffee tables books is that they are meant to be read or leafed through. When visiting someone's house, these are books that are put on a display because they are intended for guests to *look* or *read* through. And they usually inspire conversation and do all the things you listed above. It's possible for the book to be both aesthetically pleasing and stimulating!
