  • Mount Koya, or Koyasan, is one of religious centers of Japan and UNESCO World Heritage site located in a beautiful old forest.
    Hello and welcome to my channel! This is my second CZcams video and first ever vlog. On this channel I would like to share my passion for travel, photography and East Asian countries, starting from Japan. This channel will be heavily nature-oriented although not limited to it. I would like to welcome you to follow me on my journey.
    Before we get to my Japan travel blog lets me introduce myself. My name is Roman Sudarikov. I was born in Estonia. At the age of eleven I moved to Finland, where I have spent more than 20 years of my life. Currently I am staying in Kyoto, Japan. I feel that this place has everything I need. It has a feeling of a small little town surrounded by nature and full of history, but at the same time it provides everything that you would expect from a big city. It is full of contradictions which I find very fascinating. I like Kyoto a lot and wanted to spend here a bit longer period of time, so in the beginning of this year I decided to make my move. More information about me can be found on my website www.romansudarikov.com/about/
    In my very first vlog I visit Mount Koya or Koyasan (高野山) on a day trip from Kyoto. Koyasan is a small town with over one hundred temples situated in the northern part of Wakayama Prefecture. It is located on an 800-meters high basin surrounded by eight mountain peaks. Landform's resemblance to a lotus flower is said to have been the main reason for choosing the place. Koyasan is the religious center of Shingon Buddhism and one of Japan’s most sacred sites. The Shingon sect was established in 816 by the monk Kukai (774-835), also known as Kobo Daishi. He is believed not to be dead, but only resting there in eternal meditation awaiting the return of the Buddha in his mausoleum at Okunoin Temple. Okunoin's cemetery is largest in Japan with over 200000 tombstones and the most representative place of all Mount Koya. This is where the most of Koyasan online pictures you see come from and also where we spent most of our day trip. The other places we visited on that day are Kongobuji Temple and Danjo Garan Temple. Kongobuji is the head temple of Shingon Buddhism and Danjo Garan on the other hand is a main temple complex of Koyasan.
    A day trip to Koyasan is a very feasible option if you are staying in Kyoto, although staying overnight at one of the temples would make even better experience. It was great fun filming and editing this video. I also learned a lot in process. Thank you very much for watching! Glenn, thank you very much for watching and the comment! I am happy to hear that you liked the video and it maybe also helped you planing your trip! There is a lot to see here in Kansai area (around Osaka) and you are going to have plenty of time. Koyasan is definitely worth visiting! If you haven't been to Kyoto yet you should visit it too. You will not find the same amount of temples and historical monuments anywhere else in Japan. There is a lot of nature around too. If you are interested more in nature in the south direction from Osaka there a lot of beautiful location although many of them are a bit harder to access. Tomorrow we are going to Kumano Kodo, a bit more south from Koyasan. There are over 1000 years old pilgrimage routes which we are planing to hike for 3 days and also film. Once again thank you very much for watching! I wish you to have a nice trip to Japan!

      Huge thank you from me and Kan for watching, commenting, double subscribe and your kind words! We are very happy to hear that you could feel like you are traveling with us, because this is what we are trying to archive by filming everything from the start to the end and making such long vlogs. Koyasan was our first vlog and I have been trying constantly to improve the quality. My most recent videos are short cherry blossom videos from Kyoto, not vlog style, where I am also trying to convey the atmosphere by showing a lot of people. There will be one more short one, which I am planning to publish about 30 hour from now. After that there will be 3 videos from our 3 days trip to Kumano Kodo, which is related to Koyasan. It will still take me some time to finish those but I think that you might like them if you are interested in the area around Koyasan. My Yoshino vlog is also related to Koyasan. Thank you very much once again for everything!

I went to Koyasan in 2017 but the train line was still out so we had to transfer to a bus which unfortunately threw us way behind schedule. But I guess that just means I'll have to go back one day for a proper visit.

I remember something that in 2018 after our trip the line also was cut because of typhoon and there were buses instead, so it seems to repeat from time to time. I think this place is worth a second trip or a longer visit than a day trip as we did. Staying overnight in a temple could be good experience too. Personally I would like to do some hikes in that area in the future. I wish you luck on your next trip to Koyasan and in general too! Once again thank you very much for watching!

