And the lights will flicker on and off...
+Jaydon Duval
Nosferatu...
Lol😂
+Jaydon Duval And the walls will ooze green slime!!!!!
Oh wait they always do that.
+Gameshowboy 92 But what was the third thing?
+ysxacidhjaljdh Hey! I didn't know the busses ran this late!
Where's Greg Gibson the home plate umpire when you need him
Motioning to the electricians
+Peter Griffin lol
y r asking he almost THERE EVERYDAY
That is exactly word for word what I was going to say. Guess we're both geniuses!
Peter Griffin and the Dodgers celebrate in their dugout :P
Greg Gibson, the home plate umpire motioned me here. The Dodgers celebrate in their dugout.
Nice
Remember the days when Wrigley Field didn't even have lights.
Nah, I wasn't alive in the 30's man.
***** It was the 80s, you young whipper snapper. When Ronald Reagan was president and cigarettes were cool.
cagedtigersteve Hah, "whipper snapper". But damn, really..? Wonder why they would wait that long. I still wasn't born until '93. So nah, this guy doesn't remember.
August 8 1988 easy to remember 8888. Last major league stadium to install lights.
That's crazy that they didn't have lights until almost the 90's... I went to Fenway for the first time in June. I live 3 hours away in New Hampshire and somehow have never gone until then. Not sure when the lights were put in there, but it had to of been before 1975.
Obviously the lights came off because Greg Gibson, the home plate umpire, was motioning to them
and the Dodgers were celebrating in their dugout
I think Maddon was trying to maneuver his way to a victory. If he got his way, it was a win-win for him. Either he gets the umps to call a delay, which would cool off Kershaw or he gets them to call it and with the Cubs ahead after the 5th, they would have gotten the win. Mattingly understood what he was trying to do and likely called him on it. Can't really blame Maddon for trying to work the situation to his advantage. After all that, he really lost nothing by trying.
Yeah he probably was.. Cheap fuck.
+Greysen Gagné shut up
He lost some respect. But he’s people of Chicago don’t give a damn about that and have 0 morals.
beavishulme180 yeah
Supercrossed Up, and the people in LA do?
lights turn on and bartman is riding a goat in center field
lmao
With a black cat on his lap
That's not a goat that's my "mother in law"
Dude like 2 lights when off... wtf
The Cubs protest every time they have to play against Kershaw regardless of the lights.
Might want to check the score, dumb fuck. They were winning. Maddon did this to fuck with Kershaw and it worked.
Year before this, Cubs rocked Kershaw late in the season. Cubs have no problem with Clayton Kershaw.
+Annette Skandrick So exactly what happened a few days ago when we played the cubs (excluding the two games Kershaw wasn't pitching. We all know what happened.), because it looked a bit like Kershaw was giving you trouble.
Kirk Sullivan Clayton Kershaw has not faced the Cubs this year. You fucking idiot. Way to just fucking invent a game that never occurred and act like it's a thing that you witnessed. Moron.
+Kirk “DarknightRemix” Sullivan Cubs didn't face him you fucking idiot lol
+Annette Skandrick Plus didn't the Cubs take 3 out of 4 in that series too?
THE HASH SLINGING SLASHER!!!!!!
it reminds me of watchdogs first mission
That game was lame
Janel Lemay-Naït yes I just said that lol I loved that game it was the best
ashkechum101 nah that game sucked
Fred Frederickson it was good, but it was ubisoft
Fred Frederickson that game was epic. You're the lame one 😂
The super bowl power outer strikes again
HI BILLY MAYS HERE WITH THE HANDY SWITCH
how was that first pitch not a strike
I don't think you should be able to protest a game because of field issues, like lights and stuff like this, if you're the home team. It's your field, it's your responsibility to maintain its working order. If something happens and you lose, that's on your organization.
Technically the Cubs do not own Wrigley Field and the ball club has no responsibility to maintain it. That being said, the club and the field are owned by the same person but are separate entities just like the rest of his companies.
Chris M imagine all lights go out. Total darkness good luck hitting a fastball without your eyes. This is pretty much what happened except on a lesser scale. A few lights went out changing the light level which changes the players eyesight.
I agree that the home team needs to take responsibility but it’s dangerous
it's aiden peirce
Caucasian Mamba Good one.
