I think holding an xy era full art card really makes you appreciate them more, even though the colors are more muted. The depth of the texture is just so much for amplifying for the artwork than the shallow grooves that they use today. I think the value in full arts is still quite high from the earlier xy too due to the lower print quality, making 10s an actual chase
A nice budget collection is all the radiant cards from the Swsh sets. A buck or two a piece and the cross holo patterns all look really nice next to each other in a binder page.
No mention of radiant, they were easier to get but I liked that the pokémon were in "real" settings rather than white background
I personally quite like the v union gimmick as well as the legends cards where you have multiple cards combining into one artwork! I also think jumbo cards are underrated!

I was very sad to not see Amazing rare Suicune and Entei. The Raikou just feels so lonely in its binder, without his legendary friends :(
100% If they do one of the trios/pairs they should do them all. Imagine if silver tempest had an alt art ho oh to go with the lugia 😩
hot take 🙋♂️ but i love break cards. the all gold look is sick personally
Prism stars look totally insane once you collect all 27 of them and put them in binder on 3 subsequent pages. The design is incredible, they look like pokemon cards created by Magic the Gathering illustators :D. If you want some cheap complete collection that looks absolutely stunning, these cards are no-brainer. You can get most of them around 1 Euro and only like 3 of them are between 4 - 7Euro. So extremely cheap to finish, but looks totally awesome imho.
Character Rares(trainer gallery) actually came out in SM cosmic eclipse.
Would have love in we dig deeper into vintage as well to appreciate these subsets!
I really wish they continued the Amazing Rares the texture and look were amazing (no pun intended)
Shiny Pokémon and Amazing Rare cards are my favorite gimmicks
I just recently got back into TCG collecting and Trainer Galleries (plus the 12 from cosmic) were the first full "set" of cards I completed for my collection; and it's still my favorite. It's satisfying to flip through and was relatively easy to put together.
Tag Teams are goated imo, would love to see more concepts like it.
My favorite gimmicks are Tag Teams. They are just amazing. I always loved them. Team Up is my favorite set.
I love the trainer gallery cards and the full art cards. I am not a fan of the shiny pokemon cards and am probably going to skip Paldean Fates
The Van Gogh gimmick on paper was good and what Pokemon should do more often however, there should never be not enough stock where scalpers take advantage. The idea of travelling to get a card which is only accessible in a certain location taps into what made Pokemon for me anyway, so great (feels like an adventure).
its really hard for company's to attack scalpers, try to think of a hobby or niche that doesn't have one. there isn't. we need to stop looking at the company's but ourselves. miss out on the card? don't buy it on the resell market. that simple.
@@joshuahperez3117 "don't buy it on the resell market. that simple" this is silly logic. pokemon is one of the largest games and you're going to cycle through a lot of new people every year who will have to discover and rediscover the do's and don't's. there's also a gambling aspect to consider. it can easily be an addiction as much as a hobby and sometimes the two are confused. objectively speaking it is not simple.
pokemon go game was an "adventure," i get that aspect. it was nice to see people out and about instead of inside and more social. traveling to another country is a bit next level or privileged and that's okay on whatever level. that said, after it was made exclusive to people who traveled there, they should've printed it into the ground a few months later. they could do it with a different stamp on the card so the people who traveled there could truly get an 'exclusive' card.
I made like $600 from the van Gogh promos so I’m not complaining

I think the gold secret rares from XY were a bit of an omission from the list. The Gyrados from Breakpoint, Alakazam from Fates Collide, several Mewtwos. They were like a predecessor to tag team cards and had multiple pokemon on one card. Really cool!
This is a helpful recap as someone recent to the hobby.
I really hated break cards, I also really don't like those cards that are one big picture cut into four cards they look awful
V Unions. I agree with you other than the Crown Zenith Morpeko & Marnie V union cards. Those ones in particular are textured like an alt art so they actually look amazing in person.
Yea I love the Tag Team cards. A little too expensive to start getting after them now.

Kind of missed the point with the prism star cards. These were amazing for players of the game, and added a really cool dynamic to decks. Remember that collector/investors are only one part of the hobby and sometimes it's about the players!
I’m a huge fan of amazing rares. It’s a shame they stopped producing them… would have been great to see more of the legendaries get amazing rate printings!
Great video Jake! I buy art cards i really like. For example the gold sinnoh cards from CZ or the beast trio from CZ and here and there some other cards. I really like the mega cards but those are quite expensive unfortunately and im bummed that i missed out on so many sets
I love full art cards. What ive learned over the past few years is no matter the gimmick no matter the awful new pokemon someone out their is obsessed.
I am shocked that hyper/rainbow rares didn't make it into your list of Sun & Moon gimmicks. I thought they were a big game changer in terms of being chase cards. They're also beautiful cards imo.
I just recently had my whole collection stolen in storage and I had no idea where to start. I restarted collecting hard in the sun and moon era and GX hards have my heart but definitely the illustration rares and trainer gallery cards are just so beautiful I chose to collect those first! I loved how the prism star cards looked so clean though!
Vmax alts are the best. I wish they would hade continued them tell ends of s&s era.