      а вот музыка с 14 40- до 16 15 мне понравилась больше, думаю под святыни тоже бы подошла(музыка как у Эрика Сати с маленькой долей мистики).
      Я думаю у вас все хорошо! как предложение: когда в программе есть контрасты, звучит современная фоновая музыка (через паузу) зазвучала традиционная музыка (в тему к нац.традициям, обычаям, архитектуре, малой архитектурной форме...) и затем (через паузу) опять продолжилась фоновая музыка - всегда эффектно!
      на самом деле у вас и так все хорошо, можно и не заморачиваться))) Еще раз удачи вам Роман и Кан!!!

    • @RomanSudarikov
      @RomanSudarikov  Před 3 lety +1

      Спасибо большое! Удзи действительно очень длинное, но я думаю, что оно на данный момент лучше всех получилось. Музыка, которая более в японском или азиатском стиле - это примерно 18-21 мин, 30-33 мин и 46-49 мин. Это как раз когда мы в храме или святилище. Я обычно хочу по возможности фоновую музыку с песней. Так во влоге 6 Ёсино, но я думаю, что там я перестарался с музыкой и когда делал Удзи специально выбирал более фоновую, не так заметную музыку. Я стараюсь чтобы был баланс между тремя типами содержимого: 1. речь, 2. с музыкой и 3. без музыки только звуки окружаемого. В Ёсино номер 3. не хватало, и я хотел исправит это в Удзи. Также стараюсь выбирать музыку, в которой много изменений, и потом подгоняю материал под них. Я ещё учусь и поэтому много анализирую как делать лучше. Очень большое спасибо за ваши советы! Я буду иметь в виду и попробую, когда будет подходящие видео. Похожую перемену музыки с паузой и назад я использовал один раз в видео "Kyoto Cherry Blossom 2021 - Kamogawa River north of Nakaragi Path".
      В Коясан русских субтитров не было, но к новым видео, включая Удзи я стараюсь делать перевод и на русский. К Коясан тоже планирую сделать.
      Я перевёл содержимое ваших комментарии Кан тоже.
      Спасибо вам большое!

      Thank you very much for watching and the comment! It doesn't sound creepy here in Japan because there are a lot cemeteries in Kyoto all around the city, even in the city center itself. Buddhist Temples often have cemeteries behind then and here is a lot of temples here. I am kind of used to it. Koyasan is also quite a special place and the atmosphere was magical and not creepy at all when the walked there during the blue hour.

Although it is said that people prefer shorter videos on CZcams, we are trying to make a bit longer ones to show the trip completely from the start to the end, so that the viewers could feel that they are on that trip too. I am very happy to hear that you felt this way! Thank you for your complement about my skills. I still learning how to make those videos. We will keep on making those. We are putting all our strength in making those, but it takes time to edit. The current project I am editing is two videos from our trip to HongKong, but after that there will be Japan again. 3 big trips in Japan are in the queue to being edited. I wonder did you visit Koyasan during your last trip to Japan one month ago or are you planing to go there on your next trip?

      @@RomanSudarikov I think that having a balanced mix of long and short videos would work well for this channel. Personally I enjoyed every minute of this video and the length was perfect to capture your entire experience.
      While I was in Japan, I only visited Tokyo as I felt that there was so much to see and I only had one week to do it all! Although, I wish I made it out of the city for at least one day because when I think back on my trip I realize I spent a majority of my time in the city looking for parks and gardens to get away from the crowds haha! My next visit will definitely be longer and I will be spending more time in nature around the countryside/mountain regions. I'm very jealous that you have the opportunity to live there and I'll continue to live vicariously through your videos :)