Aiden pierce and the undertaker where taking there seats
Next Maddon will protest if a cloud passes over the sun during his half inning and the umps don't stop play.
Or if the pitcher is pitching to fast
Or If there is an eclipse!! :-P
Odd how this keeps happening to Maddon at home, with the opposing pitcher on the mound...
The revenge of steve bartman
Ikr
charles21180 Ha, you beat me to it : )
I feel so bad for him lol
true
nope
Does no one know how hard it is to see a baseball in a half lit stadium? I mean everyone in the comments is botching about it. Without proper lighting to a field during a night game it can pose a real risk for the players.
how many times am I going to see a freaking beer ad!!!!???
What does it mean to "protest" the game? I don't really understand.
It means that a team thinks that there's been a rule violation. In this case, I believe the rule violation is playing in "darkness."
+Ryan Phonyname Oh ok. Thanks!
This is a question better suited for Greg Gibson, the home plate umpire.
Yeah the commission reviews the game and if they feel like it's valid then they replay the game and start off from where the protest began
Adam, correct. It also gives them a chance to define or clarify game rules. Like what to do in the event the lights go out
With the lights off, it's an advantage for the pitching team but why protest when the defect happens at your own stadium.
Ok so who plugged the HD on the lights?!
at 1:38 you cant even see his name or number. How would this affect seeing a baseball pop up?
i was at the nationals vs dodgers game on a friday night in july and the game got delayed 3 times because of power outage. 1st time it was out for an hour, second about the same, and 3rd, they postponed the rest of the game until the next day. crazy
Why weren't you at the Jays game?
***** cause i was not in toronto then XD
Maddon does realize he's playing on his teams home field. I could understand if Mattingly were to protest the lights dimming. No one else, including the batter, seemed to think it was a problem.
I think somebody who works for Wrigley tampered with the lights just so Kershaw could cool down
Visibility is waaay worse in daytime games with all the shadows. It's still bright as hell in there.
the slash swinging slasher
I don't know too much about Major League Baseball, but has an "Official Protest of a Game" ever led to anything happening in the MLB? I mean did they ever change a game after it was played?
Yes. Remember the George Brett pine tar gane?
You can bet your life that the electric that runs the souvenir and food stands remained fully functional.
I thought I was watching Lights Out trailer.
How do you protest when ur playing in ur stadium.
I think I see where you're going with this, so I'll try to provide an honest answer.
Yes, it was a lighting failure at Wrigley Field (the Cubs' home stadium) that caused this whole situation. But the players don't control the lights. I don't know what caused it in this case, but Wrigley once lost lights because of a nearby fire -- so it could have been totally out of the team's control.
Madden issued his protest because, especially against one of the best pitchers in the game at that time, he wanted his players to have every opportunity to read his pitches.
His statement after the game was "I didn't like the idea that we had to play against a guy that's really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really good. You've got to see spin. You've got to be able to read everything. I did not like the fact that we had to go out and play without all the lights on." (Yes, the quote I saw truly does having him say "really" eight times.)
The protest became a moot point, though, because the Cubs actually won this game 4-2.
As for Kershaw, here's what he said after the game: "Obviously, I wanted it to keep going, but if they were going to wait for however long, just tell me and I’ll go sit down. I don’t know if Joe was trying to do that on purpose or what. It didn’t really affect me, but it was a good idea. It’s just one more thing to waste time. I’ve never seen a protest actually work. I mean, they won the game, so I hope they win their protest."
One problem with that -- once the Cubs won, the protest became null and void.
(As I said in another comment, I have no specific dog in this race. I like both of these teams, and have lived in both of these cities. I would have been just as happy with a Dodgers win in this game as I would have been with the Cubs win.)
The protest was based on the ruling by the umpires to continue play, not based on the fact that the lights went out in the first place. Personally, I think they should have continued play sooner...there was plenty of light to see the ball (I've played in much darker fields than this -- think of your local high school baseball field, if they play night games, and the scant number of lights they have compared to MLB ballparks which are lit for TV as much as they are lit for the game itself).
I mean...I get Joe Madden's point. If the lights were partially out when the Cubs were batting, and then came on before the Dodgers next at-bat (or maybe it was the fact that it was the bottom of the inning -- in which the Dodgers batted with more light, and now Cubs' hitters had less of it), then he saw a disadvantage. If a Cubs fielder could potentially lose a ball in the lights, maybe at that point a Dodgers fielder had less of a chance of losing a ball in the lights.