I remember getting back into collecting and I bought an old pack and got the Hydregion and Machamp break cards. Thought they were kinda cool but then realized no one liked them and they are worth a dollar.

I also think Character Rares are better overall to Illustration Rares. I've collected all CHRs and CSRs from the SWSH era in Japanese and I love them!
I think Paldean Fates will be a bust...just like Shiny Fate. They should just bring back 1st edition base set style hollows. That would sell like hotcakes.💯

I agree 100%. Jake has thought provoking and quality content. I appreciate his calm but passionate demeanor which makes the audience feel like they are sitting down at a coffee shop talking with friends.
Out of this whole list, I feel like Amazing Rares are the least appreciated ones. I hope they bring them back in future sets.

disagree on break cards. the color scheme is still present at the top of the card. i've been collecting quite a few. the same complaints about break cards can be said about a lot of card rarities which are not ideal for play but fine for collectors.
I believe tag team is the best thing pokemon ever done. They should keep that mechanic in all generations. Or at least make the cards art rares that can’t be used in competition
Trainer gallery cards and illustration rares are almost exactly the same to me
Don't forget we were lucky enough to see Shining cards for just 1 set (Shining Legends, 2017) for the first time since 2002. One of only 3 sets ever with Shining Pokemon. My favorite "gimmick" ever, up there with Gold Star cards. I will say though, the original Vivid Voltage Amazing Rares are incredible looking cards in person (especially Rayquaza, Jirachi and Celebi). Some of the nicest cards ever made. Kind of a bummer that they're quite this common. I think 1 every other booster box would have been perfect.

One gimmick I want is a Gen 2 exclusive set just like 151!
XY FA's look better than their more modern counterparts except some Alt Arts. The Japanese writing popping out looks like its ripped from an anime.

I highly disagree with your thoughts on gen 5-6 full arts. They are by no means my fav eras but full arts for pokemon were great. For one, the print quality was better back then compared to the thin cardboard cards have had since the sun and moon era. The pokemon full arts actually had unique backgrounds too and had more of a premium feel. I'd argue pokemon full arts are less impressive today because of that difference, the simple layout of just a colored font depending on the pokemon's type and then just the pokemon sticking in the middle. Trainers were also pretty good but I'd agree that a lot of the supporter full arts today are better in some ways but it depends on the card.
I pulled the Blastoise EX full art in Japan when I was a teenager - still have it in excellent condition. No idea how with how I kept it!1

Now that Pokemon had arrived in mainland China there are waves of exclusive cards there arriving not found anywhere else. This year I got the Chinese alola friends, venasor/blastoise exclusives, Taipei pokemon center, and Japanese battle deck bulbasor and squirtle exclusives. Don’t know if I can keep it up 😅 but most importantly because the scarlet violet sets have been super boring to me.
What about masterball reverse holos?

I gotta disagree with you on the trainer galley cards. I think IR and SIR cards are waaaaay better than the trainer gallery cards. I do agree with you on the amazing rares though! I hope they make a come back, but maybe not print them into the ground this time lol.

I personally think the Mega pokemon in XY is my least favorite gimmick in the TCG. I buy english cards for english text not japanese text. I understand it's the name of the move in Japanese but I don''t care. I don't want extra text that takes away from the art of the card!
pokémon needs to bring back tag teams straight up man. no gimmick e free n comes close to them and it’s so fun getting 2 pokemon on one card. also bring back XY era textures. full arts these days are pathetic versus 10 years ago

I am surprised you didn’t talk about VSTAR. VSTAR Pokémon weren’t my favourite. VSTAR Pokémon I think we’re trying to be like GX Pokémon, but it didn’t feel the same. I enjoyed the GX gimmick Pokémon did. When GX crossed over to the tag team series, I thought Pokemon was at its best. I kind of lost interest in playing with the Pokémon TCG when VMAX came out though.

@@purpleraikoufr, if you only collect for value, you will most likely just get disappointment. Collecting because you like the art of the cards is the way to do it.
that's how it was with tag team cards. During sun & moon and swsh era, they were dirt cheap and no one cared about them at all but once prices were going crazy, everyone suddenly loved them now LOL

Print every set to the moon so everyone is happy but the scalpers/investors. Collect for the love of the cards or playability. Talk about gimmick