      Thank you very much for watching my video! I just used google map. It works very well here in Japan. I found that public transportation on Google is more detailed for Japan than many other countries. It is also more convenient than Japanese websites. Although this is my opinion in general, Koyasan buses are not on google, so after arriving there I had to rely on the information provided on location. This was a bit complicated. Later when making this video I found this website. www.rinkan.co.jp/global/en/ It is the same information as at the location but collected in one place. I hope this helps. Stunning footage. I've decided to include Koyasan into my next trip to Osaka and Kyoto now.
    PS= Unsure if you're receptive to any of your enthusiastic, supporters offering little bits of kindly meant constructive criticism/honest feedback but here goes anyway: please reconsider your music soundtracks. I found them overbearing and obnoxious and irrelevant to the glorious visuals and possible mood you could have curated. Rock music blaring over a forest? Constant, excitable, almost manic track changes don't work for me especially when disco, pop or rock music is loudly playing over such footage. Ambient sound recording is evocative and really immersive for your viewers, adding another sensory dimension to your footage. If nobody says anything unpleasant to hear (but meant in the spirit of supportive, constructive criticism and helpful feedback and nothing more) then creative, hardworking people can often be left scratching their heads over why they aren't more successful or able to generate great viewing numbers and subscribers. Ultimately, it's your channel and you can do exactly as you please. I am always wary of offending and upsetting a hardworking, generous stranger who gave me more joy than irritation in life, but I just thought I'd offer you one single 'negative' in what is otherwise an entire dump truck filled with happy little thumbs up 👍👍👍. If I made videos myself I would actively ask for feedback in my early days of creating and uploading. Some people get very defensive and take it the wrong way. I hope I've made myself clear 🙏. A terrific video aside from one single aesthetic objection (not personal in the slightest). Thank you so much for your hard work here. An inspiration. 😃

Even when there have been cases when things are outside of my control, skill level, recourses or for any other reason I couldn't implement those changes, I have been profoundly investigating any solutions. I think it is second time when someone mentioning that music style do not fit the theme of this vlog. I agree on that. It was my incompetence because it was my second video edited and first vlog and now after few years I see a lot of mistakes in it and also ways to improve it. Music is just one of those. Actually soundtrack for my vlogs is something I put a lot of effort but there have been also some other mistakes with it too. Other than this video, for example Yoshino vlog has too much music. I love the clarity of the vid. Actually I feel you entered in the modern part of the cemetery. I feel no one suggested you enter from town where the first impression is dramatic. Your entrance was a bit underwhelming. I had the privilege to visit Mount Koya and stay at the Fudoin temple 2 nights and take in this spiritual and millenary cultural aspect of Japan, one of the most memorable parts of our voyage one of many extra ordinary experiences. We had the JR rail green pass and also went from Kyoto to Mt Koya only 2 portions were not part of Jr Pass but only paid like $34.00 equivalent. Also Swica is not accepted for transportation in Koya but very inexpensive bus fares. The little town is owned by the monks and no credit cards accepted so come prepared with cash. Our temple stay was delightful memorable gourmet vegan meals at Fudoin temple beautiful smaller temple as what i have seen in other videos other temples do not serve in the amazing manner and style as Fudoin temple. It was not inexpensive but worth every yen. There is so much to see in the town and experience aJapan like no other. I actually felt I was a mystic and spiritual journey. Dear Alma Oaxaca, Thank you for very much for watching my video and also writing such a long and informative comment. I highly appreciate putting so much of your time and effort in it! It is true, our trip was not really planed to the smallest details and we decided things mostly on the go. Entering from the oldest side of the cemetery would had been more impressive. I think it is possible to save travel costs with JR pass but you would have to go through Nara. I assume that you used that route. We leave in Japan, so we cannot buy JR passes and even if we could, it was just one trip, so it would had been cheaper in this case to just use normal tickets. Of course for the travelers from abroad I would highly recommend using JR pass if they are planing to move around the Japan a lot. Without JR pass the connection between Koyasan and Kyoto is a bit faster if you go through Osaka than through Nara. This is why we had chosen that route. This was just one day trip, but I would really like to stay in a temple and explore that area even more. We liked this small town and in general we enjoy a lot traveling to a bit more remote location such Koyasan. We will definitely return and also considering doing some hike there. The hike would be not the easiest one so that would require some preparations. Actually after this trip we did some more trips already to that area of Japan, but I am struggling with not having enough free time to edit. My next video will be second part of our Hong Kong trip, it is almost ready, but after it I will edit Yoshino during cherry blossom season. It is historically most famous cherry blossom location in Japan and also belongs to the same network of temple as Koyasan. We have shoot also 3 days hike in Kumano Kodo which will be 3 vlogs. If you would like to experience more of the traditional Japan, I think it is a good decision. The weather is quite unstable. It doesn’t rain all the time but when it rains it rains a lot. You will have to rely a bit on luck. But it does have advantages too. The locations will be less crowded. The rain also can add its own atmosphere to the places. For example, I find that sitting inside of some small temple and just watching the rain in the garden outside can be very relaxing. Koyasan too might feel even more mysterious in the rain. If you don't especially hate the rain and prepare yourself for it, I think you will be alright.