But really...play ball. The show must go on. Tally-ho, let's just do this, sometimes life isn't fair, and all that jazz. Play ball.
(Sorry for the long-winded reply -- I ramble sometimes).
And winning
Although owned by the same person the Cubs do not own Wrigley. The grounds/maintenance crews do not work for the Cubs organization.
What's the difference between arguing and protesting?
As someone who doesn't follow baseball can someone tell me why maddon is coaching the Cubs and not the Rays?
He just signed with them instead of the Rays
June 22, 2015. The Cubs wound up winning, 4-2.
Up until 1988, Wrigley field had no lights because leadership in the Cubs organization felt that baseball shouldn't be played at night. Bit of an ode to the olden days here. [Source: www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/politics/chi-chicagodays-wrigleylights-story-story.html]
The first time the light flickered i though i had blinked.
This should be a meme. Lights go out everyone for some reason attacks the umpires
Electric company: we are sorry but your payment has been declined.
Cubs: We protest.
Shouldn't the Cubs be responsible for the lighting at their home park? How can they protest themselves?
They're not protesting themselves idiot. They're protesting the umpires decision to continue playing.
Protest? But it's your own fucking stadium. You can't blame an away team for something that the host is responsible for.
doesntmatterwhoiam12 they're not trying to 'blame' the hosts, I'd imagine he's protesting because it's unsafe to play in. The protest was dropped because they won, MLB might have thrown it out anyway as it's the same for both teams.
+Martin Gardner The umpires are the sole judges as to whether the field is playable. This protest would have been denied.
+Alan Hess I think a team won a protest because of field conditions that the umps deemed unplayable.
+jannecechmanek Derp, it was because the team didn't get tarp on in a timely matter in a rain delay.
+doesntmatterwhoiam12 I thought the protest was that the Dodgers had an unfair advantage as they had 18 outs in full lighting instead of 16 outs
How are you gonna protest when it's your own stadiums fault?
Lost a phase! Someone call the power company. At least the lighting was planned well and like half of the field didn't go completely dark.
Oh no some lights out of 100 went of we can't hit like that!!! 😂😂😂😂
crazy
what does it mean when a manager protests a game
Ive played ball in darker lighting than that, come on. Maddon worried about a few lights going out? If you can still see around the park and see the ball, you can still play. Only if you cant see the ball, then you can stop.
True, I've played in parks that have had much less lighting, and seen the ball just fine, as both a batter and a fielder.
I think the announcers were right, that it was all gamesmanship on Madden's part. I don't hate him for it (and for the record I'm a fan of both of these clubs, and enjoy seeing both of them do well -- I count myself fortunate to have seen in my lifetime Kirk Gibson's 1988 home run and the Cubs finally winning it all after so many years), but you're absolutely right -- there was no reason to not play ball, since there was definitely enough light by which to play.
The power of the Coal City tornado maybe?
The first mission in Watch dogs where Aiden has to shut down the lights at the baseball game in CHICAGO!!! Go Aiden Pearce Go!
What exactly is the purpose of a playing under a protest?
Only 2 bulbs went out, that doesn't effect anything
Don't let this distract you from the fact the that pitch was called a ball
what it mean to protest in basebball
Good Lord, Jordan Baker is a large human.
We actually won this one. I think we should play with this lighting every game.
I understand It can make a bit of a difference but deal with the lights out
Dimmed lights are dangerous for the players because human retinas slow down in low light and that causes slower reaction times, but the analyst is dim in ways no amount of light can help, and probably couldn't grasp that no matter how patiently it was explained to him.
They were missing like 12 lights out of 100 there was clearly enough light to hit a ball. Plus it was at wrigley, so the cubs should be responsible for anything like that anyways. If anything the dodgers should have protested since the cubs couldn't light their field "properly"
Greg Gibson now motioning to both lights
What is a pull hitter and what is a push hitter
Pull hitters hit the ball with an early swing, while push hitters hit with a late swing. The timing affects what part of the field the ball goes to after hitting it.
so if you are a righty batter you pull it to left field and push to right field
Mini Atrax Yes.
BeatleKid96 I was just telling him
+Mini Atrax Oh. Okay.