      You will be there about the same time we did, so I think it should not be crowded at all. The most popular places such as Kyoto for example are more or less crowded all around the year, but you don't have to go far away from those to find yourself completely alone. The contrast is huge. The locals are quite well aware about it and trying to find solutions. My next two videos from Ohara, which are in the last stage of editing, should show that very well. Japan is very photogenic so I am sure it will be a great trip!

    Is it still so warm there in the middle of November? I# going to visit those places soon and I thought it will be between 10-18 °C. Music and filming are very nice! But why you introduced only yourself? It was looking a bit strange...

      Thank you very much for watching and the comment! The video was shot in June 2018. There is a huge delay before posting because it takes me a lot of time to edit. I haven't been at Koyasan in November, but I think between 10-18 °C is about right. Late evening and during the night it could probably be even colder so I would bring some warm clothes just in case. Thank you very much also for the feedback! I am aware about this problem and completely agree with you. It was our first vlog and at the time of the filming Kan wished just to follow me without giving any information about herself. During editing she agreed on giving her name and nationality, which then I wrote on the screen to correct this problem a bit. So far the best introduction of both of us could be found in the beginning of our Uji vlog. It is "VLOG 7 Flowers, temples and green tea of Uji". Once again thank you very much!

      I haven't tried your combo, but it sounds like it might be even harder to handle on the trip than what I use. I am also still learning! I assume that you did the trip already because you mentioned middle of November before. I hope that you had a great trip!

      @@RomanSudarikov Yes it turned out to be a bad idea. First combo set didn't included LIDAR and so auto-focus. Secondly it was too big and not proper gear for such kind of filming. It is really for a cinema set, not for a vlogging. Last but not least I didn't have any experience with it. For such cases I think the best would be an auto-focus camera with stabilization like Sony Alpha 7s III or FX3/Fx6 or Panasonic GH5 and comparable. However I published some hand held video shots on Shibuya on my channel made with this camera. In Okunoin I used mostly my smartphone and only few shots with the camera: czcams.com/video/1iFnpzmMJ6s/video.html

    • @RomanSudarikov
      @RomanSudarikov  Před rokem +1

      I see. When shooting I always have everything in manual except focus. It is already hard to keep monitoring constantly exposure and adjusting aperture, ISO, ND filter strength and some times also shutter speed. I am also often clicking the screen of the camera to choose autofocus location, but manual focus would be completely impossible for me to handle on the go. I have been quite often looking at the Black Magic cameras but not having auto focus of my Canon camera is too big sacrifice to make a jump.

      Hello PaKou Yang,
      Thank you very much for watching!
      Here is a text which I made when I was editing the video:
      Kyoto Station (JR Tokaido-Sanyo Line Special Rapid bound for Himeji 560JPY, 7:23) → 7:54 Osaka Station ( Kansai Airport Rapid for Nishikujo, Tennoji 180JPY , 8:04) →8:20 Shin-Imamiya Station (Nankai-limited Express Koya 1 for Gokurakubashi 870JPY+780JPY , 8:44) →10:01 Gokurakubashi Station(Nankai Koyasan Cable 390JPY, 10:09) →10:14 Koyasan Station →(Bus No.31 for Daimon Minami Chushajo 1 day bus ticket 830JPY, 10:20) →10:31 Senjuinbashi(West) →Senjuinbashi(East) Bus No.22, 10:58 → 11:04 Okunoin-mae
      Here is the same text in Japanese in case you prefer it over English:
      京都駅(JR東海道山陽本線新快速 姫路行, 560円 , 7:23)→7:54大阪駅(関空快速 西九条,天王寺方面, 180円, 8:04)→8:20新今宮駅(南海高野線 特急こうや1号 極楽橋行, 870円+780指定席, 8:44)→10:01極楽橋駅(高野山ケーブルケーブル 高野山行 390円, 10:09)→10:14高野山駅→ 高野山(バス31号 大門南駐車場行き 一日フリー乗車券 830円, 10:20)→ 10:31千手院橋(西) → 千手院橋(東) バス22号10:58→ 11:04奥の院前
      There are many possibilities where you could change the train in Osaka and which one is fastest depends on the time you are leaving. So the start might be different but all of routes will lead you to getting on Nankai-limited Express Koya which is a fastest train to get to Koyasan. Google is a perfect tool to investigate it. There is also alternative way through Nara. It will be slower but you will be able to use JR pass for the most part of it. So going through Nara is good only if you want to save some money by using JR pass in my opinion.
      Please note, that google is great tool to get to Koyasan, but the Koyasan local buses are not on google, or at least they weren't when we visited it last year.
      Does it answers your question? If you have any questions please feel free too ask. I will try my best to answer them.
      Roman