I remember being at this game haha
That’s how you know Kershaw loves the game
well what ended up happening wtf they just gunna end the video in the middle of it
when the lights go down in Wrigley.
I doubt this is a protestable situation. Once the lineups are given to the umpire(s) at the start of the game, all decisions as to the suitability of the field for play, including weather and lighting conditions, are solely up to the judgment of the umpire(s). Judgment decisions can't be protested. There is nothing in the rulebook that specifies a minimum lighting level. Even with half the lights out, an MLB stadium is surely better lit than most high school and many college ballfields.
It's their field... wah wah play on
I don't get how they are the ones who protest the game. It's their field and the lights are their responsibility, not the Dodgers'
I get stopping for only a few minutes but c'mon...
i hate when people try to do that it runes the games pace and it throws off the pitcher
that's the pojnt
*ruins
+Cyrus565 And you *point
Damn want the grammar award?
+RandalPlays yup
watch dogs 1 irl when a blackout appears in Chicago's stadium
If we're being real, they should've just called the game on account of darkness like they used to do
Why are coaches and umpires so picky when it comes to game conditions? Just play ball dammit.
The lights at Wrigley were installed in 1988, what happened in the previous years. :I
The Cubs didn't play night games at Wrigley Field until 8/8/1988 :|
William Rivera that's what he said u dumbo
Karie Miller well that's the answer...
Robert King They only played day games at home. Seriously, the majority of fans who watched NL baseball since then know that.
they used candles.... kidding
The Cubs traditional games was always played at 105...
The most exciting thing in baseball
there is lights on.
"the night the lights went out at Wrigley" lol
So... game under protest. What does that mean?
bullanguero82 The office would review the game and see in this case if one team had an advantage over the other and if it is determined that it's true the game would be replayed again starting from the moment the protest was lodged.
In essence a manager lodges a protest when they feel something happened that may affect the result of the game. If the cubs end up winning then who cares you know, you could say nothing changed, but if they end up losing the manager can argue that the lights going out affected his teams performance or helped the opposing team.
rjh00 I see... Well that's new! Thanks for the explanation. I didn't think the "under protest" thing could be that important.
+rjh00 A game can only be protested if a rule was improperly applied. That did not happen here. The protest would have been denied.
Greg Gibson, the homeplate umpire, gesturing to both lights...
They turned the beginning of Watch Dogs 1 into a real thing
Just me, but I didn't think it was that big of a deal. It didn't look too significantly darker out there.
Tom Klimczyk it was, would of made it hard to hit or to field balls.
+David Anderson thing is anything that can make it harder to see that ball can be dangerous.
cameras catch light , so it's darker than it actually looks
I was there
The Dodgers should be able to protest. The Cubs should be able to keep the lights on
Dodgers should have been the ones to protest, it was Wrigley after all.
Greg Gibson the home plate umpire motions to both lights
if the lights went out at Wrigley that is the cubs home stadium should not the other team be upset. your going to protest when it is your team's stadium issues
Joeys right hand squeeze true but works both ways both pitchers would have an advantage. Not like one team's pitcher has advantage and other does not. I say once again it is your home stadium having issues take it up with maintenance and team ownership.
The issue is that the lights went out in the middle of an inning, so if the game is played and the lights dont come back, then the Cubs have to hit in the dark one more time than the Dodgers. Thats why at the end of the video the announcers mention "this didnt happen before the start of a full inning"
This llama commercial is da truuthhh😂
I hate it
lol i know
Lol Kershaw wanted to keep pitching
Did somebody forget to pay the electric bill?
so what was the outcome?
Cubs won 4-2
cubsrule44 nice name. headed to the cubs / mets game tomm! hopefully they can get out of this skid.
billyhammett enjoy the win?
Fr0zENeXPl0sI0n4444 yea legit win, but we need to start scoring more. One run games isn't going to cut it in the long run.
billyhammett agreed
How many fingers do I have up umm 3 alright let's play lol
If it rained would they protest that too??!!!???
As a Cubs fan I even thought that joe was Being dramatic
Thank God for electricity or we'd have to watch TV in the dark.
same team that postponed a game for rain on a sunny Chicago afternoon. Hacks
The ghost of Steve Bartman haunted the lights
Just like old times! 😂