      I forgot to mention that the travel time from Kyoto Station to Koyasan Station using Nankai-limited Express will be from 2 and half hour to a bit less that 3 hours depending on the route you take and what time you leave. 2 and half hour is also a bit more expensive because it require a Haruka Express train which is a fast line to Osaka Airport. The earliest trains seems to leave Kyoto around 5:20 am.

    • @RomanSudarikov
      @RomanSudarikov  Před 5 lety +1

      Thank you for your comment! You will have to use different route. It might not be the most convenient and fastest way to get there but you can use JR pass for the most part of it. Again convenience depends from where you are starting from. So for example if you are going there from Nara it will actually be better that the route we took. Closest JR station to Mount Koya is Hashimoto. You will have to get there first. From there normally you would take other train not covered by JR pass to Gokurakubashi and then cable car to the top, but at the moment it seems that cable care is under repaid until February 28, 2019. There is substitute bus connection from Hashimoto to Koyasan. Using those you will arrive at Koyasan to a bit different location first compared to us, but from there you will be able to start using the same local buses we took, so it should not make a big difference.

Now, having said that, I must say that the fact that you never bothered to introduce us to your lovely companion (not even after, on the footnotes) left a very negative impression, which affected the whole experience of watching your video. I still urge you to fix it, at least on the notes describing the video.

      Hello Canterbury J Higuma! Thank you very much for watching and the comment! I highly appreciate your feedback and I completely agree that the introduction of my partner is not at adequate level. At moment of filming our first vlogs Kan wished only to accompany me and not talk about herself at all. At the moment of editing Koyasan video, I was able to convince her only to add name and nationality information on the screen which come at 33s mark. Better introduction can be found in our Vlog 7 from Uji. There is a longer introduction at the start of the video. Once again thank you very much for watching and the feedback. I am still learning and there is a lot of things which still need to be improved. I am also sorry for a late answer! There has been a bit of a break in posting new videos on CZcams. I have been busy with work, but I am still constantly working on my next vlogs, one of which I am planning to publish this week. I wish you all the best! Take care and stay safe!

      Thank you for watching my video and your comment! I highly appreciate your feedback. I assume that you are referring to the problem with too long music sections. I have been pointed out before that those are too long and not good enough with which I completely agree and I see it as one of the biggest problems. In the future vlogs I going to make them shorter a bit and also going to concentrate a lot on how to improve them and make them more interesting. Shorter videos right to the point are definitely more popular, but I am thinking about finding the way how I could show the whole trip in the interesting way. My videos are going to be a big longer ones. So I would like to find a way how could I improve those getting from place A to B scenes without removing them completely. For examples in the video I am editing right now I am trying to create a lot of variation in style of those sequences. Once again thank you for watching and the comment! I highly appreciate it!

      Thank you very much for watching and the comment! I highly appreciate it! I completely agree that the first part of the video, the going to location scene, is one of the biggest problems although the lack of efficiency can be seen in the middle parts too. This is one of the areas I am trying to improve and putting more effort in my next vlogs. I included the train part because my goal is to show the whole trip from start to the end. I would like to keep this goal but I am looking for a better way to show the whole. In my next vlog, which I am editing right now I think I have improved it significantly although it is still long. The whole video is still 39min but there will be more things happening, a lot of changes, and especially train part I tried to make very visual and put a story into it. The problem which you pointed out is my biggest concerns but instead of cutting it off and doing more like everyone does I am looking for a way to make it worth watching. I might fail but I would like to try it first. For example I think Hong Kong part 1 is better already although not good enough even close. Actually the next vlog I am editing right now is Yoshino during cherry blossom and related to the Koyasan. Once again, thank you very much for your attention! If you might give me a second chance and check out Yoshino when it is done, I would very much like to hear your opinion if I was able to improve this problem. It will still take me 2-4 weeks to finish that video.
